4th Utility Vs Elite
Incinerary: 80 Elementalist S/d Glass 0/30/0/20/20 D/d Bunker 0/20/0/20/30
The elite glyph is my swiss army knife (the elementals can do a lot) and I would still use it if I could bring a utility instead.
The problem is that anet isn’t yet at the point of adding new skills to the game, and our current elites are such kitten there’s no point in buffing them because they’ll still be terrible.
If you’re human, I run avatar of melandru. It’s actually pretty good. You can use it just like a mistform stomp, and then you have a few abilities open to you afterwards such as condition clearing, a water field, or entangling roots.

Depending on the scenario, I would still use FGS, the elemental, and even tornado (to max meteor damage). However, it would be nice if I could use other utilities in that slot, for those cases where the above three are not useful.
I wouldn’t replace my fgs elite for a 4th utility slot. FGS is way too great for me as a solo and small group roamer in wvw.
Sorry, I like my FGS too much

We need an elite that changes the tide of battle. Not just one that’s good for running away, since we need to run away a lot because the class is so underpowered. that’s our elite skill, running away. Yay! No, we need an elite that nukes the hell out of the enemy and makes them regret ever attacking us. Something powerful that completely shifts the battle in our favor, like Moa Morph, or Supply Drop. THOSE are elite skills. I drag a Mesmer friend with me and force them to use moa. Anyone is an easy kill as a moa, even the annoying warriors that are immune to everything with insane burst damage and tanky enough to survive my burst that one shots any other class and regen back to full before all my cooldowns are up and I can burst again. Well guess what? You aren’t immune to everything and don’t keep your 1000+ hps regen as a moa.
I want an elite glyph of storms that lasts for 30 seconds and the air attunement would do an unblockable AoE stun every 6 seconds. And no, that’s not the least bit overpowered. It would be an ELITE skill. warrior can AoE stun for 6 seconds every 8 seconds, and theirs isn’t even an elite. Fire attunement would drop meteors that would burn the opponent doing ticks of atleast 800 per second (combustive shot on warrior can tick at 1200, mine does atleast). Earth would be a daze and a blind with every pulse, water would cause 10 stacks of vulnerability with every hit and also inflict 10s of chill with every hit. Until they give us something like that, i’d rather be able to take an extra utility skill.

From my experience FGS is an elite that changes the tide of battles I’m in whether that is 1v1, 1v2, 2v2 etc. It is not only good for running away but it is also great in combat. I won’t argue that Moa (personally consider this one a very cheap low lvl skill that gets me so mad whenever a mesmer cast this on me on 1v1 lol) and supply drop are very good elites but I consider fgs to be better. The only thing that would make FGS way better is if it can be cast while moving.

Judging from that post, I’d say you have no idea what the elemental summons do. Through your elite, you get an ally that can cast ice fields, heal you, cripple+weaken the target, or spam a ranged stun every 10 seconds. That’s pretty powerful. Just don’t use the fire elemental, because it does the least of all summons.
ThiBash.5634,
Slavery is great for economic strength. If we ignore all the other slavery factors, then we can say it’s the perfect plan for national wealth. Umm, then again, maybe not.
So … not ignoring other factors, I totally agree with the OP. Elites should be so good that the player opts to take it. I mean, how good is the design if players must be forced to take an “Elite” skill, or get nothing.
The elemental would be great if you could actually control it’s aoe skill the way necros can control their minions. But you can’t, so it often goes wasted.
I’m personally in favor of OP. All ele elites are high cd abilities. I’d love to swap in something weaker but with frequent use for.
I personally run fgs. Although, conjures as a whole limit our skill pool to 5+ utilities instead of 20+ utilities. Conjures in general are counter to the whole dynamic design of an elementalist and the pure versatility we are known for… The conjure is decent but the cooldown is so high that it is only viable one out of every 10 fights.

They really, really need to let us cast FGS on the move.

I would take 4th elite over any Ele elite. Actullay i made this suggestion months ago.

judging from that post I’d say that you’ve never done competetive PvP.
Everyone can own scrubs in WvW, regardless of which 4th utility you choose. The problem with elites however is mostly a PvP problem. Every good player will fokus the elemental and kill it in 2-3s (or it dies even faster in AoE), in the time you’ve summoned your GS you will be dead and tornado is lika a big, huge “please hit-me I’m freekill”-sign on your back. (By the way fire elemental is the only really usefull one) Normal utilities at least offer some usefull things to PvP that can help you, therefore I’d also support the idea (not to remove elites, but to add the option to chose normal utilites in your elite-slot).

Is Tornado that bad? you gain Vitality CC and Stability. Seems decent to me.
On my ele? kitten no, all our elites are pretty boss in some way shape or form, on my Mesmer or ranger? Yes, yes I would.
As their mother, I have to grant them their wish. – Forever Fyonna
I hate our elites, except for running away. Whenever I play warrior, it’s so awesome being able to use an elite every 60 seconds (48 traited), and have it provide almost perma fury, swiftness, and 5 stacks of might. When I play ele, I’m always so worried about wasting the kitten things because they all have ridiculous cooldowns. At least give us one low cd option that allows us to have a consistent level of power in all confrontations.

Unless it’s been fixed, even a single stack of confusion will come close to an instant-kill against someone who’s using Tornado.

Okay then. Just wondering, does the same apply to Thief Daggerstorm?

Daggerstorm is a single channel, confusion will tick once for the entire ability. Retal on the otherhand would destroy a thief using Daggerstorm. Daggerstorm is incredibly good paired with Signet of Malice though, it’s basically a full heal.
Unfortunately, the issue with things like Daggerstorm, Tornado, Rampage, and other transformations is this: Boon stripping completely trivializes dealing with them since they can be CCed (in the case of the thief, one cc will cancel the entire ability) and they can’t heal or use utilities while transformed.

FGS may turn the tide in a battle against 2 people, but in a battle of 5+, its only use is to escape when things go south. Tornado is decent on choke points when you can knock people off but you have to basically use it, drop it and get the hell out or else you will be focused down. Elemental is ok for air elemental daze but its random, and still not that great for group play. Yeah, I’d take a 4th utility instead of what we have with the option to swap it out for FGS if the elite slot is not on cooldown.

Do you mean in 1v5 battle? if it is 5v5 encounter it absolutely turns the tide of the battle in favor of my team. It happened so many times when I group roam. This elite is the best.
I’d take another regular utility any day of the week. I’d love to, if even for fun, do all of the regular glyphs, signets, or weapons. That said, cantrips would be nice. FGS can be fun, as can elementals, but I do find myself wishing I had that forth regular one as the previously-mentioned elites aren’t OMGSAUCE, WATCH OUT, HERE I COME.
