I want that new helmet, but someone told me you have to have the spinal back back to get it. I have the first version of the spinal back pack but can’t upgrade it due to a shortage of gold (I have all the materials), can i still get the helmet even with the weakest back pack?

All you need is the blue quality (fine?) spinal backpiece. You do not need anything more than that. Go and have fun!

With blue he means quality, not the Dynamic one, which means that yours is enough to skip the watchknights.

Isn’t that the blue piece? The one you craft with 50 Irons?
You mean the first version you make? I hope so, like I said, I have the materials to make ascended, just not the gold xD

Thank you guys for clearing that for me, when I heard “blue spinal” I thought of ascended colored spinal blades.

You will need the exotic or better for the achievement iirc.

She, and yes, I meant blue in quality. I apologize for the confusion. (tho it’d be weird for anet to only allow ONE of the colored backpieces in)
You don’t need the spinal blades at all to get the new helmet and anyone that tells you otherwise doesn’t understand. The only thing you ‘need’ spinal blades for is the achievement for equipping exotic blades. They are not ‘needed’ for any other purpose at all.
The helmet is a rewarded for ascending to the Breachmaker and finishing the story. This is done by defeating all 3 watchknights in LA (on the hour) and then entering the portal to the airship. This portal requires you to have walked through the red, green and blue circles to get the attunement, and does not require having spinal blades. Once on the Breachmaker you then defeat another boss and in doing so get access to the final story instance where the title and helm get awarded. This also doesn’t require spinal blades.
OR
You can equip spinal blades and use the portal near the old diving board to skip the entire boss encounter and go right to the end. This ‘does’ require the spinal blades, but doesn’t award anything extra, just lets you finish the content on ‘easy mode’.

Any backpack will do to allow you to go into the instance bypassing the big fight, even if you only have it in your inventory, but needs to be soulbound.
The main confusion comes from the “Build your own backbone” achievement, which you get by equipping the exotic or higher version, but it’s unrelated to the actual teleport.

You don’t need the backpiece, no, but it’s a lot easier to get the helm this way then wait 30-60 minutes to get to Scarlet, and if you don’t want to take the time, why not? It’s not hard to make the fine quality backpiece. Also, it’s kind of necessary for the “nowhere to hide” achievement, unless you get super crazy lucky on your second attempt or like waiting.

Ah, that clears things up. I don’t know of too many people who would actually equip a single bladed pack, so that never crossed by mind.

Yeah…and it’s totally not a slap in the face that whatever other ascended item you had, which was just as hard or even harder to make, didn’t get you an achievement.
It seems like a pointless filler to me, or otherwise a very poor way to promote an underwhelmingly ugly item.
