Depends on what kind of advice you want…
We could get into lengthy explanations about the importance of a proper rotation, the role of the ele in the current pvp/wvw/PvE meta, the different types of builds and their uses, the main differences between an ele and another profession, etc.
Asking for advice without any indication on your experience, game mechanics and game type you enjoy is like asking to explain physics without guidelines… Long and painful for everyone.
If personally be glad to help as much as I can but I’d like a bit more information about what sort of advice you want, is it your first gw2 character? Is it lvl 80 yet? Do you want to do pvp wvw dungeons fractal?

The main difference with ele, is their use of Attunments (air, water, fire and earth), where each has a specific purpose, fire provide you with heavy dps, water has some CC but mostly heals, air is CC and DPS while Earth provide conditions, some sustain skills and damage. (keep in mind it may vary depending on weapon)
Because ele has access to 20 skills per weapons, they have no weapon swap to change too, meaning their weapons skills are fairly linear (a dagger ele will only fight close range (one skill is mid range I think) scepter will fight mid range and staff has long range abilities)
Ele is a class that has a lot of Field and Blast (a few leap also), and auras.
I think (I am not sure) that ele is the only class that has skills that directly apply an aura and, with all of their weapons combined, as access to all of the elemental one (not chaos, light or anything)

As for the weapons
Staff gives you access to 1200 range on almost (if not all) of your skills, many aoe, Heavy-DPS, heal and CC.
The builds relying on staff will usually need you to go full burst, they are not as rewarding as Scepter-based or D/D, but can do terrible damage to the other team if you do it properly.

Scepter is mainly used because of the synergy of the air trait line and fresh air build.
It’s a burst either used with a dagger for more damage and access to an heal, or focus, for invulnerability, clear condition and, overall, a more defensive setup.
Make no mistake, Fresh Air is almost pure burst that needs very precise timing and a good control of your fingers. I am not familiar with scepter, so I may have left out a bit

Dagger can be used as a main-hand with focus or another dagger or off-hand with scepter.
A dagger based build is a close-ranged one, either combined with focus (as I did for a kittenized fresh air build that didn’t work SO well) or with a dagger, that provides you with a in-your-face sort of style. You have the mobility to chase, but also the type of skills that makes you jump everywhere.
A D/D triple cantrip gives you access to around 15 clear conditions on a 60 second cooldown (between 9 and 60sec, in fact), which helps a lot to mitigate the conditions damage.

Focus is an off-hand weapon that provides nice CC and defense oriented skills (an aura, a reflect that removes 3 condi, a invulnerability skill, etc)

Right now ele is in a really good place overall,
In WvW they can provide nice addition to a zerg with staff which provides nice water fields, healing and CC
As a roamer you have enough mobility and damage potential to do fairly well.

Ele in PvP is in an excellent position with the D/D cele meta build.
Ele overall is a class that revolves around the word “versatility”.
It is a Jack-of-all-trade class where you need to rotate between elements, because your CDs are quite high and you will not be able to make the ele shine as well if you stay in one attunment.
An ele does not have a lot of health, nor a lot of armor, and in low levels it is a merciless class where you may die often.
It gets easier as you level up and unlock traits, however, especially the water and arcanae which are almost mandatory to survive in PvP/WvW

Elementalist is a profession where you absolutely need to move around while casting.
Kiting is essential for our survival, but it is a fun class to play and master.
There’s a few rotations you’ll need to learn and I’d suggest to watch good ele players (such as phantaram) to give yourself a look at what the class can look like.

Learn to attunement-hop. You have 4 times as many weapon skills as anyone else, and you need to master them all to play to the character’s potential.

While there are 4 times the weapon skills, nearly half are filler, so part of learning Ele is learning which skills are decent and which are never worth casting.

More, because you can weapon hop as well due to how casting works, which I think is amazing game design.

Don’t listen to this guy. Seriously, this is flat out wrong. Looking at just staff, only ice spike and lightning surge are not really useful (although pretty OK if you happen to lock yourself out of your desired attunement), all other skills are amazing when used properly. That’s 2 skills out of 20.

Don’t listen to this guy, he’s a flat-out PVE-runner. You can successfully complete any PVE encounter in the game using the worst skills in the game, so that makes them all useful right?

Watch any highly-rated Ele, they only use 1-2 skills from each attunement before switching. Most will only use half their available skills in any given match. There’s a reason for that, it’s because the other skills aren’t worth the opportunity cost of casting them, aka they’re not worth casting.

Even in PvE, staff water auto and earth auto are garbage.
