Combo's
Combos need 2 skills: a combo field and a finisher. You can read in the skill description if a skill is a field or finisher (or none).
On Staff, you have the following fields:
- Fire Field: Fire 2
- Water Field: Water 3, Water 5
- Ice Field: Water 5
- Lightning Field: Air 5
In earth attunement, you have 2 types of inishers:
- Projectile: Earth 1, Earth 5
- Blast: Earth 2
Since Earth 2 is a bit clunky to use as finisher (it’s delayed and you have to place the finisher before the field), you could use Arcane Wave as instant blast finisher. Blast finishers are considered the most powerful and so I list the effects with your fields when combo’d with a blast finisher:
- Fire+Blast = 3 stacks of Might, AoE
- Water+Blast = AoE heal
- Ice+Blast = AoE Frost Armor
- Lighning+Blast = AoE Swiftness

Using a blast finisher (earth 2 or arcane wave):
- in a fire field (fire 2 or 4) will grant AoE 3 stacks of might
- in a water field (water 3 and 5) will give a large AoE burst heal
- in an ice field (water 4) will give AoE frost aura
- in a lightning field (air 5) will grant AoE swiftness
Using a projectile finisher (earth 1, 5, arcane blast):
- in a fire field (F2,F4) will cause projectile finisher passing through the field to cause burning
- in a water field (W3, W5) will grant regeneration to the person firing through the field
- in a lightning field (A5) will cause vulnerability on the target
- in an ice field (W4) will cause chilled on the target
You can get other finisher types from your conjures, but they’re generally not worth it.

What ^ those guys have said sums it up very well, but take into account that other people can finish in your combo fields, which is why staff is nice in group, especially an organised one.
Example, yesterday doing fractals with some guild friends, we were on team speak and were discussing this, and our guardian said: “Yes its fun playing hammer with puff around, because of all the combo fields”.. He then listed them all, so don’t think your efforts putting them up are wasted!!
If you have 30 in the trait Arcana, the trait Evasive Arcana gives a dodge roll in Earth attunement as a blast finisher which can be easily used.
Procing our own fields is of limited use imo because party members are not often in the same vicinity as we are and have to be to benefit from our blast finishers. Arcane wave and arcane blast are nice skills to be sure but take up a valuable slot I have other uses for, not worth it to me for the occcasional field when off cooldown. For a PvP or WvW build Arcane can be a great burst damage dealer when used in a chain of skills though.
Our combos are great for the projectile finishers and can be great for the party. By putting a water field around a mob for example, the melee get healed as well as the ranged who use projectile finishers. A lightning field can be used to stack alot of vulnerabilty in a short time if a party takes advantage of it. The others can be used similarly.
