Spoiler: I'm not ok with this
Lol I agree.

I’m not ok with uniting with the Charr, but I guess we don’t get to choose.

Yeh, kill all charrs, traitors to all Tyria etc.
I’m not okay with brining the world leaders together instead of ambassadors. I’m not okay with the most famous guild that was formed to slay Elder Dragons not bring present for a meeting about slaying an Elder Dragon. I’m not okay with only Vigil having a Pact/Order representative at the summit. I’m not okay that all the world leaders gave in so simply. I’m not okay with Knut claiming to be over 150 years old and knowing such youth when aged norn live to only roughly 120 while still being physically active. I’m not okay with someone who agreed to show with no strings attatched earlier suddenly spouts she cannot help when Kryta is arguably in the best situation it’s been in for roughly 2 generations.
But I guess I don’t have a choice.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
I’m with the OP. This was a scripted event where my character was used to push Taimi to give up her invention. This is the perfect spot where player decisions can be used to push the story forward. Well, if it’s a personal story….
LS2 isn’t a personal story at all. It’s a scripted event.
(edited by Herr der Friedhoefe.2490)
I am absolutely ok with everything….
If someone asks me the Dragon can wipe out everything and everyone until
a real hero finally comes and beats him up.
No heroes more available…… like real life
It’s so scripted and lacks anything interesting. It’s cluttered with empty dialogue. And why would Anet ever believe that a single player in this game would just LET Phlunt take Taimi’s device? I would stomp that little weasel into the dirt and drag his corpse to the meeting before I let him take anything from Taimi. His actions almost got her killed. Most disappointing moment since Tybalt…

“For a few to be immortal, many must die.”
Man so much negativity here, and I came thinking this was just a little joking thread :/
I for one thought the story was awesome, especially the World Summit.
“Phlunt, if you’re backing out of the deal, then fine. Taimi, turn off your device. We’ll order the Pact to start destroying waypoints and gates immediately.”
“What’s that? You say I can’t do that? I can and I am. I am the Commander of the Pact, and I AM IN CHARGE HERE! If you are unwilling to do your part and help us against the dragons, then we’ll do it without you. The cost to you and yours will not be considered. Leave, or I and my team will execute you and leave your corpses for the vultures. Once the waypoint network is destroyed, the dragon will attack the only place such energy remains. The rest of us will have time to gather our forces while it devours Rata Sum.”
“What’s that? You were, perhaps, a bit hasty? Yes, I thought so too.”
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
Maybe the writers have taken some of GoTs (and other soap operas) writing to heart, because this sort of emotional manipulation of the audience is exactly what they do to keep you hooked.
Don’t worry, eventually the villain gets their comeuppance.
Actually, as a Commander of the Pact I think it is way more in-character that the player character defers to the Council Asura, instead of giving in to Taimi who – despite being a traveling companion and genius – is still a child and has acted irresponsibly several times throughout the story. That’s of course very much in-character for her, but from the viewpoint of a Commander it is clearly the better choice to defer to the experienced Asura of the Council. Phlunt might be a snarky kitten like most of them, but he probably didn’t obtain his position (in a culture that seems to be based on meritocracy) by being incompetent.

You have a point. However, expecting Taimi to just roll over and take it is wrong. You should be making it VERY clear that Taimi is the inventor, and she WILL be getting full credit in official records. If he tries to claim credit for it or any related inventions, he’ll look like an idiot that steals his best ideas from children.
If need be, I’d do this by giving Taimi a battlefield promotion to the Vigil’s lead expert on the matter, with all requests for information about such subjects needing to be directed through her. (And then, have a quiet talk with her about not abusing her new rank, unless she wants to be buried in paperwork and never see a lab again.)

man i felt sorry for taimi in this episode. her invention got confiscated and she almost got killed. d’aww.
We kept shouting encouragements to Taimi, mainly telling her to run off with HER invention…

It doesn’t matter what the excuse is. The point is, it forces the player to do nothing about the fact that his/her friend is getting screwed over. That’s not how friends act in real life. In fact, if you were a commander in real life, you would probably still be biased toward your friend, instead of deferring to some schmuck just to keep the peace.

I don’t know if stating such things to Phlunt is even necessary. As far as I’ve understood (though I might be very wrong, I still have to make an Asura character one day!) stealing others’ inventions seems like a no-go in Asura society, a vile thing that’s more like associated with the InQuest. As far as I’ve understood Asura culture, it’s much more of a proof of one’s intellectual superiority (and thus granting more prestige) to invent something from the ground up, as opposed to stealing the ideas of someone else. To me it seemed like the Council wishing to examine it for the benefit of Asuran society as a whole (as they kind of built the waypoint network), since it’s obviously a groundbreaking device. I doubt that they would claim it as their own and erase all Taimi’s credit for it, since that just doesn’t seem the Asura way.
As a Pact Commander, I assume the player character is at least basically aware of such cultural customs, having worked extensively with the various races under his or her command.
Also as a Commander, giving Taimi a rank in the Vigil would be highly irresponsible, because she’s still a child. There’s actually a reference to that reasoning: somewhere around Vigil Keep there’s an NPC conversation that involves an enthusiastic kid begging a Vigil member to allow him to join their ranks, since he wants to help save the world. The Vigil guy seems endeared, but tells him that he can’t join them, because he’s still a kid. Eventually, he tells him he will talk to an officer (can’t recall that part exactly), to see if he might be allowed to help as a squire of sorts, cleaning swords etc.

I don’t. It just means if Phlunt messes up, I’m going for him. I can play the long-game.

No… just no lol Of course stealing another work is frowned upon in any culture. Even if Phlunt was taking the device so the council could further investigate and improve on it (which I do not think is the case), it was the way he did it that’s terrible. He didn’t ask, he didn’t show any respect, he didn’t assure Taimi that she would be credited, and he had no concern for this obviously amazing little girl. You’re selling out your friend because its easier when it would be entirely possible in many ways to defend her and keep him interested in the Summit. And remember this is a video game. Where the concepts of friendship, morality, and the will to stand up against any form of evil can and should be uncompromising. If I wanted to see people get treated with indifference by wealthy and powerful political figures, I would just watch the news.

I’m not OK with Taimi being present at all. She’s a child, she doesn’t belong in any of these areas. Not only is it completely unreasonable to bring her into hostile territory in the Maguuma jungle, but leaving her in a cave that attracts both Mordrem and Inquest? Even with a guardian that’s ridiculous.
The asura are a race of geniuses and as far as I know Taimi does not have an expertise background in waypoint studies. I’m confident that somewhere out in Tyria there is an asura that understands waypoints well enough to do what Taimi did, or even better than her.
Now we have an example of where being a child not only makes Taimi inappropriately vulnerable to an attack but also has her immaturity waste out time, puts her in danger and generally distracts from dealing with more important things. Taimi needs to go home.
The rest of us will have time to gather our forces while it devours Rata Sum.”
“What’s that? You were, perhaps, a bit hasty? Yes, I thought so too.”
this is almost exactly what was going through my head, just there was more kicking off of cliffs followed by grenades XD
I feel you should have been given the option to agree with Taimi that the invention is hers – EVEN IF in the end you still have to give it to Jerk Asura.
For example, during the conversation, you agree with Taimi, at which point you have a discussion with Jerk Asura that he should go to the meeting, or you’ll give him a wedgie. Jerk Asura can then say, “What are you going to do, kill me? You can’t force me to go.” At which point Taimi realizes there’s no other choice, and gives in.
Story still goes as story needs to go. You, the player, feel like less of a jerk. :p
She will get her stuff back eventually :P Or so Phlunt says. There was a hint that he was starting to warm up to her when he comments how impressive that was for someone her age, though the fact remains she’s a child and the Asura don’t particularly want them running around. Lore wise… she didn’t have a choice, it’s the rules! Also… yeah, I would have loved to beat Phlunt up, BUT…. we kinda needed him. So a choice wouldn’t have made sense.
I’m not okay with Knut claiming to be over 150 years old and knowing such youth when aged norn live to only roughly 120 while still being physically active.
Eh, The source of that(the lifespan) isn’t a direct quote so I’m willing to give it room to wiggle. At least, the source given on wiki.
Also the line can be taken as two ways, either Knut was alive during that time (probably young), or speaking as a moment of history. Least those were the first two things I thought of about it.

This… this was beautiful. I would love to see Rata Sum getting choked to oblivion by Mordremoth’s vines…
It also reminded me of a renegade Shepard telling the quarian fleet that they can get in line and work with the geth or go kitten themselves, because s/he won’t allow them to slaughter the geth who’s still being upgraded by Legion.
“Two years ago I saved you from Zhaitan in Orr. Just recently I took out Scarlet. But I’m through saving you. If you don’t get your old kitten to the Grove, Phlunt, I will stand and watch while the Mordrem lay you to waste. It’s your call… Keelah’selai.”

That, all of that. +50..if I could.
Leaders do actually meet for summits, but it did feel a little bit unwise to have them all meet in this manner, even if it seemed necessary at the time. I wonder if it’s possible to use other means of communication - holographics, basic sound relay. I like to think the tech is there. But that’s just me.
As for Taimi, I disagree with kids being in such situations, no matter how smart or creative they are (mothering instinct kicks in and goes all Ripley). It’s been shown that Scruffy will not take every beating that comes its way, and despite Taimi being so, so intelligent, she does not have the wisdom which comes with age. She’s currently min-maxed in that respect. She doesn’t have the dice rolls in her favour. She cannot be considered responsible due to being a kid; she’s not capable of making adult decisions, and the episode showed that, and her childishness, perfectly. Phlunt was a total kitten, mind, but he was right to take the device. The stereotypical arrogance of the asura may prevent his full credit to Taimi or even worse, but I recall mention she’s on good terms with Zojja, and if you’ve played the asuran personal story, you’ll know she’ll not let anyone get away with anything nefarious when it comes to the inventions of others. Honestly, though, I don’t think it’s too different to keeping a trust fund which a kid receives upon adulthood.
Now, to ensure Taimi grows up to be a sensible adult! Over to you, er... Braham.*
Oh.
*facepalm*
*To be fair, he seemed to grow up a little this time, was quite sweet to see.
I’m not ok with uniting with the Charr, but I guess we don’t get to choose.
Agreed.
I’ll never forget what they did to Ascalon.
I’m not okay with the most famous guild that was formed to slay Elder Dragons not bring present for a meeting about slaying an Elder Dragon.
Destiny’s Edge is disbanded? Why would members of a disbanded guild who now have other responsibilities come to a summit which already have attendees that are experienced with dragons.
I’m not ok with uniting with the Charr, but I guess we don’t get to choose.
Agreed.

You mean taking back their homelands from the humans who stole it from them?
In international diplomacy, making claims on territory on the basis that it used to be yours and you lost it in some past historical event is called ‘revanchism’. It’s not considered good behaviour, and certainly isn’t regarded as justification for anything, let alone employing weapons of mass destruction indiscriminately against a civilian population, which is what the Searing was.
And most cases of revanchism represent territories that were lost a lot more recently than twelve hundred years ago. Anybody who laid a claim on a territory on the basis that it was part of their nation over a thousand years ago would be laughed out of the UN. Unless perhaps if they happened to be a permanent member of the Security Council.
Actually… we’re told that a lot of asura councilors get the position because they weren’t able to dodge the appointment fast enough. There’s an example of this in Edge of Destiny, in fact. There are examples of asura who deliberately go after the position – but at best they’re like real-life politicians. With the added wrinkle that, since most asura have so little interest in governing that the Arcane Council has to rely on what is practically conscription to fill some positions, there is actually no guarantee whatsoever of competency. It’s one area where the general meritocratic tendency of asura doesn’t apply, because the best asura usually find ways to avoid being appointed to the council rather than trying to get on it.
On Knut’s age… as I recall, 120 was given as a rough average, but that was with the proviso that most norn tend to have last words along the lines of ‘Hey guys, watch this!’. It could be that 120 is for norn roughly what 50 or so is for humans today – a point at which you definitely can’t get away with things you used to be able to get away with, rather than being at the verge of dying of old age. Knut’s longevity might be based on his responsibility over Hoelbrak making him less inclined towards going out in a blaze of glory.
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.

You do realize you are trying to force real life definitions and norms on a fantasy world? And you bring in the UN as well?
Revanchism isn’t considered a good behaviour in OUR world, because the majority of the world says so. So if we wan’t to know if the charr (re)conquest was justified or not we need to play by GW rules.
Personally I think the asuras don’t give a kitten about it, the norns want to retake their homeland as well, so they can relate, maybe the sylvari will agree with the humans, but because they have such a unique world view it’s a 50-50 chance for them to take side with the charr in the matter.
Of course these are just speculations, but until the majority of Tyria will say that it is bad to take back your home, the charr will have rightful claim for Ascalon.
The Charr Human war over Ascalon is a continuation that has never stopped. It is not as though there has ever been a time gap of peace in between. There was none. The fortune of this war is a back and forth between the protagonists for a thousand/s of years.

Sadly Phlunt’s wiseness from age doesn’t show either as we literally had to slay a full Mordrem squad and BOSSES just to get him to ‘’think about it ’’
And even after the Dragon attacked the Summit and he cowardly hid behind the bodies of his guards , his dialogue still had doubts… DOUBTS.
I know which ’’leader’’ I will not save if Mordremoth decide to attack again.

So my options are to try and convince Taimi, a genius with a bright and promising future, to give up a recently built device that will no doubt look like child’s play when she is an adult and making truly amazing things, so that I can get a Councillor of the Asuran leadership to attend a summit with the purpose of saving the world…
Or I can tell Taimi to keep her invention, tell Plunt to go grease his own wheels, risk the summit, and probably kitten the world to destruction, ensuring Taimi will never become an adult and never surpass what she’s done to this point?
I’m sorry. My character, being a rational adult, would try to convince Taimi to give it up. There is a big picture here. Taimi’s got a long life ahead of her to do better than the measly work Phlunt is going to steal now.

Right. And if I understood correctly, her device calibrates waypoints. Calibrates. Once Mordremoth is gone, I can think of no practical use for it, unless the Asura decide to start min-maxing their electricity bill.

That’s just the thing though… you have no options at all. The character is written 100% for you in this and if you don’t like its personality, then tough stuff.
I mean, it wouldn’t be hard to add another dialogue option that leads to the same quest conclusion – just with you having the ability to talk a little more aggressively if you so desire.
Besides, I don’t play video games to roleplay being an adult. I can do that for real in my life.

Maybe I wouldn’t mind having a dialogue option to talk more aggressively if the situations were reversed. However, Phlunt has something I don’t have; a seat on the Arcane Council. What do I have that he wants? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. By Asuran law Taimi’s invention is technically his to take custody of. I can’t really fight that, and doing so just works further -against- my goal.
The reality of the situations is, it sucked, but that quality of sucking, helps make Tyria feel alive and real. An aggressive option or one leading to Taimi keeping her work but us getting the same end, would just make me feel like Tyria is very fake, and my character is infallible. I know that, technically, we’re infallible as is. However, no-win situations like this help mitigate that. It shows the PC isn’t a god amongst men who always gets his or her way.

While I see your point, I would like to point out the “God Walking Amongst Mere Mortals” title. >:D

Except that depending on how you view the situation (some people are perfectly ok with the single route afforded to the PC) you are getting your way and so is the PC.
The thing is, in most MMOs, I expect nothing from quests like these in terms of choice, but in GW2, they give you choice throughout most of the story, even if it is minimal. So to change that and leave out choice (even if it is a choice in expressing your PC’s personality) just feels lazy.
They are writers. They can make a few dialogue options work in ways that we can’t because we’re looking back on what they already set in stone by releasing it. I have come to expect a player experience that can be mildly personalized – I’m really not asking for much here; it’s not like I’m asking for an entirely separate branch of quests just to give us choice.
I mean, think of it this way: If the PC is defined by his/her single logical options in the story, then it is no longer your character – it is just another NPC and you happen to be moving it around and fighting stuff during various parts. And it’s certainly not “your story.”

During the World Summit, the part where Taimi said “Phlunt. I hope he trips on his robes.”, just made me laugh irl. I was really anticipating that it would happen (I mean Phlunt really deserve it). It would have been pretty hilarious.
I suspect Taimi will get her revenge on Phlunt… After all she has shown her skills are far above what he can do. I suspect Phlunt simply did what most other asurans do – appropriate. Now if he tries to “improve” the device I am willing to bet he will have to come crawling to Taimi to get it fixed.
Taimi behaved like a complete brat, I’d have giving her an old fashioned telling off given the chance!
She nearly got herself killed, I had to waste my time rescuing her. And then that twit of a Norn behaved like the nublet was the injured party. Cross, I was furious!
Hey ho. Did enjoy the fights though with my Ele
While I agree that this decision is two sided, that fact alone shows that many players would side with Taimi. I was among them, and this entirely took me out of the immersion at that point in the story. It is good that our characters are more than silent protagonists tagging along and hitting things, but writing such a controversial decision with no options detracted from an otherwise excellent episode from me.
Giving dialogue options that ultimately end with the same result would have been fine. If I’d have been able to argue Taimi’s side, but she ultimately gave it up herself, then okay. But this was a big way to ruin our attachment to our characters and the story, which is a shame because the writing is clearly good enough for me to care if Taimi got screwed or not.
Honestly the part when Taimi saying why she had to sacriface her device, I wanted to make a remark at how Majory had “sacriface” her sister. Ok granted hers was an accident but still.
Anyway, sure I didn’t wanted Taimi to lose her invention but they were kind of desperate since if they had the time, couldn’t they get another council member to joined the summit? Beside being famous for a device is useless when everyone had been killed by the dragon.

No stealing from a child…..
