Maybe it’s just me, but after beating this episode GW2 is starting to sound much like Mass Effect and bits and pieces of a Japanese RPG story line (e.g., Final Fantasy, Mana Series (Seiken Densetsu), Chrono Chross)…let me explain right quick…

As explained by Ogden, Dragons come every so millennia to wipe out everything on Tyria…let races grow again…rinse and repeat…

In Mass Effect, Reapers come every so millennia or longer to wipe out (harvest) everything in the galaxy/universe…let races grow again….rinse and repeat…

In most JRPG, nature is very much connected together through some physical means…example: Mana Tree…or for those that played Chrono Cross, each dragon in the game was linked to an element…but the main point that if one piece is killed, this causes things to become unbalanced yada yada yada

Makes you wonder what’s gonna happen now since Zhaitan is dead….deadish….but Zhaitan and all the other dragons we kill are just going to respawn a millennia from now….HMMMmmmm Guild Wars Advance Warfare….ROBOT DRAGONS!?

Respawn may be the wrong word…more so all dragons are dead, then so is all magic…hmmmmmmmmm……but hey, the Gods can intervene again and bring them back… idk

Yeah, Mass Effect wasn’t the first to do this . . . what comes to mind more is Great Old Ones and how you can’t “kill” them. No, you can just discorporate them.

It’s not that Guild Wars 2 is becoming more like other games, it’s that many games in general have frequently adopted myths and legends from a variety of cultures around the world.

This.

And once you have ~100 basic myth flavours and 36 basic plots but 100 000 games, books and movies, things eventually start repeating themselves. In the end, it’s not really about the plot as it’s already happened in other creations before, but about the flavouring details which make it desirable.

As for games adopting myths, I really liked how ALfheim Online spoke about a future MMO system which will be automatically scanning Internet for myths and generating quests based on those; unfortunately, that was one of the really nice concepts which got buried in the over-haremy novel and a poor anime adaptation.

20 level 80s and counting.
