Arcane Wave..bugged?
Drake breath also does 1539 burn dmg and 292 regular dmg. Seems very high for my level and doesn’t seem to do the damage that the tooltip says.
The game is very unpolished, and well unfinished as far as tooltips go. Ive learned not to even look at them as 90% of them are wrong and this is a numbers game…
Yeah most of the tooltips are liars. Don’t trust them.
The tooltip is correct.
That’s the damage you are putting out. However, it isn’t the final damage as enemy’s armor, buffs and other modifiers also come in to play.
For example, 500 damage on a mob with 100 armor will be different then on a mob with 200 armor. The exact way damage in calculated is not yet understood fully, however you can read more about it here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Damage

What is not understood about it? The formula is quite simple. Tooltips assume a 2600 armor enemy (at level 80) and average weapon damage. Utility use a special weapon where the average damage that is in somewhere in the lower 900s. (969 is its upper boundry)
I may be wrong, but I don’t think armor is accounted for when you have elemental attacks. Even if it did, at 33 my flame breath doesn’t do 284 a tick..nor does my burn/dot dmg from this ability pump out 1770 dmg in 3s. So it has to be a tooltip error.

The damage on the arcane wave tooltip is always wonky in my experience.
I don’t know if arcane blast and arcane wave do EXACTLY the same damage in their formula, but I’m used to it being similar damage. Yet arcane wave shows about double the damage arcane blast does in the tooltip.
Elementalist tooltips seem to not have been updated to reflect the massive beta nerfs. That and various skills and traits are bugged so do not match them.
More annoying is the bug that arcance wave and arcance blast cancel channeled spells like churning earth when they hit a target standing behind you. I hope this gets fixed soon.

The same skill can have different success against different mobs even of the same type and level. In testing in the mists I found some skills do more damage against a medium armored goIem than a lightly armored golem for example.
Armor is surely not the only mitagation mobs have. I have gotton the sense that some mobs are affected more by some spell types, ice by fire etc. but I haven’t tried to test that. Who cares after all? No one is going to alter skill rotations for specific types of mobs. It’s not a critical issue for success and attunement swapping is far more important.
I won’t try to claim that there are no tool tip errors though.
Could it be that Meteor Shower is bugged in Ascalonian Catacombs then? It can take out a burrow all by itself…yet when I try to take it down with just about all of my other skills, it takes a very long time.
With the Meteor Shower, it’s almost instant. Is it really that much stronger?

You’ll notice that Drake Breath tooltip has number 4 on the burning that means it will reapply the 3s Burning 4 times if channeled fully. Thus in your case
1770/3/4 = 147 or 148 (rounding) Burning damage per tick ( one second) for 12 seconds if fully channeled. Thus by using burning formula it tells me you had about 30 condition damage stat. It works.
The tooltips are exact for all condition damage, for all healing, … Why? Because they do not take enemys defences, or any modifiers into account for their damage/tick (keep that in mind (traits, protection…)), thus they can be predicted before hand.
Arcane wave or blast idd has odd tooltip, but I don’t know of other that would have a wierd one. Not that I would look em often.
Like Wildclaw.6073 explained tooltips use a default armor value which obviously is not
shared among all targets.
The exact formula for direct damage is, or how I like to formulate it
c*M_t*M_a*P*W/A
where c is skill specific constant, M_t is SUM of modifiers affecting on the target, M_a is product of modifiers affecting on the attacker, Power, Weapon Damage, Armor.
