We need culling back
Personally, I love the removal of culling. The game now feels like a real world that breathes life into it. For the cost of little FPS drop I like the fact that I can see all the npcs in towns and all players as they should be.
I wouldn’t like it if I roamed alone in ghost towns and only see running nameplates around.
Now on a side note, for Anet to cater to both parties is just impossible. I don’t want to be rude but this is the PC industry. If you want to play the new games you must dish out money (if not a lot, a little) to upgrade your PC and enjoy your game to the fullest. Everyone knows this, even the system requirements stated that they will change after release and might make you upgrade your computer.
I also understand people who are upset with buying the game thinking it would run fine and after this patch they can’t do anything about it anymore and cry for culling to be brought back so they can be happy again. But I disagree to some extent. Why would you want culling to be brought back if the same amount of people (I don’t have facts but the coin has two sides) are actually enjoying it or other people (who have stated in previous comments) either don’t have problems or have better performance. I am not trying to offend anyone here, I’m just answering to the name of the topic’s title. Of course I understand that people want an optimized option that controls the level of culling.
So what does it mean? It solely depends on YOUR pc’s capabilities.
Now there are 4 ways of TRYING to solve it:
-close other background applications
-lower graphic options/culling slider
-wait for a possible patch/fix
-upgrade PC (last resort but even then it’s not a definite solution)
So in the end this is the PC gaming industry. It has always been like this. It’s a trial and error thing if I might add. Personally I am kind of tired of people trying to expect a 2012 game to run perfect on a fairly old computer (3 to 5 years) New tech comes every year and raises the bar. The best safe option? Buy a console and be done with it for years to come. if you want to play an mmo? Deal with this^.
tl;dr When something doesn’t work for you, don’t blame others. Try and find the best and optimal solution for YOU because IT’S ALWAYS THERE. It just needs to be found.
PS: By no means have I meant to offend anybody. Be it the low-end PC gamers or someone else. If anyone finds something in my post that offends him then I’m sorry for doing so.
Now on a side note, for Anet to cater to both parties is just impossible.
With regard to the whole culling thing, of course it’s possible. That’s why they put in controls. Turning player nametags off and chosing a system-appropriate value on the Character Model Limit setting should allow people to tune the game to run smoothly on their machine. Compared to how it was with culling, this should be great for everyone.
Low-end machines can run with the lowest setting, and have the game perform just like it used to when there was still culling. High-end machines can run with the highest setting and display everything in glorious detail. Anything in between can run with a setting somewhere in between. Everyone can be happy.
Only, it doesn’t work right. Every character model not rendered now displays its nametag regardless of the nametags settings, resulting in people running with a low Character Model Limit having their screens flooded with hundreds of nametags, rendering the game ugly and unplayable.
If the nametags settings were respected for unrendered models, all would be well.
Now on a side note, for Anet to cater to both parties is just impossible.
Actually, the settings normally do work to allow both groups to get the balance of speed and quality that they prefer. There seems to be a relatively small group who is experiencing decreased performance even when using decreased quality, regardless of whether they are using low-end or high-end hardware. We can’t really say why that is happening, maybe it’s a bug, maybe it’s their configuration.
In any case, your statement and the lengthy post it was attached to are false.
-split WvW and PvE culling settings. For wvw i might want to have maximum possible FPS, thus sacrificing graphics. In PvE i might prefer to see more fancy and shiny stuff. Re-doing all the setting everytime hopping in and out of wvw is incredibly annoying.
I like this idea. Doing WvW I would be willing to drop the graphics to the bare minimum to get the best performance but in PvE I don’t mind a drop in frames to make things look better.
2 things:

-wasn’t culling a client-side thing? Well, put a check box for “enable – disable culling” – for pve manly. My pc is bad, but i preferred 1000 times seeing only a part of ppl but decently, rather then seeing now a crowd of stickmans (of a horrible pink color, btw).
Inb4 “buy a new rig or GPU” : not everybody is lucky enough to do so. And i played the game fine for 1 year, seeing things changed this way with no option even to keep old settings is incredibly annoying – as long as it’s a client side thing as they always said…
Here’s what’s odd – both for your complaint and the people who are snarking about “buy a new rig”… I have 32GB RAM, 3.6 Ghz 8-core processor and a 1GB nVidia graphics card… not the greatest setup, but not a slouch, either.
When they removed culling, my game performance actually INCREASED. That shouldn’t have happened, logically… less items should have been better, but just the opposite occurred.
I don’t think “new rig” is relevant or helpful, and that something else is interacting for those who are getting decreased performance – OS settings, BIOS, etc.
My only issue is that now I will see other people BEFORE I see enemies and in the invasion events, I often see a bunch of players all dressed alike blasting and attacking thin air or enemy models standing completely still.
Outside of massive zerg events, it’s perfectly fine. In fact, I put my settings up higher and didn’t have a lick of lag. Culling for zerg-y events might be nice though…
INb4 BUY A NEW COMP, SCRUB. If you have $500 to throw about, great – give it to me.

i5 3570k 4.1GHz and a GTX 650 ti. <— that is the hardware i run. not really high end stuff. basically mid-range, and i run everything ultra, with SMAA injectors, and the culling and character textures set to high. I play fine. better than ever. the cities feel alive, and i love it. If you have fps issues, just turn the settings down. not everybody is having those problems, and you either need to upgrade, or just learn that not everything can be sparkly on a lower tier system.

ITT, people complain about something everyone’s been asking for all year, when they have the option to disable it.
Oh internet, never change.
As Captain Planet used to day, “The Power is yours!” Culling wasn’t removed per say, it simply became user adjustable. This way I can max out my experience since I built a new rig. But, a friend who plays on her laptop can scale it down.

the funny thing…
by any logical means lowering graphical options should make game running smoothier – in example lowering numbers on model’s that are fully rendered should make fps higher. and setting this higher, should lower fps
funny thing… when I changed that setting from “lowest” to “low” I’ve noticed increasing of fps.
Interesting what happen If I change it to yet higher settings

discussion about offensive/deffensive playstyles
There is a massive I mean MASSIVE difference between WvW and PvE for culling, you turn if on in WvW you are dead before you even see what hit you, in PvE you turn it off and you lag out so badly some people crash,
I have a fairly decent system, i7 3770k, 16Gb ram, SSD, 680GTX, and I still get lag issues with full culling turned off, I would really really love to know what super computer the Anet team have for testing with, its got to be something that could power a small city.

This is having a negative effect on PVE frame rates. Even when I make the recommended adjustments the game has graphic lag and does not look as good, bad idea. I really do not understand the point of fixing something that was not broken to the point where it is now broken. As a long time MMO player though I have seen this kind of thing before … sigh.
Actually, rather than reversing the removal of culling, how about giving us the option to get rid of particle effects. I mean totally get rid of them. I still see fields of white and an enemy name tag somewhere in the whiteout during invasion events. Nothin in the world is so ugly as that. It is absolutely not useful, and it eats up my fps.

Weird. you have slightly better specs than me and i run everything on ultra completely without culling and have literally zero fps issues.
