I’ve been finding artificing quite a pain to level mostly due to the sheer # of logs needed to discover everything. I do staff last cause it takes 6 planks to make the shaft, ridiculous!
Basically, i’m thinking of dumping artificer for tailor because it’s a pain to level and I prefer D/D over staff for PvE, so I’d rather be able to make all the endgame armor (6 pieces) over crafting a single staff. I still like jeweler however as you wear 5 pieces from it (2 rings, 2 accessories, and an amulet) and being to craft those instead of buying them will be nice.

Artificer is not hard to level, just avoid making Staffs etc.! http://www.guildwars2crafting.net/crafting-leveling-guides/gw2-artificer-leveling-guide-1-400/ + other sites have some decent tips for it. And while the mats for them are a bit more expensive now, it’s still a fairly cheap craft to max out.
As for me, I went Tailoring + Jewelcrafting.

my ele was a jeweler at first, and I may still end up switching back to it, but as for artificer… yeah its meh…lol
For my elementalist, I went tailoring, artificing. When leveling Artificer, I made tridents the most because they were the cheapest in terms of mats. I also discovered around 80-90% of the potions, which really helped getting it leveled without requiring too many rare ingredients.
Cooking is also a very good profession to have. You can get some excellent buffs from food.
