How to Condi Reaper on a budget
Everything I say is only in reference to PvE and WvW.
It does push group support a bit more though. Ele already has practically everything, that’s why you can’t expect anything new. They have amazing close range dps, mid range with scepter, and long range with staff. They have invulns, condi clear, conditions, boons.
What more can you expect? Stealth? That would just be silly.
By that definition all classes have everything… Engi has all that + stealth, warrior has all that, mesmer has all that and stealth…. (except maybe thief missing viable range single target dps thief is prob the most specialized gw2 class) etc
This is gw2, classes are meant to have builds and lots of options. Ele doesn’t somehow have more than anyone else. They just have a popular cele build in pvp. That has nothing to do with having more than anyone else though.
This… isn’t exactly true. At least, it’s misleading. All professions have a large number of effects tucked across their weapons, utility skills, traits, and profession mechanics. I haven’t run the numbers but it’s probably true that all the professions have a comparable number of effects available to them, albeit in different proportions. However, Eles have almost unparalleled access to these effects from one moment to the next. In other words, a given Ele build will tend to have more options available to it without switching traits or weapon sets than most other profession’s builds (with the notable possible exception of kit Engineers).
It’s out biggest single strength, and it’s why we have both the lowest base defenses and no true weapon swap. This is also why the Tempest is going to be so difficult to balance: because giving up access to those options for any length of time is equivalent to sacrificing our biggest strength, which means Overloads need to be absurdly powerful to be worth using.
Honestly, if Tempest water and air weren’t so bleh. I would love to. Doesn’t help that the traits are completely ununified.
I think its “tempest line” more aimed on what you want out of the tempest class. If you go overload doing added effect aimed then you can build the line that way if you want to go more self def you can build that way too. The last line of GM only has 2 def tool one aura and one overload the 3ed is pure WH off hand. The aura def tool my be the best for non wh tempest and the overload aimed one may be better for “light tempest” aimed builds where your just using overload as a get out tool that i can see good for staff builds.
Aura support i think is going to be 3, 3or2, 3. Boon / wh tempest its going to be 1or 2, 1 or 2, 1. For s/wh tempest the dmg version i think its going to be 1, or 2, 2, 3. For staff dmg tempest its going to be 1, 2, 2. A fun d/d dmg tempest i think 2, 1, 3 but that going to need some testing.
This is what i have in mind for support aura d/d ele you could use a staff if you want and the frost aura shout can be fire or earth if you want. For me i like going down air for more dmg / support if fire blinding ash was icd per person i would go fire over air but sadly its per burn abitly. You could go arcain and if you did its best to give up the cdr on overloads for strong self protection as you will have perma protection on.
I wouldn’t mind taking overload traits but unless every attunement overload gets a stability bar, there’s no point.
I sure know I’m not. Doesn’t change gameplay at all, just turns d/d into d/w and illusions people into thinking this is the first melee ele that can play seriously. News flash boys, d/d has been here for three years, it’s been fantastic at front lining, and the tempest doesn’t do a thing differently than what it offers.
I honestly cant wait untill playing tempest! I will play aura master build!
I see only aura master or shout hybids might be intresting/useful. when trying to build an overload master you are lost ….
Going with a support spec for tempest was a good idea from arenanet. Making it frontline however was a really bad idea….
Main problem is that the weapon, overloads and shouts make the spec a frontline melee class which they are not suited for in many game modes. Add to this that the traitline is quite underwhelming as well and doesn’t offer any extra real damage mitigation and focuses too much on overload and warhorn usage, making it almost absolute for any other weapon use.
Haven’t tested tempest in pvp yet, but I can imagine that D/D meta is still more viable. D/D in general has more mobility, more survivability by using cantrips without the worry of overloading and locking you out of an attunement.
In PvE anything can work, and when people enjoy tempest with warhorn I’d say play it. But that doesn’t take away the fact that tempest is less viable over the normal elementalist in PvP and WvW.
Right now the only “possible” build I could think of for WvW is this: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vFAQFAWnMMAdOgVOA+XCsSglTAz9rWWbrETgAwCooEMA/AA-TFSBAB0s/QWK9OTJIlq/clyA80BoxDAAgLAApA0TZE-w
Gale Song: Reliable stun breaker with not a bad cooldown at all. Seems more reliable over tempest defense. It basically provides an immediate stun breaker when you’re stunned or whatever, and because of the trait tempestous aria it should give weakness to someone near you. So can work nicely against thiefs or warriors and such trying to spike you.
Then in grandmaster the only trait that can be somewhat useful is lucid singularity. Can use overload in fire before a fight to get some quick might. Or after using #5 in water you can get an extra heal by overloading water. But that’s about it…
Using a shout skill instead of icebow. Fire shout can be used quite often and does “some” damage. Again somewhat useful incase you’re spiked or targeted.
All in all, not worth it, and better of going with fire or earth traitline over tempest IMO.

Being melee or ranges is nothing new to ele becuse ele could do both already but bigger boon support aoe stun braking and more auras is going to be a new way to play vs ele much shorter ranges lack of aoe stab/stun braking and very limited aura support. In a lot of ways reaper melee is nothing new for necro becuse necro had melee from (near melee) axe and (comply melee) dagger main hand. You can say this for all the elite spec that they do not bring any thing that new to the class in ideal of melee vs ranges.
Tempest build seem to somewhat work with condition elementalist since most build stick with one attunement 90% of the time but only to switch for defensive purpose. Only problem is fire is currently the strong condition build and earth is very underwhelming so getting lock out of fire is really bad. If bleeding damage could get some love then it could allow for some interesting rotation for condition builds. Assuming the offhand is airhorn: One can either start with fire or earth depending on if certain abilities or overload effects is desirable at the start of a fight. Water can be used for burst healing then overload it for more heal. Meanwhile air seems to provide interesting CC.

How does tempest have potential for a condition build when it provides no access to new cover conditions for the elementalist? Your burn stack can get cleansed very easily, which negates almost all of your damage. The lack of cover conditions would still be a problem even with better bleeding.
Elementalists really need to get a condition focused elite spec at some point. It’s so obvious that I don’t know why it wasn’t our first.

I should of state the build as PvE which condition being cleanse is quite rare and not a problem since current condition builds can stack burn quite fast but bleed is very kitten slow. I agrees that elementalist need a condition elite spec like offhand torch which could provide huge burn damage in exchange for a lost of mobility (Dagger), defense (Focus), and support (Warhorn). Still I want to see some ways for earth to have some form of burst bleed with utilities.

Well, the Tempest doesn’t help you very much for PvE Condi either :L
Only the Fire Overload(the 180 range one…) has any damaging conditions while the Warhorn only has 1 spell with a damaging condition AND only Feel the Burn does any damaging Conditions(and it’s pretty weak). Then the line itself has like, no Conditions or way to increase their damage either.
Yeah man I really can’t wait to play objectively inferior versions of builds that already exist. /s
I will try it with condi ele. But yes puting a cover condition, one that even damages like confusion into minor traitline would greatly help.
To tempest i need space in my utilities. I have to trait fire + earth and need speed + condition removal which forces me to use two utility slots for air sigil + cleansing flame (the third slot varies and is usually a stunbreaker). So i end up with no room for shouts , unusable overloads and no aura share option. So i better go with one of the basic traitlines like water or arcane …..
To play it in small group combat i would need baseline speed, a condi remover and a bit boon on bleeding. Think nothing of that would make temest to strong but help in building. The easiest and a reason to take tempest woul be to make speedy conduit a permanent 33% movement. Thus permaswiftness not a boon on overload. Not OP but a tempting and unique feature.
