A Compiled List of Complaints
Nice attempt to dismiss legitimate concerns, but if you’ve been paying attention you’ll notice several recurring problems that still persist to this day.
I don’t seem to see these problems. And before you say i’m fanboying anet, I do have some problems with the game in some regards, but a lot of the complaints simply don’t come off to me as extremely terrible. Some were actually positive, imo, such as Aetherblade Retreat’s difficulty. I was astonished that people decided to stop running it. But then again, isn’t how enjoyable a game is totally subjective?
You can’t make an objective argument for the enjoyability of a game apart from what number of people hold x opinion and what number of people hold y opinion, which still doesn’t prove whose right. You say they’re legitimate, and yes, I actually do think some of them are legitimate, but I pointed them out anyway for the purpose of the post.
But there’s a magnitude of complaints that get thrown around that make no sense to me. One of the most egregious and nearly infuriating for me? The trahearne stole the ps one. That makes me want to rip my hair out everytime I see it (I actually wouldn’t, i’m not stupid, but still.) I think you get the point.
I don’t seem to see these problems.
You don’t see these as problems, but your “compiled list of complaints” conveniently omitted the most egregious problems that have plagued this game since the Living Story was launched. There are legitimate complaints to be leveled against the Living Story, and you’re trying to gloss over them by highlighted the subjective or nitpicking complaints. You claim not to be a fanboy, but that kind of intellectual dishonesty doesn’t typically come from someone being objective.
I have not seen these “legitimate complaints” that you speak of. Are you talking about complaints about the living world in general? I ask because that wasn’t the original scope of this post, but if you want to know i’m fully aware of the whole “living world is temporary. story quality terrible. too grindy.” complaints about living world.
However, while I do think they should have done the story journal idea from the beginning (something akin to it was what I was expecting until we ended up getting living world. Been a sore spot for me since.), I don’t think the story quality was uber terrible nor was it too grindy.
Reasons? The story wasn’t a masterpiece but at least for me, it gave me a setting I happened to enjoy, meaning large, massive battles between a horde of players and a giant enemy/invading army. The fights were pretty fun, basically. That may not redeem the story entirely but it alleviates some of the problems of it to me, in terms of overall enjoyability.
And the grind is also very little in Guild Wars 2. Try playing even World of Warcraft, and you’ll quickly find other MMOs have long been more grindy. While there is a grind in guild wars 2, most of it is negligible or isn’t something required to play content.
I have not seen these “legitimate complaints” that you speak of.
Then you’re not looking very hard. How about you log into Frostgorge Sound and read the map chat the next time a wave a players are unable to progress the Living Story because a game-breaking bug that slipped past QA.
That? I’m aware of that bug, but that’s also a stupid complaint to make, at least if you’re complaining in a way that includes “This is bad. Terrible. I’m lagging. I might quit this game.”
Now if you’re complaining in a way that includes “Hey, I noticed there was this bug in Frostgorge. Just thought i’d let you know. Here are what seem to be what happens when the bug is triggered, etc.” then I have no problem with that. But that’s not the criticism i’m targeting or have a problem with.
EDIT: Also want to add, bugs happen in all games in all releases. That’s far from something to freak out over.

I think some people enjoy posting on the forums more than they enjoy playing the game. In fact, I’m sure of it considering how many post that they no longer play the game, even.
Go figure. /shrug

I actually happen to be a bit bored of the game lately and with no other games around to keep my interest, well, I resort to the forums! But, I will likely get back in the game in a few days. Still need my ambrite weapons and backpiece. So many geodes to farm…
Back on topic though, I agree, a lot of people who come on to the forums do so more often than they play the game. I think some flat out don’t even play the game at all, as per a post I vaguely remember from a while back when someone said exactly that about themselves, yet they were giving opinions on the game.
And like I’ve already said, there is constructive criticism to make. Some things just aren’t constructive though, which is the purpose of the post.
Want to quickly note: the guy who told me I was being intellectually dishonest, as if I was trying to intentionally give the reader false info… that was not my intention at all. I suppose he took it that way because he happened to see something that he thought I automatically had to have seen. Which is kind of odd to assume, to say the least.
If you want to see some constructive criticism, visit the infamous Hobosack thread in the engi forum. It is now well past its first anniversary heading strongly towards the second.
You’ll find lots of great ideas there how to alleviate a longstanding problem for the engineer class concerning the endgame content that is cosmetics . We even got a dev to post there some time in the past
You may ask what this does have to do with complaints about the content you posted above. Well at least half of those content updates held a backpiece as a reward.
Now the latest update lets you collect/craft items to build what?

It’s highly unlikely that any devs looking into the issue of backpacks for engineers are responsible for determining or creating the rewards for these content updates.
Should ANet stop making backpacks completely due to the issues that one profession has with them?

There fixed it for you

No, they should get rid of the kitten Hobosack.
Or at least add some other rewards suitable for engineers, like a runeset triggered by signets. Oh wait…

So because you don’t agree with me it’s automatically a troll post? Way to use the word troll as a buzzword. It’s awfully annoying when people use the word troll without even knowing what it’s supposed to mean. If anybody’s the troll, it’s you.

Quick question. When did I say that wasn’t constructive criticism? Why do people assume I don’t think there is constructive criticism? The whole point of the post is to point out how we complain about nonsensical things all the time. If something does make sense, then I have zero problem with pointing it out, so long as you aren’t whining and actually providing constructive criticism.
Also, I don’t play engineer and never frequent the engineer forums, and this is directed at complaints on this forum, not that of other forums. I know very little of what goes on in other forums because I rarely ever frequent them.

Yuph, I think it pretty much sums it up.
And you do make it clear there is a difference between what’s on the list, and constructive criticism. With people being people, there’s always going to be someone who carps and complains rather than takes the time to actually sit down, consider why they have a problem then discuss it logically.
But, the list was pretty amusing. Nearly killed my keyboard with soda.

Got to agree you can’t claim something was TOO hard when plenty of people were able to beat it? The tec issues were the only issue that I agree with all the rest was you just whinny.

Ah, right, I forgot about the tech issues. I do remember the frustration of Kiel deciding to go “Look! I’m not gonna proceed! GG guys!” But there were a lot of people who stopped doing it because they claimed it was too hard, as well, rather than because of the tech issues. At least, if I’m remembering correctly. Which, to be honest, though glitches and bugs are frustrating, as long as they get fixed, I really don’t care. Just don’t take like six months for it unless it’s a genuinely hard to fix problem.
There will always be someone unhappy about something in the world. So what you did is pick out those opinions and completely disregard and constructive criticism or even the praise. I could make a list with all those releases and list the praise that they got (because, they did.. it seems you missed all that.)
So what exactly does this narrowly-focused post achieve other than to be inflammatory?

It’s primarily meant to point out that we complain so much that it gets to a point where we, as a community, should sort of step back and think to ourselves, “?Is it really worth complaining about petty issues like this?” And I’ve already said I do think there is constructive criticism, and I have seen praise as well. But be honest, how much of either of those is there compared to the massive amounts of complaining that has been a feature of the living world forums for ages now?
And I think people missed the point on something. This is in the living world discussion forum for a reason. It’s directed at complaints about the living world in general. Points regarding engineers aren’t involved in this. If they were, I would’ve put this in the General Discussion forum.
Edit: Want to clarify what I mean by “living world in general” in this post versus a previous post, since I just noticed today the apparent hypocrisy due to lack of context. The previous post was referring to the living world as an entire concept, this post refers to the living world updates all encompassed into a summary. The same wording can be applied to both, but I don’t think I made the difference clear.

Troll post/thread. Ignore.
100% agree. and not going to be bothered adding anymore to it.
I don’t see what’s wrong about it. All the complaints made lead to improvements in the later versions of those events. So what is your exact complaint here?

Scroll up and read the numerous posts I made answering this very question.
There is absolutely nothing constructive about this thread. At least the people who cared enough to voice their criticism have given ArenaNet feedback to reflect on for how they can improve, whether it was all warranted or not.

So you’re saying it’s not constructive to maybe suggest we, as a community, step back a bit and think to ourselves whether some of the issues we are complaining about are really worth complaining about?
This entire thread was meant to be humorous, but people seem to have taken offense to something that shouldn’t even be taken offense to. Is it really that offensive to suggest, albeit in a joking manner, that perhaps we should focus on more important things?
Like the original post says, we jump the gun on updates and threaten to quit, etc. all the time. That is what this thread is aimed at. You’re telling me jumping the gun on updates is something not worth talking about, something that should never be questioned whatsoever?
I feel like people aren’t even reading the entire thread…
