Q:
Alt Class After Elementalist?
My main is an Ele so I don’t need an alt. =p
Every other class feels boring to play once you learn how to play Ele. If I were in your shoes, though. I’d consider trying a Guardian, maybe. Guardians can do a decent job “tanking” in PvE, which will let your friend do full damage with her Ele without having to worry too much about kiting. Guardian also provides really solid support and cc for PvP, which combos well with a more glassy Ele.
For WvW, honestly 2 Eles combo really well together, because they can engage much larger groups and both escape together. Ele and Thief can pair well together for the same reason. Thief also complements Ele well, because Ele has a lot of survivability, groupo buffs and cc, while Thief has very high burst output.
Long story short, I’d just stick with the Ele. But if you HAVE to roll another class, I’d go Thief or Guardian.
The closest in playstyle would be an Engineer.
Just remember to use quality superglue for sticking Grenade Kit to your bar.
i agree with mouse.
Ive been playing ele a long time and im actually having a lot of fun with the thief which im currently leveling and pvping on. after playing an ele everything feels slow compared to it. Thief is the only thing that comes close but can be VERY weird because the melee range is so small, but once you get used to it the class is great fun.
Just dont play ranger got it to 60 and just dropped it, all you do is autohit and your pet tanks everything.
I struggled with this too after my main (ele) reached 80 and I wanted to try another class. Got a guardian to 30 and liked it (plan to go back to her) …. And then tried a Mesmer and almost gave up on her because early on they’re tough … But at about level 20 a lightbulb went on and now I LOVE my Mesmer …. So, for me at least, my second is a Mesmer … Have zero difficulty soloing, and incredibly useful for wvw.
I’ve got a few alts, Ranger, Mesmer, Guardian, and Thief.
Left being my favorite and right being my least (not including elementalist ofcourse), I hardly play PvP, and find all of these rather fun for PvE, although I feel my Mesmer ‘feels’ sort of weak, I still enjoy it quite a bit. (I use the staff as Mesmer mostly, use greatsword a little as a second.)
Oh, and as Ranger, I always have a shortbow, and swap between greatsword and duel axes as a second, and pretty much always have my pet set to “Avoid Combat” and tell it when I want it to attack with F1, or return with F3 before or after it pulls the enemy.

Well my friend decided to go Ranger now instead so should I stick to my Ele?
I’ve done a lot of that character but thought I might start again on an alt so we can both experience the beginning again etc…
I thought Mesmer + Ranger would be good, I find the solider classes a little boring so I’m not interested in Warrior or Guardian, they seem rather easy.
Just a few days ago I finally managed to get my 2nd level 80 (My Ele being my first) and it was a mesmer, I will agree with an earlier poster though, they can be pretty difficult early on.
@MrsAngelD: I did the exact opposite [80 Mesmer, then 80 Ele.] – I’d have to say both have a tricky learning curve. Both are hella fun, though, and can be outright brutal.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
Right now I have a level 80 Mesmer, a level 80 Engineer and a level 80 Guardian alts.
I play my Guardian in PvE because she can carry bad groups like no other profession will ever do (and it’s fun to play to me as Hammer-Altuistic Healing).
My grenadier Engineer is a mobile WvW siege machine, whenever my home server is outmanned and on the defensive I log him, hop into EB, pop Elixir U/B and watch people blow up.
I love playing them both, not as much as my Elementalist, because they share some of the things I love about my main: one has powerfull group utilies, is very resilient and can produce a lot of combos (Guardian) while the other is incredibly fun to play due to it’s mechanics depth.
P.S. My Mesmer is shelved because it is a powerfull and fun profession but after getting him in full exotic gear and playing him in various aspects of the game I understood something: he’s not stronger, but quicker, easier and more seductive.
Mesmer.
I have played mesmer since beta 1 and now after the nerf rain over the class i wanted to try out a new one, tried them all and the only one i felt satisfied was with an elementalist, so it might go both ways
I’ve recently started wrecking havoc with my Necro in PvP, thanks to a bombing build I came across.
I hear Necro’s are amazing in PVE is that true.
Either way it is now Mesmer VS Necromancer.
I’m undecided.
Any suggestions? Need to decide by tonight.
Necro has more power and survivability but them Mesmer could Buff my friend and also has decent survivability.
I’d suggest Thief because the play style is quite different at least in my experience but you’re still very useful. I have to respec sometimes for dungeons on my Thief, and I’m plenty useful in WvW. I’ve played one for most of my time, but after playing an Elementalist in the right way, I can’t go back to any other classes. Stick with your Elementalist in my opinion, you can literally do anything haha.

THIEF best
guardian second best
The only three classes I can ever recommend (unless they have something specific they’re looking for) are ele, thief, and guardian. in that order
Anyway thief has great mobility and surprisingly awesome versatility. You can basically do whatever you want. in any sense

Thief was on the top of my list before I realized that their only reliable AOE is Cluster Bomb. Seeing as AOE is normally necessary in PvE, I didn’t go with it. I’m probably wrong though which would be good.
Guardian I loved at one point in the game, when I first started. Then I just got bored of the ‘LOLspinandalldead’ BS. I did like using staff though, which I know wasn’t the best choice but it was enjoyable to see all those stacks of might land on everyone.
Right now I’m running on my Lvl 26 Necro but feeling a bit mehh..
I’ve tried a few
- Warrior —> Got bored after 20 levels
- Ranger —> Got bored after 4 levels
- Necromancer —> Only done 2 levels, but seems kind of ok, just too many pets
- Mesmer —> Looks promising, but only done 4 levels
In conclusion: Most classes look a bit bland after playing an elementalist, so I only tried the above..

Thief certainly does have AoE. Death blossom and caltrops are AoE if you want condition damage, and sword’s basic attack and pistol whip are AoE if you want direct damage. Cluster bomb is their only ranged AoE. not counting trick shot’s double bounce. I almost never used a bow on my thief and had no problems killing lots of mobs simultaneously.
im coming from mesmer 80 to ele, and i thought mesmer was active… ele is WAY more active
it was the only class i didnt have, i had to buy another slot to make one… i was never a typical elemental type mage player
but the class is so ACTIVE that im having a blast
i havent played anything else that feels as active
most classes, how i set them up, feel like i click everything in an order to set up for some big burst, or big SOMEthing… ele is just non stop medium somethings… but… nonstop!
its the only class where i dont consider #1 attack to be useful… ok the scepter bleeds n burns are pretty good, and the staff water heal+dmg is kinda neat.. but thats it!
i think the next most active is the mesmer, but it IS a pita until u get going in levels
