Any Staff WvW builds that....
Slot in fiery greatsword and use it if you are ganged. Before using it though, remember to use all your cc skills to slow the enemy down and get additional space with Burning Retreat.
I pretty much never die as a Staff Ele when traveling around.
Would agree with the above poster, and suggest putting cantrips (Lightning Flash and Mist Form in particular, imo) into your skill slots if you are running by yourself (ex, trying to catch up to zerg from spawn) Both of those have gotten me out of bad situations while running alone. Sigil of Air is also nice just for the passive speed increase if you’re just running, since you can easily switch it out once you reach your destination.

air 5, water 4, earth 4, fire 4, lightning flash, mist form… plenty of escape tools there alone if you use fgs your 3 & 4 are also escape tools… you should be impossible to catch

Maybe scepter/dagger would be a good middle ground. Just not much aoe out of that build for the zerg and tagging folks (outside of fire 3)
Scepter/Dagger isn’t for big fights.

As suggested by others, usr your escape cantrips and Sigil of Air and FGS. You’ll be fine.
30 in water gives you a lot of Condi cleanses which help if you’re being chased and just want to run away. Ele has so many cleanses and access to swiftness and invulnerablility, it is rare to not be able to get away.
As for a build, I run 30 water, 30 arcane, and the last 10 is preference really. I run 10 in air for reduced glyph recharge because I use the glyph heal. I use all zerker armor and trinkets, aside from chest and legs which are knights, but many eles go full zerker. My utilities in a zerg fight are the cantrip for Condi cleanse (forgot the name), mist form, armor of earth, and tornado. Using tornado immediately after casting meteor shower can give you 8k+ meteor showers.

nobody should ever catch you if your doing it right.
With my ele more than any other class, I change my 789 slots on the fly. For travelling safely or entering contested towers, lightning flash, arcane shield, and mist form. (Mix in CCs to thwart pursuit if not immediately entering a tower.)
I also have 10 in earth and aracana for the III skill in each line, which gives me a free Armor of Earth and a free Arcane Shield. Those are, of course, excellent in combat as well as when travelling.

if you’re a norn and don’t want to pull the ole “nado’ shower” you could slot snow leopard as your elite, it’s a get-out-of-jail-free card, the stealth lets you slip away and the charge will get you so far away from the zerg that you might end up out of render range XD
i even sacrifice my necros flesh golem for snow leopard sometimes when i need to go from A to B in wvw and there are zergs around.
