Returning player, quick story question.
Yes, I’m pretty sure if you haven’t unlocked them by logging in while those Maguma stories were active, you will have to buy them.
Even if you didn’t finish your own personal story, you can unlock the new one just by loggin in to the game on the right timeframe. But you wouldn’t be able to play it until you finish the first ps.
So, if you unlocked it, go kill Zhaitan and then will play the new ps for free. If you didn’t unlock it, go kill Zhaitan and then will need to pay to play the new ps.

Well…that is pretty kittenty. I just started playing 3-4 days ago so the only story I can do right now is “The Dragon’s Reach, Part 1”, with “Gates of Maguuma” and “Entanglement” blocked by a pay gate.
What does that mean for new players? Are they SoL and gonna be forced to pay for the missed parts of the story if they start in a month or near the end of this current story arc?

About as SOL as any player that comes later to a game and has to shell out the money for any expansion that came out for it. LS works in a similar manner, but the nice thing is that if you are actually playing when the patch goes live, you get it for free during its ‘debut’ period.
However, you do not need to buy the previous two to experience the story. Anet has stated that you can team up with someone that has that story unlocked, and can play through it with them. You do not get any of the achievements, or story ‘progression’ for it, but you still can at least experience it. If you decide you want the associated achievements, then you can opt to buy it.
Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Actually, you can play the new LS without finishing the PS, it just won’t make sense because it takes place afterwards.
Q. I’ve completed Gates of Maguuma and Entanglement, got the mail from Kasmeer – now I’m in the Omphalos Chamber and there’s no Kasmeer, Rox or Braham.
Do have to finish my PS to progress with Dragon’s Reach ?
