That would be so cool if anet could do something like that. I’m not sure if there is any legal stuff that might stop them (laws are weird…) but maybe they could put a donation item in the gem shop and get a Taimi and/or Scruffy for it.

This is true. World of Warcraft did something like this for the make a wish foundation and gave a kid with terminal cancer a very rare mount. All they had to do was push a button and give it to him. It made the kid happy.

What sickened me is the toxic WoW community then complained saying we worked hard getting that mount and they just gave it away to someone. Grrrr fk that community grinds my gears – happy that I’ve left that horrible place.

Anet would get amazing press from this. I can’t see anyone complaining about it either.

I’d like to see the charity idea. But I see nothing at all wrong with giving her an exclusive mini, even if i would like one too… So either would be really awesome. It would be nice if one of my weekly gem purchases would go to charity.

i find Christina’s story to be very touching, but giving exlusive rewards to a single player would be a bad move imho.

Perhaps an exclusive mini available to all those who make a donation for MS through the ingame store?

Giving Christina a unique mini without giving anyone anything else, absolutely not. Putting a mini in the store that everyone can buy with all proceeds going to MS or some other charity, absolutely.

Yes to the mini with proceeds to a charity. Absolutely not to an exclusive item to a player that no one else can get. I have nothing against this Christina, whoever she is, but discrimination of any sort is wrong, even if the discrimination is in favor of someone less fortunate. I doubt Christina wants special treatment. I’m willing to bet that she’d prefer to be treated equally like everyone else.

This. People with a disability, a genetic condition, or even people that are temporarily in a wheelchair because of an accident, usually just want one thing: to be treated normally, like everyone else.

I feel you, you read something that moved you, and you want to do something. Well, you can. Next time when you’re in a crowded subway, train or tram, take your eyes off your phone and check if others need your seat more than you do. That’s a huge leap forward in thinking. And actually seeing the world around you.

I like fadeaway’s proposal to introduce a mini Taimi, the proceeds of which are used for MS research. That’s entirely at the discretion of Anet though.

Putting the mini in the gem store might be a challenge, though. Seeing as people could buy gems with gold, and just plain buy gems, it would be hard for anet to keep track of where the donations are coming from. Then again I don’t know anything about computer magic, for all I know they could put it in the gem store and demand you pay with your card before buying it.

i think they should link the hero panel to a non-black lion donation interface.. any donation more than a dollar awards achievement points.. doing this for other in game items just overcomplicates things.. they could choose 12 different charities and have a “charity of the month” much like they have a new achievements panel every so often.. hell, i’d pay a dollar to “whatever” charity each month for little or no reward if the interface was user friendly enough..
so, imagine 1 lousy dollar from almost every player going to MS in march..
and another dollar from almost every player going to breast cancer, or cancer in general, in april.. along with self chosen non-achievement related donations throughout the year

Actually, I’ve been playing this game since beta. They did, but those were “Buy x ammount of gems and get x prize” rewards. Making the mini, should it come into existence be akin to a mini Mr. Sparkles wouldn’t work. I could buy x amount of gems and get the mini as a bonus, but there’s no way to keep track of whether or not I’m buying the gems for the mini, or buying them for another reason. This is exactly why it would cause confusion, because the money, in this scenario, is meant to be donated.

Let’s say it worked like the Mini Mr. Sparkles. You buy 4,000 gems, you get the mini, and ontop of that the proceeds are donated. Now, if both you and I buy 4,000 gems, who’s to say both of us did it to donate? Maybe I just wanted four Thresher Sickles. If the Taimi mini was put in as a donation pet, it couldn’t be given as a prize for buying x amount of gems, (because at this point arenanet is at risk of losing money meant to go to them) or be put in the gem store like normal minis, because of the gold-to-gems currency (resulting in some players getting the mini without donating at all).

Charity drives in other games generally worked in a way so that you directly donated x amount, and got x prize. What I meant by my original post is that if they put it in the gem store, it would be hard to keep track of who’s actually donating, especially with our gold-to-gems currency exchange. They would have to set it up in such a way so that it worked differently, or separately from how the Black Lion Store is generally run. Perhaps something similar to your idea with it being separate and in the hero panel?

Unfortunately people don’t generally do things 100% out of the kindness of their hearts. I’m sorry, it sucks, but it’s true, there’s a reason why charities give out feel-good prizes like mugs, T-shirts, calendars, ect. That’s not to say that everyone is like that, I’m sure many people would donate without the prospect of a prize, but certainly not as many of those who would for a mini. Giving away achievement points for donations might not raise as many funds, or awareness, as an exclusive mini pet.

Though people have good intentions and Christinas story is compelling and is an inspiring post. I have to say I am against handing out unique items to any players as suggested by trunks.

Their are hundreds of thousands of people playing Guild Wars and many of them have life altering disabilities, it would be extremely unfair to hand out one pet to a single player an ignore the many, many others who may be in similar situations.

I get that people want to do something nice, but this perhaps is not the right course of action.

How about this put the Taimi mini on the tp as a single buy Item IE: 1 per account and Anet donates X amount of dollars in the name of the Heros of Tyria to the Ms foundation for each mini sold. Good PR on ANETs part and from time to time they could do similar things for other orginizations

After watching the dev speak about Taimi and thinking about the whole group around the living story (Kasmeer, Marjory, Braham, Rox, Taimi and – maybe – Scarlet), I’m pretty sure there will be a set of minis from all of them, sooner or later, like from the Destiny’s Edge party.

I don’t know how I overlooked this. Thankfully, I saw it quoted many times after. This would certainly be a great idea. It’s easy enough to program, gets people into the gemstore, gives a fair chunk of the profit to charity [because I doubt ANet would give 100% away] and overall gives ANet publicity and a good reputation.

Gwen wasn’t much better, she was a mesmer and that was the extent of her usefulness.

On topic, I think a fundraiser would be great – such as how they had breast cancer awareness sales in GW1. It could just be incidental that a mini Taimi is related to MS research. Would be nice to see some miniatures of all of the newer additions anyway: Braham, Rox, Taimi…but it’s completely unrelated to Christina’s situation.

However, on the subject of giving somebody like Christina a free mini, that’s a no. That’s kind of part of that whole “equality” thing, you get treated as equally kittenty as everyone else. Lowest common denominator is the name of that game. Not only would they also have to verify her story but then they’d have to justify why they selected her, or any select group of people, for such treatment. There are so many other aspects…why not give every orphan a free Kasmeer mini?

While I was definitely touched by Christina’s thread, I think that giving her a special mini would set a bad trend. What about all the MS sufferers that might be playing the game that don’t make a post like this? Or what about cancer patients or someone dying of Leukemia?

I know that’s a bit hyperbolish, but I just wanted to bring that up.

I like the story she gave and she is commendable.

But from a gameplay and fairness standpoint, it’s ill-advised to hand out special rewards to unique individuals based on a disability, as that creates ill-advised drama.

e.g.
-Why only X disability and why not Y disability?
-I have disability Z, can I have a mini too?
-I have disability Z (when I really don’t), can I have one too?

I agree that Anet could at least sell a special Taimi mini with a portion of the proceeds going to charity. That is the best of both worlds.
