I expect only a few questions to be answered in that patch. Not nearly enough to sate what’s needed. Especially considering its also coupled with alot of other changes to boot. I hardly expect them to go too deeply into what was really supposed to be the end here.

It’s like reading a book, and complaining before you finish the last couple of chapters. Have patience my friend. If the final part of the LS doesn’t satisfy you in two weeks, then complain.

Just a quick note, next week is a “maintenance” patch not a the “feature and balance” patch people have been anticipating. There has been no firm date set for the later other than “after the conclusion of LS season1.”

FWIW, my assumption would be April for “feature and balance” given that next week is maintenance and epilogue, and April 1st falls on the following Tuesday which means we will likely see the return of the SAB on its first anniversary.

You ask great questions. I personally lost interest in the “storyline” pretty quick. Too much was left to being at the right moment at the right time to hear a random and obscure conversation. It certainly wasn’t interesting enough for me to go ‘wiki’ it or anything.

The one question you asked however literally boggles my mind …

-Why did our ‘Heroes’ dismiss any opportunity to learn ANYTHING when presented with it? Especially when it mattered most.

Honestly, their response at that moment … made, no, sense, at all. They have the gall to call themselves Detectives, yet couldn’t care less as to her reasons when offered?!

And like any TV show they’re not going to give you all the answers and wrap up all the storylines at the end of Season 1, because they want you to keep watching (playing) Season 2 to find out what happens.

Your post referenced the epilogue which wasn’t mentioned that there would be one until a few days ago. My original post would have been different had you not mentioned that.

For the majority of films, books, movies, etc; the majority of questions are not answered up until the end whether this be at the climax of the story or at an epilogue. A lot of questions tend to be left unanswered until that point to keep the mystery and the viewer engrossed in the story.

My “wait for it” point was about how we’ve been told we just have to keep waiting to get the answers. And now we have to wait s’more. Why can’t they just ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS for once?

Most of those questions can be answered with a simple "because she promised them the world. While others wont be answered until the new patch in two weeks, like Caithes involvement. But the things that can be answered are that she wanted to disturb the ley line so she could wake up the jungle dragon. Like in GW1 when the asurans awoke the great destroyer with their work and because the heros (us) killed the destroyer it awoke Primordus. But he didnt raise Mordremoth like he did the other dragons, so the jungle dragon corrupted a sylvari (probably because of the whole jungle plant thing) and possible other sylvari as well (the nightmare court) to give it the idea and the information it would need to help the dragon rise from its watery depths (Magus Falls). The Inquest had already been studying dragons, Scarlet just helped them out. The reasoning for everything else was just for character and story development, to set the stage for the next dragon. Re-using the same characters we are use to would’ve been boring case we know all about them, now we get a new set of characters with a new dragon.

We got the answer of what Scarlet was after the whole time. Sure everyone wanted more answers but we got some and who says we won’t learn more in the future. There would be complaints if there was just one giant info dump at the end too

The reason they don’t answer the questions is because they don’t have to. Why waste time on coming up with complicated explanations and things that make sense when you can just say, “we’ll have answers for you next patch”, and just never deliver them.

I mean look at how the masses just gobble that up. Even now when nothing was answered after an entire YEAR of story people are saying “obviously it will all be answered in the epilogue”… I mean the epilogue didn’t even exist until a week ago, it was just a maintenance patch, now they have managed to hype up a maintenance patch as the magic patch that will provide answers… and people fall for it.

Seems to me you trapped yourself in all those community made theories that were never relevant in-game. Most of the things were answered if you pay attention, and the other part was not, because the story is not yet done.

I wouldn’t mind knowing which things were answered. Would be rather nice. So far all I’ve gotten was vague speculations as to what they might or might not be. Neither denied such answers are true or not.

Alot of the other questions I have likely won’t be popping up to get answered simply because the only one who knew the rhyme or reason to them was Scarlet.

But If you do, there is Lore there, there is story lines, and the more you learn, the more you want to know, and the more interesting it becomes.

But yes, you do have to put effort in, its not all handed on a plate.

When I first started playing, I didn’t care about the lore or story, but now, since I’ve learned more about it, the entire game is a lot more interesting because of it. Its part of exploring!

And what I thought was dis-jointed story lines actually all makes sense now.

But often in real life ‘The villain’ ‘Murder’ ‘Fraud’ etc is not listened to, and people don’t take his explanations seriously either. Everyone is already convinced of their guilt.

And the story is coming. I for one, do like epic Stories. Some of my favorite novels are the Dark Tower series by Stephen King.

As long as there is a backstory, and details, and character building and world building, I don’t WANT the ending at the beginning. That is why the ending is where it is.

Though I don’t see how Lore fits into that argument since alot of things regarding scarlet are Lore breaking. And, if they were already present in the game visibly, why would I be asking these questions? Cuz if they are there, SHOW ME, please?

Because otherwise, there is nothing and I doubt there will be more to support the questions. This is the end and we only learned the obvious.

I too am reading the Dark Tower and love the novels. But if there’s anything that would make me upset would be if Roland found the Dark Tower had no significance. Just a big ole cop out with no answers. That’s what I’ve felt has gone on at this time.

Anet even stated things will be answered in the epilogue. meaning for now we’ve killed her and had it confirmed she was nothing but a puppet for something else (95% sure its a dragon).

No, I expected them to answer questions as we go along, so that there wasn’t a long list. However, those hopes were dashed long ago, so now I go leaping from update to update, hoping that each update will be the one that answers my questions.

Lots of good questions. Here’s some of my thoughts on it.

I assume the Nightmare Court helped Scarlet because she’s a Silvari and they probably saw her viewing into the Eternal Alchemy as looking into the Dream. She also turned her back on the Pale Tree and that’s what they want, Silvari who do that. She’s probably joined them in order to manipulate them into working for her.

The other races accepted her because she was Ceara back then. They were probably impressed with her exploits and wanted to recruit her. If she could master something so quickly, they wanted to see what she could bring to the table; what she could do to push their progress forward.

The voices in her head are related to the thing you see at the end of the final battle with Scarlet The Dragon.

Omadd was an Asura who was fixated on his research and would do anything to push it forward and saw Ceara as the key.

Queen Jennah probably worked on that army for a long time in secret.

Based on Taimi’s sudden change of heart after she sees the suffering of lion’s arch citizens, no she wasn’t.

Why do the nightmare court do anything? Because they are children given a chainsaw and told to see how much suffering they can cause.

Bribery, Blackmail, Charisma?
Every faction had something scarlet could provide, technology to reclaim their fallen positions, she created a false prophet for the krait, the nightmare court just enjoy stabbing things.

-Where did she get all the resources to pull off all these elaborate plans?
Simple, she had a faction of Charr and Dredge. The first faction she pulled in, in the living story. These are groups both very efficient at industry and mining and aren’t to shy on slave labor either.

-Why did Omadd help her and inevitably break her mind?
Because they were at college in Rata Sum together and he didn’t know the consciences of a Sylvari exploring their own mind unrestricted. Also, he’s an Asura…

-If Scarlet had been successful, what would she have done then? What about the voices?
Scarlet is successful, she built the drill to continue regardless of her condition. Meaning this was her end game plan, she intended to probably die here. This is even more obvious since shes been so proficient at running away in the past.

-How was she able to ‘bully’ the Aetherblades into fighting for her?
Hey pirates, if i build you some sweet airships will you work for me?

-Why the pointless invasions?
To distract you from the probes being built.

-Who was Mister E?
Unknown, likely wasn’t meant to be revealed yet if ever.

-Why so little involvement from the Orders and other factions?
Most of them are in Orr for the majority of the story. Probably spent most of the time under estimating scarlet since it seemed that most of her plans failed. A villain that never succeeds is not often worth the time or resources.

-Why a multiracial Inquest faction? How did this help the composition?
Lost me here… But since inquest only care for results I doubt they care if you are asura or a moose as long as you deliver.

-How did Queen Jennah amass such an army of Watchnights?
Haven’t a clue, wasn’t here for the jubilee.

-What were the details regarding Zojja and Taimi given the relationship?
Zojja seems to be Taimi’s ward.

-What did the Inquest know about the ley lines prior to Thermanova? How did they discover it? Why did they discover it?
Since Taimi speaks of them like it is fairly common knowledge they exist, I don’t see why this is an issue.

-What was the point of the Marionette in the grand scheme of things?
Probably beta test the deathlazer and the knights, also another distraction for the uncoming invasion of LA. She might have needed the energy gathered inside her clockwork units to fuel the drill.

-Why did Scarlet free Mai?
Someone had to lead the aetherblades, freeing her gives her a reason to side with scarlet.

-What did the EOTM have to do with Scarlet and her plans with Mai?
Haven’t a clue… More distractions perhaps.

This patch is supposed to be the finale of season 1. Not the patch after that.

OP, I found some of the questions you posed to be answered. However, like any tv series, there are far more questions than answers. Generally speaking, the first ‘season’ never gives you all the answers, but do tend to set up lots and lots of questions. It leaves them room for things to do in future seasons. A lot of shows tend to make their season finales into 2 part cliff hangers (part 1 the season finale, part two the first episode of the next season) to make you ‘eager’ to find out what happens. I find the LS does much the same thing – opens up a lot of questions, gives you a few answers to the initial season, throws a cliffhanger at you, and then leaves the rest floating in a ‘to be continued’ fashion.

Will we find all of the answers out eventually? Maybe, maybe not. Sometimes even at the very end of a long running series (Stargate for example) they don’t or can’t necessary close out all the open questions. The best we can do is compile the knowledge we have and use our imaginations…

Well, we waited from patch to patch to patch not getting to know anything important until we got answers spoonfed by some NPCs which were mostly pretty unspectacular or kinda farfetched. Half a year of guessing who is behind and another half why she is doing that. And now we could have got an answer about Scarlets motivation, if we didn’t have a low IQ 3meter man in our group.

For me it’s like an endless boring TV-series and honestly I lost my interest in this story entirely and only want it to end.

I’ll try to answer some of the questions with what we have learned from the story. Some people have already posted fine answers to some of the questions, so I’m simply following up on what they began and further elaborate on some of them.

When entering Scarlet’s Lair during the Origins of Madness, we saw one of the poisonous plants used by Canach to stir the wildlife during the Southsun story. The plant was near the antidote which we helped create to combat the Nightmare toxin during Tower of Nightmares, and this implies that Scarlet combined the toxins of Canach’s plant with our antidote to create the miasma with which she later attacked Lion’s Arch. There are even some npcs dialogues littered here and there in these recent patches which further discuss the nature of the miasma and how it differs from the Nightmare toxin from the Kessex adventure.

This is further confirmed by what Canach says about Scarlet if you go talk to him in his cage in Vigil Keep where he states that Scarlet wants to rule the world from a throne of rubble, basically (which appears not to be in the wiki yet). We also learn a bit from Scarlet’s motivations from the short story What Scarlet Saw where her plans are elaborated on:

Scarlet’s voice rose as she went on. “I have a great deal of work ahead of me. I don’t know what the world will be when I’m through, but I will very much enjoy finding out. Empires will fall, continents will burn, and when the conflagration is over, I’ll be there to put my stamp on whatever new world this one becomes.”

Although this had been her goal, things likely would’ve changed after her master's awakening, as the dragon's modus operandi--destroy/corrupt stuff and feed on magic--differs from Scarlet's, who ended up being a mere pawn in its scheme to help it wake up.

We learn during Twilight Arbor Aetherblade path that the Aetherblades are worried that she’ll kill them if they fail. This was also mentioned in the short story “Twilight Preparations” where we witness discussion from the NPCs we end up fighting as bosses during that path. Scarlet herself states during her invasions that “Have you met my Aetherblades? They work for me, you know, because they like living!”

It’s likely the Aetherblades also work for her for the loot like any pirate would. Sacking Lion’s Arch has to be a pretty profitable endeavour, after all.

There could even be another reason for their co-operation, although this is mere speculation on the double meaning of the wording of “because they like living”, so take it with a grain of salt. So, depending on whether they knew about Scarlet and her “master”, they and other factions might work for her because if they oppose her, they’ll face her master’s wrath…so literally, they want to live through the cataclysm which her master will bring, hence the co-operation despite all the abuse from Scarlet as they know the alternative will be far worse. This idea is potentially implied if you chatted with the Molten Alliance prisoners in the cells of Black Citadel during the Flame and Frost storyline (although admittedly that dialogue can be looked at from different ways, but it’s fun to speculate). Here’s the bit of relevant dialogue from the Flame Legion prisoner:

Just curious. What did you hope to accomplish?
“You could never understand because you and your people are destined to die in our fires. Your time is coming. You should prepare yourselves.”
What are you talking about?
“Nothing. Nevermind. Go fight your dragons. If you don’t, they’ll annihilate you.”
They’ll annihilate you too.
“I doubt it. We’ll be here long after the dragons have swallowed you and yours.”

What was the point of the Marionette in the grand scheme of things?

Rox said this after a successful marionette run:

“She [Scarlet] doesn’t fight like she wants to win. She sacrifices her weapons to take some of us out. It’s like she’s culling the herd.”

This is further supported by the fact that if you fail the event, the marionette still explodes…so it was merely meant to distract us and take as many of us with it as possible while Scarlet prepared to target her true goal, LA. Although canonically (as per a developer livestream if I recall) it seems there was only one marionette battle, and it ended with us defeating it, so the other marionette battles were there simply for gameplay purposes.

I hope this clears some issues regarding these questions. Admittedly some of these could be easily missed unless you were on the right place at the right time, but thankfully the wiki has most of this stuff written down for later reading.

To be fair, Braham isn’t quite the typical “dumb muscle” kind of guy. If you listened to the idle chatter between him and Taimi. during the Edge of the Mists storyline, it became clear that Braham does understand and can in fact discuss complex concepts such as ley lines even if he doesn’t know all the proper technical terminology. This show of intelligence actually caught Taimi off guard as she didn’t expect a norn like Braham to understand technobabble, and this (coupled with Braham finding out about Taimi’s condition) is likely one of the reasons why they came to see each other in a new light and helped deepen the bond between them.

Most of the answers will probably be left in the air for the player to fill in themselves, some will be answered in next patch. Here’s the way I see them so far:

-Was Taimi connected to Scarlet deeper than her technologic fascination?
Doubt it. She’s a preteen (IIRC someone said that she was the asura equivalent of 13 years old), I think it’s mostly just idol worship and rebelling against authority by openly admiring someone that is seen as bad

-Why did the Nightmare Court aid Scarlet? There was no mention of motivation or gain compared to the others.
IIRC it was said during the nightmare tower events that it was just a faction of the nightmare court, not the court itself that was helping her. In any way, the whole motivation behind the nightmare court is to spread as much evil and suffering as they could, in the hopes that enough of it contaminates the dream of dreams in the form of nightmares, freeing future sylvari from the ventari tablet’s influence. Scarlet gave them just that.

-What was Caithe’s secret? How does Caithe Know Scarlet?
shhh.. it’s a secret..

-Why did her alliances continue to fight for her after each one was foiled miserably?
IIRC (I think it was mentioned after flame and frost, don’t remember) most of the dredge and flame legion that followed her disbanded, but there were still some that remained. I’m guessing that they let them know just enough about the ley lines (without mentioning the awakening of a dragon) to tempt them into still following her because of the great magical power she was after. The nightmare court, the previous answer still holds, the kraitt, well, I have a theory about the spores being secretly altered by Scarlet to include a bit that mind controls the kraitt to be loyal to her. After all, since the tower of nightmare was destroyed, we don’t see any regular kraitt follow her anymore, only the corrupted toxic ones.

-Did Scarlet have anything to do with Southsun?
AFAIK, don’t think so.

-How did she manage to get a Thumper in LA unnoticed?
Portalled it in in the middle of the night maybe… she does have access to very advanced portal technology.

Well, my theory about the invasions was mostly to keep their followers busy. The aetherblade, for example, are pirates following her, if you don’t keep pirates busy, and above all, getting a profit, chances are you’ll have a mutiny in your hands. We did fight aetherblade during the invasions, but there might have been more pillaging and plundering the towns and outposts in the area, for example.

-How was Scarlet so accepted by the other races so easily to master their finest methods? Not to mention this went wildly unnoticed for something so strange.
Well, about why she was accepted, she did promise them things they might wanted. Flame legion and dredge, the power to conquer their respective enemies (the other charr legions and the moletariat) by combining their technology and magic together. The giant drill with its dead laser seems to be the result of that, maybe she offer them to give it to them once she had finished using it. Nightmare court, the chance to spread evil and suffering, kraitt, the posibility of getting a new prophet. BTW, she does have lots of control over holographic technology, she might not have presented herself as she is until they had alreaddy commited to her plans.

Dredge mining for resources, aetherblade pillaging (it’s normal for pirate fleets to give a percentage of all their loot to their captain), and I still have a theory that the consortium might have been involved, even if they didn’t know it at the time.

-Why did Omadd help her and inevitably break her mind?
He wasn’t really helping her… he was experimenting with an isolation chamber he had built but needed a test subject. Since he couldn’t really record the experience (as it’s a purely psychical one), he needed someone smart enough to at least try to make some sense of the results from a scientific point of view, yet at the same time expendable. Note that one big difference between the inquest and other asura is that they’re not above using sentient beings as test subjects, but so far it does seem they prefer not to use other asura for that.

-If Scarlet had been successful, what would she have done then? What about the voices?
She talks about a new master, so I think her ultimate goal was to awake mordremoth, which was the voice guiding her. We already know from GW1 that even if the dragons are dormant, it doesn’t mean they’re inactive. Svanir was corrupted by Jormag and turned into his champion (the nornbear) almost 100 years before he awoke.

That came out longer than I expected… part 2:

-How was she able to ‘bully’ the Aetherblades into fighting for her?
I think it’s a mix of bullying and mutual interest. The first time we see the aetherblade was when they were attacking and pillaging LA and then stealing some loot during the bazaar. I’m guessing at first she recruited them with the promise of new technology that would allow them to attack on land and not only at sea (portals, airships, teleportation…) allowing them to get more and better loot. The first time we see her bullying them is during the invasions, by then Scarlet has the watchworks, 100% loyal to her alone, so probably the deal changed from “work for me and get better loot” to “keep working for me, get the good loot, or face me and my watchworks”.

-Why the pointless invasions?
She needed to keep her aetherblade busy pillaging and plundering… plus it gave her some extra funding (and most likely also to keep guards busy elsewhere while she worked)

-Who was Mister E?
It’s a mistery..

-Why so little involvement from the Orders and other factions?
The orders were very busy with the little thing in Orr. Other than that, well, the priory did kep busy researching her (marjorie is a priory member, and all the stuff in her office did show that the priory was involved in researching her for quite a while). The order of whispers was also on it, I’m guessing, and probably helped with the priory research but not directly. The vigil is more of a reactionary force, since they didn’t know where they could attack scarlet directly, it was on a defensive duty. We did see vigil representatives fighting the marionette, for example.

-Why a multiracial Inquest faction? How did this help the composition?
It was an alliance, pirates (which are multiracial) + inquest. Personally I believe that all the aetherblade we fight were pirates (there are asura pirates), with the inquest involvement being behind the curtains, with the construction of airships, weapons and other technology.

-How did Queen Jennah amass such an army of Watchnights?
We don’t know for how long she had been building there, for all we know she might have started it years ago. Also, maybe not all of scarlet’s corrupted watchworks were originally Jenna’s… she does have the technology to create new ones, we see it all the time with the menders fixing downed watchworks, and the bigger ones “giving birth” to other watchworks.

-What were the details regarding Zojja and Taimi given the relationship?
So far we know she was her mentor in the college, nothing more.

-What did the Inquest know about the ley lines prior to Thermanova? How did they discover it? Why did they discover it?
The way the fractal goes, I’m guessing they didn’t. I guess they did find an anomalous high concentration of what they called chaos energy (which Scarlet called “dragon energy”) so they built the reactor on top of it. According to what scarlet said, it was the fact that it was a ley lines intersection that caused the meltdown, but that thanks to it they found out about the ley lines in the first place.

-What was the point of the Marionette in the grand scheme of things?
From what I can see, missdirection. We all though the big weapon she was testing was the marionette and fought to destroy it while she was still testing it… but turns out the real weapon she was building and testing was the huge drilling floating ship on top of it. Once her tests were done and the intersection she was looking for was found, she just discarded the marionette (you can see the remains in Lornar’s pass).

-Why did Scarlet free Mai?

-What did the EOTM have to do with Scarlet and her plans with Mai?
It’s where the best omnomberries grow… she likes omnomberries… hey, an evil genius can also sometimes do something just to get some good omnomberries, can’t she?..

-Why did our ‘Heroes’ dismiss any opportunity to learn ANYTHING when presented with it? Especially when it mattered most.
Braham did… and he’s not exactly the kind of wanting to learn something when there’s punching involved….. BTW, it was the smart thing to do at the time… one of the goals was to shut down the drill before it reaches whatever it was drilling for, letting Scarlet monologue about her evil plans and how it would all have worked out if it wasn’t for those blasted kids and that devourer would have stalled them enough to let the drill finish drilling. Of course, it was for nothing because Scarlet had set everythig so that the drill couldn’t be stopped even with her dead, but they didn’t know about that.

BTW, Marjorie did intend to arrest Scarlet, but then was seriously injured, making Kasmeer (and yourself) to go in full kill mode..

There’s one thing I do want an answer to, though….. what was all that with cooking Lord Faren while wearing a speedo???..

Because you learn from failures. It doesn’t automatically mean defeat. If they failed so miserably then why were they marching through the streets of the centermost city in Tyria, which even Zhaitan had failed to accomplish?

Her Thumpers were initiallly even protected by inpenetrable barriers, and its heavily implied that the players assaulting them never happened, since they all “self destructed” afterwards. Keep in mind, she saw into the Eternal Alchemy. She was way beyond everyone by this point, and was likely only defeated due to being just one person (who held off entire armies for an extended period of time).

-Why all the attacks and invasion when the goal could have been accomplished much more easily discreetly?
-Why the pointless invasions?

She was broken. Despite the overarching goal, she still wanted to kill and destroy.

-How was Scarlet so accepted by the other races so easily to master their finest methods? Not to mention this went wildly unnoticed for something so strange.
-Where did she get all the resources to pull off all these elaborate plans?
-How was she able to ‘bully’ the Aetherblades into fighting for her?

She was successful.

They were busy all across Tyria. Also, they didn’t take her seriously. The few things she actually did were largely isolated incidents (e.g Twisted Marionette) that did not largely affect the surrounding area compared to something like.. oh, an Elder Dragon, or an attack on Lion’s Arch.

-How did Queen Jennah amass such an army of Watchnights?

Pact Airships are a combination of “Asura, Charr, and HUMAN” technology. Do you really think that they built airships out of the items you see laying around in all the Human farms and villages or their Middle ages-type city? Obviously they keep the big guns in storage.

Absolutely. I’d be there with you complaining if we didn’t get any conclusion.

But complaining now isn’t helpful at all because we aren’t done.

You’re right, I’m just quite sceptical on how much exposition an epilogue can offer. There are many things left unanswered, but we’ll have to wait and see.

I think we have to accept that the scope of the story is quite narrow. Anything we are directly told in the story is relevant and will have no further explanation. Anything we can infer from the portrayal of events is likely to remain unexplained, even if it seems unrealistic.

Alot of the questions asked HAVE been answered, or have enough speculation to infer. One thing thats of note is the following:

Very good reason to believe the Sylvari are tied with Mord (earth dragon). Omadds machine was designed to let people see parts of their mind unknown to them (that have been blocked by some kind of barrier), this is stated in A Study of Scarlet instance. In that same instance (and her journal) its said that when she was in her mind, something looked back. Due to recent events, this looking back was Mords corruption, deep inside her mind(and likely all sylvary untouched by the pale tree). This would also explain how she knew things about Caithe (Mord can inform her as Elder dragons know everything their minions know).
