Mini map
Maybe add a quest log and out of combat regen too. You know, update the game mechanics to this millenium. On the other hand, that might be missing the point. Hmm, what to do…
Yeah, we removed the minimap for a reason. There are several factors that make 8 and 16 bit games feel the way they do. One of them is forcing the player to really learn their environment.

Not so much the environment, just finding my peeps that I was with.
Super Box environment is rather simple. If you add in more stuff later that is way more complicated than this, then I can see what you are saying.
The only thing that annoys me with the removal of the map, is that it removes the in-game clock for me. :P Would be interesting to know if something could be done about it.

You never played those old games back in the day did you?

Played games when the only way was to stand at a machine and keep feeding it quarters. My first home system was a Ti994a(I was a kid when we got this…age is showing) and have been playing them since. Yes, I did play those games.
Map wouldn’t kill the feel for me. The rest of the environment already sets that feel in nicely. I like the newer luxeries of maps.

You can press M to see the “world map” and get a rough idea of where your party members are if you get lost. Still, it’s awfully hard to tell a SAB newbie how to rejoin the group if they happened to die and have no idea where they are. XD
it’s the lack of all these things that really make this fun for me… It adds challenge in a way, no minimap means you really need to pay attention to where everyone is going or if you’re just joining someone would need to come back and guide you to the rest of the group. It’s especially important that there is no health regen, if there were i think i’d die a little inside.

Also, once you ave learnt the lay of the land so to speak it becomes easy, since party needs to gather at pre-defined places, such as Queen beedog, checkpoints, chests and bosses.

The only thing I genuinely miss from the minimap is the clock that told me the hour of day. I now actually have to alt-tab out of GW2 while playing SAB to make sure I’m not playing at like 3AM or something crazy.

I can understand this and agree that this is a solid decision. However, it would be nice to have some other way to find out where allies are when they are too far away to see their name or text bubbles. =)
lol just stick together

If finding your group is the issue I could see a sort of radar looking thing that only displays group members on it. So it would be black with a green circles that has your party on it as dots, like normal, but doesn’t show you anything about the world.
Would that be sufficient?

I understand the loss of the map for the old game feel. However, the big difference is that in older games you did not have a team of others who could venture off. If you did have a team they were confined to the same area, so you couldn’t lose them.
I was playing the other day and got separated from my team and took me awhile to find them again. A mini map would be great for that reason.

Possibility of a paper map at some point? Oldschool games didn’t have minimaps generally but there was always either a map included in the box or one in Nintendo Power around the time the game was released.
Honestly I wish I’d have kept them, in good condition they’d make cool wall art:)

True if you are talking only about consoles that had no network multiplayer.
OTOH you have DOS games like Doom and Descent which were exactly like this.

I don’t remember Doom being coop? Was it?
There was coop in Doom. Networked games at the time were VERY hardcore to get working with material few would have.
And even today it’s a blast to play it but far easier :p
I think it was Doom 2, I remember dialing into a buddies computer and I think you could either do deathmatch or coop.

Mine fell apart for Dragon Warrior. I laminated the one for Dragon Warrior 2 and it still fell apart.

Tunnels of Doom, Parsec, Chisholm Trail. Three games I tended to go back to a lot when I was allowed to play on it.
I also tried several times to play “King’s Quest” but at that age it just frustrated me too much.

Yeah, how am I supposed to know when I’m late for work because I’m doing my Super Adventure Box runs?
Seriously, can we have a clock somewhere else?
Make it old fashioned looking.
Doing the clock or a modified minimap was just too far down the totem pole of important code changes we had to make to the engine to get SAB the way we wanted. And there are still so many things we want to tweak and add for upcoming worlds. Not sure if we’ll get to this. While it’s true that in 8/16 bit games you didn’t usually have to worry about other players, the idea that learning the levels is what makes or breaks you is still preserved this way. Plus, you can see each other’s names through the terrain for quite a distance.
Please consider adding the clock, it is a huge deal for people that have limited playtime and don’t want to keep looking at Cellphone or Alt-tabbing out of the game to know what time is it…
Tarnished Coast
Please do not add a minimap. It takes away from the great sense of exploration.
Please to god don’t add a map. It would totally ruin the feel of the game.
I think a solution would be to just add the minimap, but have a completely black (white, transparent, etc, whatever works best) image as the area’s map. This way, the minimap won’t give you any information about the surrounding area, but you would still be able to see the clock and the direction in which your teammates are located.
