I got side tracked and leveled a thief to 80 and now back on my elementalist. With that said, is it possible to get 100 % map completion with staff solo ? If so, care to share your tricks and build with a rookie ?

It’s very much possible, in fact, I do just about everything on my staff ele including 1v1 duelling.

As for the tips for rookies, you can’t really go wrong with using an elite Earth Elemental for the tough bits. Not only does it attract aggro like a champ, but it can take a beating that would make other players jealous. That’ll give you the time to either cap skill points or beat enemies.

Another trick I personally use a lot, is run into a group of enemies with Armor of Earth and Magnetic Aura active, and cast Meteor Shower at my own location. Especially when followed by some other AoE skills, you can quickly clear out a group of foes without taking too much damage yourself. If you swap attunements while performing this trick, you will also get extra might from Sigil of Battle and fury from Arcane Fury, which will further empower your meteor shower.

The common belief that staff is rubbish is false, though it’s not always easy to play. But there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to do well with it in PvE. It’s main issues lie in PvP after all.

Well that’s good to know. You said it’s good in 1 v 1 dueling so I’m assuming you come across this in wvw. This is perfect for me since all I play basically is pve and wvw when soloing.

Another tip: Staff Ele’s have some of the best kiting tools in the game. Chain together Water 4 to chill > Earth 4 to block > Earth 5 to immobilize > (optionally, throw Earth 2 down) > Air 5 to immobilize again (on top of Earth 2 for the Swiftness from the Blast Finisher) > Fire 4 for distance. Bonus points for blocking/immobilizing in your chill field to really stack the duration. Anything that keeps up with you through that almost deserves to kill you. ; )

Also, you can throw in several utilities to keep the pressure off at critical times. Things like Signet of Earth (extra Toughness is nice, but the immobilize is fantastic at keeping stuff in your AoEs), Lightning Flash (try casting Meteor Shower at max range, then use Lightning Flash mid-cast to get even more distance between you and whatever you are killing), Arcane Wave (instant cast Blast Finisher on a 30 second cooldown – oh the possibilities!), Mist Form (stun break + 3 sec invulnerability), Arcane Shield (stun break + blocks next three attacks)… I could keep going but I think you get the point.

Oh, and I totally agree with ThiBash about Ele’s in general and Staff Ele’s in particular. The truth is very different than the commonly held beliefs (at least on these forums).

Really I’m just an intermediate Ele but I have 100% map and did the majority of it with staff (the rest of it I used d/d or s/d but not because it wasn’t possible with staff, I just enjoy using those weapons too)

I think my build is 0 10 10 20 30, using a mixture of Knight’s and Zerker gear, Scholar Runes, Sigil of Energy and/or Battle. Frost Bow is great for the #4 aoe, combined with Meteor Shower it drops stuff really fast.

Earth Elemental Elite is awesome, just throw a couple of heals on it and it will tank anything no problem.

Mist form lasts long enough to open chests.

I do everything on my 30/20/0/0/20 zero toughness/vit staff ele. I have no problems in PvE (except with the mega huge champion boss monsters, since they always 1-shot me). It’s a very versatile weapon.

You’re welcome. I’d like to state though, for the record, that staff is not good for 1v1 duelling…I just said that I use it for that too. If you want to have an easier time duelling other players, I’d recommend using another weapon. But you can duel with staff should you really want/need to.

Cool, thanks for all the feed back. Staff and D/D are my favorite weapons for this profession so I’m sure ( Later on ) I’ll return with a D/D rookie thread question.
