So, I just got my elementalist to level 30, and I’m trying to catch my story quest up while 100%ing the zones those story quests are in. But everytime I try to do level 19 tasks, I die, instantly, 1v1, against level 19 mobs, while I’m level 30 in level 25 gear….How is that even possible?

elemental is very boring at low lvl.
its like a roller coaster.

What weapon are you using ?
(myself i went staff 1 – 80, boring, as you have to tank mobs in lava font,
but it worked for me..

but yes, i had a few trouble times also.

dual dagger, usually fire. Is there any way to get around the survivability problems? Boredom isn’t an issue, it’s being downed every five seconds on what should be trivial tasks.

“usually fire” – this is where your problem lies. Try to flick between attunements, for example using updraft in air followed by burning speed from fire. It’s a strong class, even at the lower levels.

Look at some videos too!

I’m level thirty, and I just switched it so my two maxed out traits are Arcane and Water, hopefully that will increase my survivability a bit. I will also try and stance dance as much as possible.

Assuming you’re already in combat, fire 3, 4, 2, 5 will kill most.

Fire 3, 4, 2, 5 > Earth 4, 5, 2 ( or 2, 4, 5 or 5, 2, 4 or whatever ) will kill almost anything that’s a non-vet.

Air 4, 5, 2 to enter into combat before going to AoE spam work.

Water 3, 2, to give yourself breathing room and a quick heal.

A few things.

1. I strongly suggest getting some extra Vitality from somewhere. Eles are super squishy and you definitely want some room to screw up. Toughness and Healing Power help a lot as well but I prefer Vitality to help deal with condition spikes. Eles with a bit of tankiness do much better in PvE than glass eles.

2. Learn to love Glyph of Lesser Elementals and Glyph of Elementals. Those are on my bar pretty much all the time in PvE. Hiding behind a tanky ol’ earth Elemental can make most fights run much more smoothly.

3. Scepter/Dagger is a lot safer than D/D. You get a nice toughness buff from Earth 2, blinds from Earth 3 and Air 3, a heal from Water 3, and condition removal from Fire 3. On top of that, you get a bunch of extra range so you can hang back.

4. Learn to stance dance. Making use of all your spells is very important. You can sit in Fire and just spam but it’s much, much less effective.

5. Cantrips can further help your survivability, especially if you have a summoned Elemental behind which to escape. Arcane Shield is great as well, and it can even help you cover spells with long casting times (such as Earth 5 on the dagger).

6. Kite! Move around as much as possible.

Specing into Water and Arcana is a really good start. You should see immediate results. The Ele has kinda a rough time leveling up in PvE compared to a lot of other professions but it’s not a lost cause.

I main Ele and Necro, though I have an alt of each profession at level 80.
How to Condi Reaper on a budget
Everything I say is only in reference to PvE and WvW.

I went D/D and was able to solo well past my level. Story level wise, I had to actually stop doing those quests because I was doing levels so high that I was too low to use the rewards that dropped. So the good news is—- there is probably just some minor changes that you should make to your play style that could result in some major easing of the difficulty for you.

First and foremost— when you cant stand and just nuke your threat—- you gotta learn to kite. I cannot stress this enough. You’ll pretty much use either fire or earth for this, and you’ll just want to drop aoes as you run past mobs. You can use air for swiftness to keep away from the mobs if they get on you— and water to regen your health.

For kiting, earth is probably a little better than fire most of the time. The trick is to target an enemy— then run around and spam earth 1, and earth 2 when its up. Earth 1 has a superior line of sight—- in that it doesn’t really have one at all. So you can literally be hitting a guy chasing after you without ever having to turn around and face them. So long as you can keep your distance— you can use this method to solo just about any melee you might encounter in your quests.

Naturally that also means taking out ranged is your priority.

Signet of Restoration is also a better heal than what you start with, as it will heal you every single time you cast a spell. So in a pinch— you could always use air to keep away from your targets and while you’re spamming earth 1—- you’ll be healing as well.

Another trick I had to do in some higher level quests in order to make it through was to take advantage of the friendly npcs. When they died— Id kite the enemies away, run back and start healing them. When the enemy npc would catch up—- rune and kite away again. It might take a few tries, but once the friendly npc would come up and start tanking a bit for me again— I could go back to dps mode till they died. Rinse and repeat.

Hopefully these tricks will help you a bit. Just remember—- fire is awesome, but you gotta use all of your elemental sets to get the job done much of the time.

Oh and ps—- some toughness wont hurt either. I took everything with toughness I could get.

Those can be tough levels for ele. That was about when I put away the daggers and staff and started going with scepter/dagger instead for the increased range. Arc lightning just got a nice bump too, might be a good time to check it out. As you gain more skills and toughness it should be easier to go back to combat at a closer range – if you choose to. i ended up loving scepter/dagger myself so ended up sticking with it.

Very strange. Currently level 48 on my D/D Ele and I believe I’ve been downed twice in total. Once vs a Champion I got down to 1/3 life then kittened up and second time vs those pesky “Immune to burning, hit you like a truck” mobs in Kessex, but that was before I specced into Water/Arcane.

Sticking to mainly 1 element is strange, could never see that work.

I went to my lvl19 storyline with my staff and unfortunately the boss was immune to burning. Moreover it one-shots me with its fire spell.

I mean one-shot. The first time only 10s after battle started I died. Then I kite it with frequent attunement, successfully dodge or reflect 4 of its deadly fire spell, then died on the 5th when I cut its health to 1/5.

So I asked a warrior I met nearby to tank it. This is a MMO and actually I would like more people to invite others into their storyline so that I can experience different stories.

But indeed elementalist is the weakest when facing all the deadly moves. Among all 3 light armored professionals, necromancer drains health and summons multiple pets, mesmer creates countless illusions, only elementalist takes damages directly with only one summon spell under 30 or two total.
