Ley Line Connection With Southsun?
Well, there are waypoints on the island, so I guess it’s possible.
Given that the karka are from deep under the sea, however, I think it’s more likely that they used to live in a ley line nexus before Bubbles chased them out. Now that they’ve got a new home, they’re making it look as much like the old one as they can.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
Didn’t Scarlet have a thumper on Southsun Cove? It’s possible there is a ley line there. (Then again, didn’t she have a Thumper in Borderlands too?)
Does everything in game need Ley lined?
Seriously. Go on google and type “Ley lines and -random-” It is hilarious.
my fave is Ley lines and dogs, with interesting theories (with statistics even) that dogs relieve themselves on Ley line alignments.
Ley lines and Bigfoot. Ley lines and Mind control. Ley lines and the Illuminati. Ley lines and the bermuda triangle. Ley lines and the CIA. Ley lines and insomnia. Ley lines and Ghosts, vampires, werewolves, satan, anything paranormal, disasters, politics..On and on.
So they got dumped into the game. Could we just not apply them to everything? They kill interesting and original speculation.
Its enough that WPs now guarantee Ley lines. It’s enough that Asuran Magitech is now largely..Oh, Leylines. It’s enough that the 6 Gods magic and Bloodstones and Dragons and Scarlett are now "oh, cuz ley lines.
No need to rope the Karka or every other mystery in game into them as well.

If we get to Cantha, maybe they’ll make everything rely on Feng Shui instead.

Well… Isn’t is pretty much the same thing as, because MAGIC!…
I mean, Ley Lines just answer the question why Magic?
Because Ley Lines… but really it doesn’t mean a kitten thing.
Ley Lines simply deliver magical energies to places. The answer, whether or not Ley Lines exist, is still, because magic.
The appearance of ley line weapons and the ley line hub is probably based on hag stones, which folklore would have it are lucky.
Hag stones are stones with holes, often created by wave action. So the similarly with Southsun is probably superficial.

Magic is the leap of faith I do prior to logging onto a fantasy world. Like accepting that a fantasy world has gravity. When I fall off a cliff I don’t “hmm. I suspect gravity at work here” nor do I theorize a gravity well and start drawing lines.
Ley lines.. no. Ley lines were originally a theory that there were “physical” linear pathways between prehistoric human sites. No magic, no mysticism. There was some evidence of those paths from early aerial photography and observation, although faint and disputed.
The mystical and new earth movements of the 60s re-invented the concept, with invisible and “magical” lines. Trouble is, if the paths are invisible and undetectable, you can create lines and paths between “events” and locations to create whatever network you wish and use those events or locations to “prove” the lines. Pretty convenient, and why anything you choose can be “ley lined”.
Ley lines are a stock, artificial, malleable, pseudo science mechanic that can somewhat explain everything. They stifle creative theorycrafting and lore. We didn’t need them. Just because they have become the explainitall of choice does not make them interesting, valid, or original.
I would prefer an Asura explanation of how they managed to focus energy in linear paths to transfer matter over “oh. Ley lines”.
I’d like an explanation of why a Dragon with access to conduits of magic wouldn’t just stay there absorbing it if that is their prime and natural function.
I’d like an explanation why all settlements have waypoints, and all waypoints are on ley lines, when some settlements predate waypoints, and then had those waypoints built in ignorance of ley lines. Pretty huge and needless chunk to digest, when the simple statement that Magic permeates the world has already been made.
With ley lines, we won’t get explanations. We will get more ley lines.
What I hate is what I see already happening. The “question” is already turning from “how and why” to “hmm. must be a ley line.”
Stifling. We are stuck with them, but I still cringe when I see them used to rationalize anything in game. Some things deserve their own mysteries and magics instead of hammering a ley line over them.

Yeah! They obviously should have been Ley-Fractals. There’s even precedence!
Then Mordremoth could have been Mandelbrot.

well, you’re not going to like what’s coming, seeing as they’re already hinting that every differing view of magic and the supernatural is actually just the lens of cultural perception looking at the same thing. The Gods, the dragons, the Eternal Alchemy, animal spirits – all the same thing, at different stages and with different masks.
Why’s the dragon not sitting idle any more? q.v. end of season 1. Already explained.
Why are all settlements on ley lines? Organisms are attracted to resources. q.v. http://www.wired.com/2010/01/slime-mold-grows-network-just-like-tokyo-rail-system/
Better question: are settlements set up on nexi because they can draw magic better from them, or do nexi form on settlements because of the confluence of magic there?
…snip…

Interesting what you say about settlements and ley lines. Definitely there is the large hub in Lion’s Arch because Taimi says so (and Scarlet’s focus on drilling there). That may be the largest and an area that I would love to see. Possibly there is a mutual attraction and that explains why the various populations settled where they did. It also seems the asurans in developing their gate technology have theorized but were never able to really prove the relationship until now. And maybe some of the other legends of the various races are attributable to this relationship. As you said, a lens of cultural perception….

Eyeroll? cute. Way to encourage a less than polite response.
BTW, the concepts you brought up could have been used without use of a hackneyed, unoriginal, overused, cut and paste “everyfantasy” plot device. Ley lines.
Plot mechanics should build off the lore and with the lore. Not the reverse, where they have dropped in a too common, one size fits all canned plot device and then remade the lore to fit it. Retroactively. Tyria deserved better.
But… you missed that point entirely.
PS. Sendentism is far more complex than simple migration to resources.
Eyeroll.

The less than polite response is expected when the original post is bordering on hostile. And I’ll keep rolling those eyes till I make point or get a seven.
You keep using the word “overused”, so this should be easy. Name twenty video games outside of GW2 that use the ley line trope. tvtropes.org manages 12 out of a…. I dunno, 40 year history of video games? Surely something overused has to be more widespread.

Overused period. Never implied just games. Try harder.

And that list does not include the very large list of new earth mystics and internet crackpots who think they exist IRL and link them to every mystery possible. Because, you can.
