GW1-era LA is gone forever

And yet… life goes on…

the moment they removed the GW1 LA fountain is the moment they removed the last part of GW1, GW2 is now officially unrelated to GW1.
So… the Norn, Asura, Humans, Charr, every single location in the game, even some of the enemies, that are the exact same as they were in GW1, dont relate the two games?
People forget that there’s been something like 2-3 centuries that pass between the timepoints the games take place in. The GW2 LA was already nearly unrelated to the GW1 LA when it was drowned by the raising of Orr.
Also, HoM. Just sayin.
Actually the fountain is still there. That was one of the first things I checked when I saw the patch had arrived. It’s just to the east of the giant hole where the drill was/is, tilted sideways but still in-tact.
There’s more of the old city surviving than I suspected at first, it’s just under the drill pieces, which will hopefully be removed in future updates.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”

firstly, EotN was added in response of GW2, no GW2 and you would’ve never seen the 3 other races.
also, what places?
there is not even a hint of ascalon, droknar, hedge of denravi, temple of the ages (and no, the swamp isn’t ToA, the statues are not even the same and they are not on the same location) so unless you have even a shred of evidence they are still there, i take it with a grain of salt.
oh and the 250 years is a poor excuse, there are buildings of about 5000 years ago that still stand today IRL yet in GW2 nothing is left, a game only 250 years later.

To say nothing of Ascalon City and Droknar’s Forge still being in the game. Along with Piken Square, Yak’s Bend..
Try going out to explore sometime, you might be surprised!
Temple of Ages is in the bottom of Godslost swamp.

This isn’t even tying into the characters, where we have such places as:

Farrah Cappo, Armsman Pitney, and Ivor Trueshot’s ghosts in the crypt from the Charr tutorial – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Battle_in_the_Vault
Now if you were expecting many of those buildings to be perfectly in tact after the rising of Orr, when some huge tidal waves would have summarily destroyed Droknar’s Forge and The Granite Citadel, or if you were expecting the Henge of Denravi to be in tact (when it was already falling into disrepair in the first game) when it was nothing more than a hiding place for the Shining Blade, then yeah you’ve got some unrealistic expectations.
And yes, Godlost Swamp is Temple of the Age’s ruins.
There’s plenty of things tying the first game to this one, but if all you clung to were some underwater statues in the middle of a city then you obviously didn’t care very much to begin with.
The old fountain still exists, near the drill hole.
I guess this doesn’t count either.
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen

It’s the same world. Is all one story. The lore is one. Different titles may change game mechanics, but ignore the past, and it’s no longer a successor, but an impostor. Sharing the name to lure the players…
You could say that there’s games like Final Fantasy with completely independent stories… but those are not sold as continuations, but as new installments. This, in the other hand, claims to be set 250 years in the future of the same world.
Seems like the living story writers love nothing more than stamping on the remains of old Guild Wars lore. I wish history and lore from GW1 were celebrated more rather than retconed and removed from the game.

He hasn’t responded, so maybe he swallowed his pride and admitted he was wrong. Or maybe he ignored the post. Either way, it’s there for the other people who would also claim that “Oh, GW2 has no ties whatsoever to the first game.” He was just the mouthpiece I used to get all this info.
And that’s just off of memory anyways. I’m sure there’s more that I can’t remember.
There are bits and pieces of the old staircases left. I haven’t quite given up hope for more releases that go back to the roots of the best of GW1 but who knows at this point.

Fort Koga for one. The Maguuma PVP map. It’s in Brisbane. In brisbane is also several named ghosts referring to GW1 events/people.
The tombstones in Granite Citadel are reference to GW1 henchmen/NPCS.
In Rurikton there are four npcs descended from GW1 Ascalon henchmen. Anton is in Gendarren Fields. Lots, and lots of Gw1 references. Even the broken statue of Dwayna in Lornar’s pass is where a statue of dwayna was in GW1.

Nope. The grenth statue is the temple of grenth ruins.
Skylady’s memory is what I talk about. It’s a statue of Dwayna.
Even the broken statue of Dwayna in Lornar’s pass is where a statue of dwayna was in GW1.

Both. There’s an old Dwayna statue out there and the infamous alt UW portal Grenth statue out there.
You might have seen the Dwayna statue during the marionette event. It was around one of the lanes.
People who are saying there are no GW1 throwbacks in GW2 are full of it. They’re everywhere.
I suspect these people aren’t exactly the GW1 fans they make themselves out to be.
They just use GW1 as a platform to whine about various things that may (rarely) or may not (often) be of concern in GW2.
Since the topic isn’t entirely off track, refer to a previous thread… https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/lore/lore/Tyria-Past-and-Present/first#post3561836
with an extra effort to check out someone elses previous cool link of some great pics..

People who are saying there are no GW1 throwbacks in GW2 are full of it. They’re everywhere.
It’s not the throwbacks that get to me but all the unsolved mysteries and half finished storylines.
Imagine if they suddenly dropped this jungle dragon storyline, after all this foreshadowing, and went off to do something random and unrelated for another 5 years.
The life of a GW fan…
Humm went to see LA and people are already there but I would like to see LA return or a new LA to be made
This game isn’t the continuation of the first, it just stole the title and lore.
I mostly just created this thread as an observation, but I’ll step in here since my point seems to have been misunderstood. I know there are tons of GW1 references in this game, but the problem I have with this most recent update is that two of the few remaining traces of what was the central city in GW1 are now gone. The lighthouse has been obliterated, and the fountain, even if it’s still there (I haven’t personally seen it yet) is in a location that’s nowhere near as prominent as before. That fountain used to be THE symbol of old LA, and it was a gathering place for pretty much everyone, and now it’s been shoved aside. I can’t help but feel that this is symbolic: the way I see it, Anet wants to cut all of its ties with GW1 so they can shove their vision of GW2 on us, and doesn’t want to be burdened by old lore. Destroying some of the few remaining symbols of GW1 LA seems to validate that belief. LA will be rebuilt, as it was after the rising of Zhaitan, but I have this nagging doubt that the city’s origins will be forgotten and conveniently swept under the rug to make room for whatever Anet decides to come up with next. In my mind, it would be the equivalent of some foreign power taking over Washington, D.C. and creating some splendid new capital over the ruins of the American city, deliberately ignoring all the history that had transpired there in the past and covering it up with cheap populist propaganda meant to placate the masses.

Then why have they mostly created new lore out of whole cloth, with minimal ties to GW1 lore? Why have they failed to get into some of the truly excellent unresolved questions and plotlines from 250 years ago? They’re sitting on a gold mine of unused and unexplored ideas for content, yet they insist on ignoring it for the most part. Please explain to me how this failure to cash in on everything they set up in the first game is anything but ignoring the GW1 lore. Yes, the core game has shout-outs and references, but the Living Story has absolutely minimal ties to GW1. The only thing I can think of is the reference to the Zephyrites taking care of Glint’s remains, but that’s about it. Indeed, the alliances were highly, highly implausible under the established lore of the core game of GW2 itself. That’s just bad writing that shows that the writers are making up whatever they feel like without regard to the core game or to GW1.

Scarlet’s Marionette could be seen on a tapestry on the wall of the Eye of the North in the original Guild Wars. Is that not a good enough tie for you?

That was mere concept art from Utopia that they just now happened to use in a way that has absolutely nothing to do with GW1. I’m talking lore here, and that’s not lore.

Because all that stuff is 250 years old.
Things don’t usually stay incredibly relevant for over 2 centuries. It’s time for new stories with inklings of the past thrown in. I don’t want to have all of GW1’s plots come front and center unless it is actually relevant and server a purpose beyond fan service.
If they bring back the Mursaat, I want there to be a reason.
If they decide Abaddon DIDN’T die, then I want there to be a reason.
If the Dwarves suddenly make their triumphant return from the Depths of Tyria, I want there to be a reason.
What I don’t want is for these things to happen and have them just be pandering to a fan base that played their first game. That’s why we had the first games in the first place: to tell those stories. Those unresolved questions – like the Mursaat and the fate of Cantha and Palawa Joko in Elona – might get resolved in the future, but as it stands right now, there’s no reason to bring two hundred year old stories back to the lime light unless they mesh with the newer stories being told.
Because all that stuff is 250 years old.

The Vatican, the The Western Wall, the Statue of Liberty, the Kremlin, my list could go on but you get the point. You drop a marionette on any of those locations and destroy them completely and you are going to upset an awful lot of people.
Simply put your argument does not stand.

You must live in the US. In Europe, there are a lot of relevant buildings that are over 250 years old.

Abaddon died. Anet said it outright he’s gone forever.
But, there is a point. Some of that stuff listed (RL) has survived all these years… because it’s been maintained, most of the GW1 stuff hasn’t or got hit by natural disasters.
Ruins hundreds of years old are nothing compared to their “Brand new” splendor and awesome.
I LOVED GW1, the lore and all. I love GW2 lore and all. I LOVE seeing things in GW2 that remind me instantly of events or places in GW1, they are all over. But I understand the passage of TIME. Some things fade. Some things get destroyed (Dredge are noted to at times purposefully target and destroy dwarven structures, relics, and other artifacts). Other things get buried (Statue of Dwayna, temple of ages, old LA).
Temple of Ages was basically ruins 250 years+ ago. In the middle of a swamp. It’s not SHOCKING for it to have basically been ‘consumed’ by the swamp.
I fail to see all these horrid retcons and GW2 cutting all ties to GW1. I may not know EVERY tiny bit of the kitten lore, but I know plenty of it. If they can keep things to basically being in the same kitten spot as they were in GW1, even same facing (Fort Koga, temple of grenth, etc)… what are the horrid changes? Magic system? 250 years. kitten changes. Magic by nature across almost all settings isn’t a constant “never changing” force. Hell, I find Anet often goes back and ties thing into a greater plot. IE, the nightmare dragon in the Sylvari intro may be referenced as a foreshadowing of Mordi’s power. (Maybe not planned, but it could turn into that). Zhizier and Shiro were turned into Abaddon’s agents (by being tricked into doing what he wanted) to explain why they did some things or why things happened.
I LOVE references to GW1. but it’s been 250 kitten years, possibly more depending on campaign (or less). A mystery back then is going to be a faint rumor now. A hero of that age will be a legend in a book now. (depending on hero and culture, Norn keep legendary heroes around in tale far longer then other races). historians get different views of events (Charr are perfect example, the stormcaller horn. Their version is far more bashing and there is a Charr historian there or in the ruins SPECIFICALLY trying to find evidence or facts to show a more accurate version of the battle), tales become twisted. Like Mega says, if something from Gw1 is shoved front a center, I want it to have a REASON, not simply to appease us Gw1 fans.
If Livia or Scepter of Orr appears, there better be a good reason for it.
Great move, although don’t you dare touch the Eye of the North or the Crystal Desert in such a way >.>

Only thing I was saying is that I like how they’re not attaching themselves to GW1 and actually destroying a central hub, which you don’t see in many games. Why should a villain attack a refuge camp on a desert when he can go and destroy the main city?
I never said that I wanted to see LA destroyed.

Finally, time to actually move on with GW2 lore instead of trying to make it an enhanced version of GW1.
Great move, although don’t you dare touch the Eye of the North or the Crystal Desert in such a way >.>
So when the Eye of the North becomes a pile of rubble after a dragon minion attack and the crystal desert’s oasis and sands become a boring and depressing purple tar pit, remember us telling you “I told you so”.
Yeah given how frequently they release this kind of things I believe the son of Scarlet will fill the oasis with Centaur-Leviathan hybrids in 2028. I’ll save a link for this thread by then (and if it happens sooner, I’ll expect that “told you so”).

Anet wants to cut all of its ties with GW1.
Except they don’t.
I want for there to be valid story reasons for bringing these things in too. Pandering to a fanbase just to gain favor with them should be avoided. But what I’m asking is why Anet hasn’t even touched its existing lore, and instead has pulled 95% of the Living Story out of thin air.
Imagine writing a bestselling novel. Then you write a sequel that builds upon the original and has shout-outs to the events and characters of the first book. Then you come up with a direct sequel to the second book, but instead of using the old story and characters, you create entirely new characters, ignore or clumsily retcon the story of the first two books, and ultimately come up with a plot that is barely connected to the first two books at all.
Example:
Book 1 is set in late medieval Europe, and the main character, A, is a knight. An invading army is threatening his country (Country), so he works with B, C, and D against the evil machinations of X. A wins, but B dies.
Book 2 is set in early renaissance Europe, and the main character, G, is a nobleman the son of A. He is joined by H and I, the descendants of B and C, as well as D (who is really old at this point) in a quest to discover who’s trying to overthrow the government of Country. There are shout-outs to the past events from Book 1, but the plot is different enough to be interesting while retaining the popular aspects of Book 1 that got the series going.
Book 3 takes place right after Book 2, but G steps down from his noble title and becomes a police officer, the supporting cast in this book is 100% new and unrelated to the previous characters, H, and D are completely absent, and only I is present in a one-paragraph cameo. The plot this time involves G hunting down tax evaders (which is nothing compared to the epic scope of the first books). Plot elements from Book 2 are outright ignored, or otherwise characters’ statements directly contradict what was clearly established in the previous works. The only similarity between Book 2 and Book 3 is that they take place in the same country and feature the same protagonist, G. Other than that, Book 3 has no plot connections to Book 2.

Oh and people can save their precious LA but I can’t for some of my areas?
Nope, you are the one that has said they do not care about what others like and have no interest in if gets destroyed, no one has stated the reverse for you.
Personally I (And likely most other GW1 vets) want all the remaining GW1 areas to stay intact, including what is left of the Crystal Desert etc.
I wouldn’t have minded GW1 slowly disappearing from the game if GW2 has been better, but in just about every way except graphics GW2 is inferior to GW1. They removed just about everything interesting from GW1 and turned it into a minigame.
I think that is why you still see players referencing GW1 two years after this game’s release. GW2 is pretty much only good enough to play for the few days surrounding each new event and then it slips back into obscurity.
