Give achievements the first time through
No thanks. I wouldn’t want to be thinking about achievements on my first playthrough of the new stories. I just want to immerse myself and enjoy the story as it is, without having to think about getting all the achievements/rewards right away. The achievements would actually get in the way of me enjoying the story on the first playthrough. They certainly did in season 1. Therefore this is a positive change, imo.

Then don’t do them on your first play. You can redo the dungeons later like you would do now.
As I said, I previously felt that the achievements were in the way of me enjoying the story on my first playthrough. Having the achievements there makes you focus on the achievements, so you can get them quick, instead of focusing on the story. It’s like when developers of a game force you to watch a cutscene the first time you get it. They do it so you’ll actually pay attention to the story. I personally feel I’m enjoying the story alot more now, mostly due to increase in quality but also due to this change.

Six of one half a dozen of another. You want immersion, awesome. You want to focus, great. But for you to have a chest pop up for doing something you didn’t know you did won’t put you out at all. And in the long run you will still do it again to grind those achievements. I on the other hand rely on my on-kill stacks and such so doing these story lines more than once to me is tedious and annoying, not to mention unrewarding.
Oh and you don’t have to focus on the achievements if you choose not to, I however have to do the same story twice, so who exactly is put out here?
it should be possible to get them on your first try as long as another character on your account has already completed the chapter.
No, that’s not how it works, Hyper. EACH character on your account must complete the story to unlock the ability to do the achievements on that character. For example, if I did the story the first time on Mesmer, the achievements are unlocked, but if I then did the story on my Ranger (her first time), I would still not be able to complete the achievements. I must either redo the story on my Mesmer, or complete it on my Ranger and THEN redo it on my Ranger.
It’s pointless busywork designed to increase replayability in a meaningless way. As a contrast, having each character being able to earn the rewards from completing the story IS a good way to increase replayability.

Pretty sure Hyper wasn’t claiming it’s actually working the way he said, but that it should work like that.
My big complaint would that if I happen to achieve one of the bonus achievements the first playthrough (eg. keeping all the workers alive in Tangle Root), it’d be nice if I could have that little surprise unlocked at the end of the chapter. I wasn’t trying to achieve it, but it happened. If it’s something especially difficult, like avoiding all of Aerin’s bombs, then I would be really annoyed to try and go back and achieve it again if I just happened to do it the first time (unlikely, but possible).
Now, if the achievements were something that could only be done the second time through, because something new was there, then I wouldn’t mind as much.
I’d rather not be distracted by Achievements while the story unravels. Even if they’re hidden, being able to achieve them on the first run will have me (and likely others) playing the guessing game rather than the story.
So from what I am seeing very few of you have a problem with not getting stacks or loot drops not once but twice. And even though there is a completion reward for doing it once you’re out of luck the second time around if you don’t get any achievement chests. You may even have to do it three of four times (again for NO loot) if you are unable to complete any of them.
It is a good thing they are optional, because I cannot see myself ever getting them, nor do I ever see myself putting on a set of thumbscrews (no reward either) just for fun.
