While there are obviously still some hitbox and lag issues remaining in some spots of World 2, the complaining from all of you people is absolutely disproportionate to that.

Tribulation mode is designed to be absurdly hard, unfair in every way, and challenging to get through.

Josh Foreman should be feeding on the tears of you whiners, and reveling in the satisfaction of a job well done!

Unfair in every way isn’t fun. Nor is it challenging. It’s cheap, and bad game design. Being absurdly hard is perfectly acceptable, but trial-and-error gameplay is not.

I find it fun to puzzle through the levels, to do my best to avoid the traps by taking the less obvious path, and the immense satisfaction at the end when you’ve completed it.

That is fun.

What they should do…

IS SHORTEN WORLD 2 ZONE 2!
Seriouslly, it just kept going, and going, and going, and going and GOING AND GOING!

Doesn’t help you have to pace yourself to avoid all the insta-death darts!

60 lives used on Zone 2 alone…
No continue tokens, ended with 1 spare life.
If I had died then, well then I probably would have never tried it again because the thing took easily 2 hours just to get through!

That’s nice, but that doesn’t make ‘unfair’ fun. Fun is subjective as it is, and you do realize that I’m talking about tribulation mode, right?

I grew up with megaman 2, castlevania, and other games like it. Those games are tough, but fair. Tribulation mode is TRIAL AND ERROR. There’s nothing fair about it, it doesn’t take skill, just time.

kids these days just don’t know bad game design when they see it.

most of the challenge from the 8 bit era of games was from poor collision detection if i recall. i didn’t think the dev(s) of SAB one would reasonably find it necessary to put that level of authenticity into it. hell, the slingshot and whip never seem to work for me on the river parts with the turtles and alligators and whatnot. (i didn’t really get too far into zone 1 heh)

From what I understand from Josh is that the Tribulation Mode isn’t about fair. It’s unfair by design. It’s “cheap” by design. It’s overpowered against you, by design.

Then it’s bad design, nothing more needs to be said. it was advertised as something that would take at least some degree of skill, and yet instead it’s only something that requires you to purchase the first sign of pay2win in this game to proceed through it. I don’t know about anyone else, but I was expecting a challenge with a simple reward that could show that I completed that challenge, not complete and total bullkitten.

As I get it is that you are protecting TM as you should be and it should be “Impossible” that’s the thing about it but I think you get the complaits wrong no? The complaint isn’t for tribulation mode, it fis for Normal mode.

I tried world 1 in TM and almost made it before I thought ‘I have to take a break from dieing 100 times’ so i started World 2 since I have done World 1 in normal mode last time, I got to World 2 Zone 2 a few checkpoints in and I have used up more lives than I did in World 1 TM. Lucky I bought Infinte Continue coin becouse I prepared for TM.

World 1 TM I could learn what to do and what not to do, in World 2 Zone 2 Normal modes there is lag, there is iregular pillars, there is un-prepared knockbacks when you are “safe”, there is lag small almost unoticable lag spikes that makes you character jump like a kitten and so on.

I play TM I am prepared to be griefed with un-prepared knockbacks and iregular pillars without any safe spots, but c’mon this is Normal mode and I guess Josh didn’t plan to have his game on normal mode like Battle Toads?

I totally do NOT get the whining about Tribulation Mode. I mean, look at the name alone. Does that suggest moderately difficult to you?

Seriously, I thought this was what the hardcore gamers wanted – hard, challenging, unfair content that makes them work and use their skills.

Well the biggest issue I have with it is that it’s completely insane playing it without the infinite continue coin or without farming normal continue coins beforehand.

P2W or “preparing to have fun” seems to be the only two choices here :/

It probably is. I won’t touch it myself because I know it’s way beyond my abilities but I’m guessing the idea was to be a time sink full of trial and error trolling gameplay like IWTBTG and I suspect it’s no coincidence that an item showed up in the gem shop to make it easier…

IWBTG difficulty works because the game has no down time. You die? You respawn instantly 10s earlier at a checkpoint that are conveniently placed all over the place. This was specifically mentioned in Extra Credits (same remark for Super Meat Boy) when talking about difficulty done right.

I would have hoped that ANet game designers did watch those series before but it seems not :p

Granted though, it was posted two months ago or something.

They couldn’t dumb down tribulation mode more if they tried. Saying tribulation mode is good is just wrong. I pretty much agree with raahk an stof, and would basically just be repeating them.

Firstly, the subject of this thread “Don’t dumb it down” is rude, but you utilize words such as disproportionate in your opening statement. Not sure why a more appropriate subject was chosen. Immediately comes across as a troll/disrespectful post.

On topic to your remarks,

in this thread Josh stated this is a niche part of the game not designed for all of the players. This sums everything up nicely and of course majority of the complaints about difficulty did not find these remarks beforehand.

Difficulty is subjective to everyone, including what players find “fun”. I wouldn’t go as far as degrade players do to their frustrations because they enjoy different types of game style.

Thank you for finding the post I was thinking of… Now I can answer this one:

Unfair in every way isn’t fun. Nor is it challenging. It’s cheap, and bad game design. Being absurdly hard is perfectly acceptable, but trial-and-error gameplay is not.

From what I understand from Josh is that the Tribulation Mode isn’t about fair. It’s unfair by design. It’s “cheap” by design. It’s overpowered against you, by design.

Then it’s bad design, nothing more needs to be said. it was advertised as something that would take at least some degree of skill,

Acutally, it was advertised as being unfair and being “bad design”.

The thing that makes this approach tricky is that on its surface, it seems to be bad design because it is intrinsically unfair.

People who don’t ‘get’ this kind of game see it like the designer is trolling out of cruelty, and so they read malicious intent into the invisible insta-kills.
….
And the thing about how it is unfair: yes, it is.

Taken from the post Antara linked.

Don’t like it? Don’t play it.
