Living story Achievements take too much time
GW2 living story remminds “Penny’s Arcade” game :P other then that i cant even follow the history, everythign looks out of context and random events.
LS is happening way to fast and w/o any immersion.
Being emailed by Thackery “Hey go to X place” and then ok cool new zone now what?
“my 2cents”
Agree, I won’t be able to finish the LS achievements (don’t have time), and as a “100% completed” type of gamer I have nightmares of unfinished achievements…god kitten it. I hope they will disappear from the achievement panel after the end of LS or something like that :-)
Yeah I tend to agree. Most people can’t play weekdays until they get home, and they might actually leave the house on weekends. It’s stressful trying to get so much stuff done in the game in limited windows.
I actually think the recent updates of adding a new event every 2 weeks is way too fast, once a month was nice enough. There isn’t the time for a regular player to finish things, and it really disappoints me cause I liked the recent Bazaar of Four winds and didn’t get the chance to finish it.
And if ya don’t want my flail,
better shake that mighty tail! Aw yeah!

You can still do the Bazaar achievements? They didn’t really go anywhere.
I feel the same way. I love GW2 and I’m yet to finish my 100% world completion. But LS “always gets in my way”. Most of the new content has been fun, but the completionist inside me makes me go for almost all the LS achievements. And the time I take to complete them could go to world completion or even other games I love and like to play. And I can’t always play during weekdays.
I try to stick to “complete only the necessary for the meta achievement”, but I almost always fail at that goal. =(
You guys do know that achievements are SUPPOSED to be difficult and/or time consuming, right?
“Physics will do the rest.”
Of course achievements are supposed to be difficult and time consuming,, but there is a problem that they are only temporary. You just have to do it now, because you wont have any chance to complete them later. So its absolutely all right that they take time and affort to achieve, but why do you have to do it every 14 days? I am not saying that I can not finish them all, but I dont have any time at all to enjoy the rest of the game. The living story should be about story, not about minigames. Minigames shouldnt be temporary, that is my opinion…
Achievements are all but difficults. It’s only farming successes when you’re tired of farming gold…
So my point is that I am forced to do this achievements, which take all my free time, and dont have any time to really enjoy the game.
Achievements are 100% optional, you are in no way forced to do them.
focus your game time on what you enjoy doing, not on completing something you feel is a time-consuming chore.
If you feel bad about missing out on some rewards/titles… well, that’s just how it goes for those of us with limited game time. Might be time for you to re-evaluate what are realistic in-game goals.

This is not the issue at all. Being time limited is the issue. I don’t care if it takes me 20 hours to get a single achievement, as long as I am free to spend those 20 hours over the course of how ever long I want to spend it. Having to spend 20 hours within a very limited window is where the real issue lies.
If you look at the achievements that have been around since launch such as the slayer achievements or the jumping puzzles, people can work towards those goals over the long term and are not forced to focus solely on ones they know are going to disappear. If I want to spend today farming 500+ bats for the bat slayer achievement b/c I feel like it, and then 2 months later want to do the same thing to finish it off, then I am free to do that. If I wanted to get 7 races done today in the Sanctum Sprinter (b/c I felt like it) and finish the rest 2 months from now, that is not possible. Meaning I now would have to “force” myself to finish those races even if I did not feel like doing them at that particular time. (This is only an example, so please take this with a grain of salt.)

+1 !
more achievements in the world and less achievements in the content update with time restrictions!
What-in-earth are you talking about? It takes maybe 4-5 hours to complete each meta of the latest round and that’s not even sweating it! You have two weeks to complete them. If you can’t spare 10 hours over 2 weeks, how in the name of everything that is good do you feel you should be entitled to get those achievements?
Every time I read these posts I’m beginning to feel my joke about people wanting the “achievements” mailed to them when they log in wasn’t a joke after all…
You make me lose faith in gamers. Gamers are supposed to actually play the games.
Lets say I gave you a task, to gather 250 onions.
Not a particularly difficult task, however for your troubles I will give you 1 gold. Now, wait a moment, before you get started, you only have 30 minutes to accomplish this.
Ahhh, see how a seemingly easy, albeit repetitive task suddenly became much harder?
What if I were to then say, that it has to be completed in 30 minutes, but you also have to start right now regardless of what else you’re doing. I don’t care if you’re in the middle of class, about to go to bed, in line buying groceries…..you must start now.
See how a simple task suddenly becomes a bit of a hassle? So what are you going to do? Buy them off the trading post, ask your friends, beg map chat?
I’m fairly certain you’re going to start looking for other ways to accomplish this.
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!
In addition, I want you to accomplish this with at least two of the following.
- only using your left hand
- only using the keyboard
- while downloading your entire dropbox folder and streaming Netflix
- while you prepare hotdogs for your best friend
- with your graphics setting set to twice what your computer can handle
There, now you’re set. All you have to do is this super easy task of collecting 250 onions.
I feel the same way about the limited time achievements. I don’t like that it is trying to force me to do something (do it now or miss out on it) So, I do what I always do when I feel like I am being forced to do something. I quit. I am not playing it. I wont do it. shrug I’ll keep my eye on this game and the forums, I want to play. I love this game. I love puzzles, I love exploration, I love doing things when I want to do them. Three things this game has gravitated away from recently. Until they remember those things I wont be back.

This.
It would me take every free minute to get all the achievements in the set time. Normally I play a few hours a week, sometimes I do not have the time to play at all for a few weeks. But when I am free for a few days, I want to do what I missed.
Just not possible, that’s why I gave up and now the game feels completely empty, as the LS is ading no story and no content except for a few mini games and achievements.
I am glad that you guys get the point. I personaly have over 11k achievement points so it is not like I dont like challange. But its holiday, 40°C in shadow, and you are forced to do minigame achievements. I am using the word “forced” on purpose, because I really feel like I am being forced to do it. The problem is the time limit. The example with onion is very good example of how I feel. Now tell me, is it so hard to make this achievements permanent? Or do you really force working players to do these achievements in their free time while there is sunny day with 40°C outside?
Like I said, I really apreciate what is Anet doing, but time consuming achievements are not supposed to be temporary.
And I really feel like achievements should be about skill, not about time you spent in the game.
While we are already speaking about achievements… It all loses point since there are dailies and monthly and someone who started today already lost like 6k achievement points only from daily and monthly…

So what happens if during those two weeks I lose power? Or I am going on vacation? Or I simply do not feel like working on those? Those achievements are now completely lost, nothing I can do about it. If you look at an achievement system like World of Warcraft, those achievements are going to be around FOREVER. I could theoretically take a 6 month break, completely miss multiple tiers of content, come back, and start a run to work on those achievement points for boss kills, crafting, PvP kills, etc. I could be gone for multiple expansions and still be able to go back and get everything that I missed. Like I initially said in my post, it doesn’t matter if the task is challenging or not and I am in no way asking for it on a silver platter, but making something time limited does not add difficulty, only frustration.

I finished every temporary achievement so far and I share your opinion…
This two week madness is quite frightening for an achievement collector..
Always remember one thing – your opinion is your opinion not fact.
In addition, things that I would normally just laugh and shake my head now cause me extreme frustration because of the temporary time sensitive nature of the current game.
I just posted a thread about my frustration of the buff wearing off and not noticing it….then the dungeon and daily complete and I didn’t get either achievement reward due to the stinking buff. Now if I would have time to recover from this, I would have laughed at myself. But since I’m going out of town for a week starting tomorrow, I am extremely frustrated and annoyed with the game. :/

Did you read the OP post? It takes YOU 10 hours spread out over 2 weeks. It is taking the OP much longer than that. And no where did it say they did not want to play the game. The complaint was that they are TEMPORARY.
Why can’t they add in new things every two weeks for the fast people with a lot of time to spend in game and then just leave it in the game. Then the rest of us can finish it, just at a much slower pace than you super fast people.
You guys do know that achievements are SUPPOSED to be difficult and/or time consuming, right?
No, I don’t know or agree with this. Achievements have to be handled with moderation. We’re not playing this to suffer to the point of rage quit or spend all weekend for one. That is not a FUN gaming experience for many. The living story and it’s achievements should be a fun and pleasant experience to undertake.
Especially when they are temporary!
btw… when did such narcissism become the norm? When did compassion become so out of fashion? To see people accusing others of being “entitled” at the drop of a hat is deplorable.

My bottom line stands. If you can’t play the game, you don’t deserve the achievements. End of story.
I took a break from GW2 and I’m missing the molten alliance endless mining pick and all the achievements related to those events. Do you see me whining on the forums about those?
No. Man up. Those achievements are not or at least should not be something you lose sleep over, or come to the forums to whine about.

Well, you obviously don’t get the point. Nobody said that we can’t play the game. The point is that we are forced to play these minigames and we can’t play anything else at all.
I won’t write anything else because you won’t probably get the point anyway

I do get the point. The point is you feel you’re entitled to get the achievement without a) spending some time in the game or b) doing anything that requires any skill whatsoever.
Both metas can be achieved with absolutely zero skill (it will take some time) or very minimal time (takes some skill).
I’m sorry that you cannot get an achievement (look that up in the dictionary?) without any effort or time invested.

Not, you don’t get the point. It’s not like we don’t want to invest the time or we are noobs who can’t achieve something hard. The only problem is that these minigames are temporary. I would do it one day… If I were bored or something… but you just have to do it now! That is the problem and the only one problem. Noone cares about how much time it takes or how much skilled you must be.

Obviously you do care.
Let me rephrase. You do not need to get those achievements. No one is putting a gun to your head and say you need them to enjoy GW2. You’re imposing this problem on yourself, but are unwilling to solve that problem by putting in the effort required.
It’s like you have an optional course with an exam coming in two weeks. You decide you want to pass that optional course, but don’t want to spend time reading for it, because hey, it’s summer and all.
Don’t want to invest the time now? Fine, don’t do it. You just don’t get that achievement. No big deal.
Do I also have to mention that they also introduced an activity which has achievements (quite a bunch of them, in fact) that don’t have a time limit?
As Tom Gore stated above you are not “forced” to do these achievements. As Colin Johanson has said right from the moment this game was announced, this game is all about being a dynamic, ever changing living world.
Lets use an example. " You buy a ticket to go watch Andy in the finals of Wimbledon but decide not to go because something came up you decided to do instead." Now you cant then go to Wimbledon the next day and receive the same experience as all those people who “chose” to go there when it happened. Not going to happen. The world moves on. now lets switch the example over " Some guys has offered you £100 if you can bring him 250 onions in 30 mins and you know there is a one time 50% off onions sale at your local supermarket but your train to Wimbledon is in 5 mins and you decide to catch that train missing this one time deal and £100." Life is about choices my friends and this is the type of game this is. If you cant handle the simple facts lined out at in this games introduction I think you best find another game because there will always be temporary content.
On the other hand the developers have said that from now on they will be bringing more lasting changes into the game as there LS team rotation starts to pick up steam. I totally agree with this as I believe there has to also be lasting changes to the world to make it feel alive. Sadly for the gamers who make the choice to not make the time commitment to the game the temporary content will sadly elude you until you decide you actually “want” to play the game.
P.S. vote Kiel for president.

And the funny thing is theres no way Anet can satify everybody. When LS was on a 1 month cycle they cry was “Too little content Far too slow” Now were geting “Too Fast”. Youll notice that much of the LS content is still around for at least a month. Dragon bash content was still runing during aetherblades. Bazar of the 4 winds is still runing during cutthroat politics. We know at least 1 of the minigames will stick around after CtP finishes and I wouldnt be surprised at all if the other returns 6 months down the line.
Heck I went on vacation the day after 4 winds droped and was away from my computer for 10 days and I still got almost all the achievements for it in the couple of days between my return and CtP droping.
The balance still needs to be found for time needed to complete achievements. The BotFW achievements are around for a month yet, cutthroat politics is around for 2 weeks. its the 2 week achievements that I am finding difficult due to the time needed. (i.e 6 days to do Evon & Kiel dailies) & time gated achievements.
I spend about 1-2 hours a day playing yet i feel like I’m forced to do the Politics stuff and not other achievements due to the time frame involved.
I think this situation only shows how the gmae is feeding on eof the worst parts of society, actually is resumed simly in one sentence, all those who dont get how time limit achievements affect the situation, are resumed in this sentence and iss ad ANET encourages it:
“I want you to not have what i have, because you not having it is what makes me like it”
In other words, anet could simply let all these achievements be obtainable later for everyone especially new players, and collectors, they dont care if you keep them hard to obtain or to much time investment to get, people like me who complain is just because they are temporary and they will never go back thats all, AND if u defend that temporary achievements that no one will get like you did is what makes them special then u fall in the sentence i posted and that is really sad. But more sad is anet encouraging this kind of atittude.
And NO this is not the real world we came here to relax and enyoy free time not to stress about getting the same insatisfactions as in the real world, because if u want real world similarities then make character who die never ressurect again and so you lose everything they did on ur account THAT would be real world, but no, you only defend the fact u want others to not get what you got and that is, pure egoism and anet is encouraging it

I request that the time to complete a Living World content be lengthened. Due to the overlap, between one content ending and another beginning, I am not satisfied with the amount of time allow to complete the content, I am request that this time be lengthened 1 -2 weeks, allowing for a total time of 5 weeks minimum. It is frustrating to work on a Living world content and have it complete after 3 weeks. Once completed there is no way to try and finish the achievements. Further dividing time between 2 contents adds to the frustration. I know that you are continually developing new content to keep the game fresh but please allow sufficient time for the content to be fully experienced and achieved. Thank you.
Here’s the thing.
You have one demographic (A) that wants to spend a lot of time playing their MMO. They also want things to do while playing. We all know a lot of players don’t do content if there’s nothing to “work” towards. So, there are constant content additions which also have achievements.
You also have another demographic (B) that cannot or will not play as often (no matter the reason). They also want things to do. They also want the rewards that accompany the content. They also want achievements.
Yet, at least some of both A and B are completionists. If an achievement exists in the game, they want to complete it. Do you see the conflict there?
MMO’s have always had some content and some rewards that favor those who spend a lot of time playing the game. You cannot cater to the completionists in group B while simultaneously providing the entirety of group A with fresh content plus rewards plus achievements on a schedule designed for their play style.
Solutions?
Reduce the number and/or time commitment of achievements in general. This lowers incentive to play for some people in both groups. So, probably not ideal.
The completionists in B could adjust their expectations. While this is going to seem the ideal solution to players in group A, part of B will like this less (or not at all).
Each four weeks we have a new “episode,” broken into two 2-week releases. Front-load the lion’s share of the achievements in the first release, and add only a small number in the second 2-week period. This would at least give the people who play less frequently four weeks for most of the achievements rather than two.
That’s all I’ve got right now.
I don’t mean to ruffle any feathers, but why not just don’t worry about the Achievement Points? I mean, they are really just random lists used by ANet to tap into that vulnerable gamer psyche which compels them to “finish stuff” at any cost. But the things themselves aren’t really meaningful.
I could create the same exact effect using different variables. I’ll let ya’ll decide if it’s silly or not:
Taking my Dog for a Walk Achievement
- 5 points: purchase red leash from specific store
- 2 points: walk dog to City Park
- 10 points: engage dog in dog-activities for 30 minutes
- 2 points: walk dog to Longs Park
- 10 points: engage dog in dog-activities for 30 minutes
- 2 points: walk dog to Oak Park
- 10 points: engage dog in dog-activities for 30 minutes
- 5 points: walk dog to City Square
- 4 points: make dog do a flip in the air while balancing on a park bench full of squirrels
- Earn Achievement!: 50 points
I’d bet the farm that some gamer’s wives could get their hubbies to do this, with enthusiasm, every day if they made it an achievement.
I troll because I care
