Current sPvP meta?
I’m no expert, but I think it’s something like…
staff with a very organized group against an enemy with no thieves
Umm…why are you looking to roll an Ele for SPvP? I’m just putting out there that it’s by far the worst class in SPvP right now, could almost be called a liability on the team.
D/D Diamond Skin 0/0/30/20/20
D/D Rock Solid 0/0/20/20/30
S/D Fresh Air 0/0/30/0/10/30
S/D Balanced 0/0/20/0/20/30
Staff Berzerker 30/20/0/10/10
Staff Bunker 0/0/30/20/20 or 0/0/20/20/30
Amulet can be Berzerker, Soldiers or Celestial depending on how fast you want to die. Runes can be whatever, go either full power/crit or defensive (really won’t change the outcome). Slot skills are Ether Renewal, and either full Cantrips or a mix of Cantrips + Arcane Wave (blast finisher) and/or Arcane Shield.
But seriously, in SPvP all the above builds are terrible compared to any viable build of the 7 other classes.

I’ve come to realize that the reason Elementalists are not viable in PvP is pretty much just thieves and to a lesser extent mesmers.
Bursty classes with stealth and plenty of teleports will eat you alive, because you have minimal defensive capabilities.

Umm…“minimal defensive capabilities” doesn’t mean you only get blown up just by 2 classes. It means if you’re not careful you can get blown up by ANY class that uses a damage-heavy build, even other Ele’s.
Sure, Ele’s are free kills for Thieves and Mesmers. But 1v1’s against Rangers, Necros, Engineers or Warriors don’t go all that much easier unless you vastly out-skill them.

Oh, I agree, but thieves and mesmers have just the right mix of stuff to ensure that they can very close to instantly kill you without any chance of you retaliating, whether you play perfectly or not, because of stealth, defense mechanics, teleportation and very high burst.
I can actually take down a lot of other stuff even using staff, but I do recognize that if a mesmer or thief shows up I’m dead meat.
people still have trouble with thieves? didn’t s/d get nerfed?

I’m that one guy who still has fun in spvp even though I have two hard counters. I’m over it.
Wintel and I disagree that ele is a liability. It is certainly one in the wrong hands, as I know you need more skill to play ele now more than ever.
You’ll know if ele isn’t right for you by how dedicated you are to the class. Also, don’t just follow the “meta” most of the best builds aren’t found by sticking to the “meta”.

That only applies to Ele’s because of their constant struggle to make something work : /

I know what you mean, I run 30 fire and it works fine for me usually, you just sort of have to accept that if you screw up, you’re dead.
I don’t particularly like that there are builds that can get me without using skill at all, but I like the class enough to work around it. Ironically enough, it tends to be that I end up killing thieves who actually try to use skill more often then spammy ones.
The spammy ones can hit too fast for me to heal, and I run out of dodges before they run out of initiative.
Elementalists are universally considered the worst PvP profession. There are NO viable builds:

My current build which is a pretty good dps teamfighter/support and can survive on its own pretty well:

0/0/20/30/20 gives you 2 condi clears every water swap, a random condi clear when you get crit, rock solid to cover ether renewal, acceptable burst with valkyrie/arcane wave/lightning flash, good sustained damage, and you get the full condi-wipe from lyssa (wanted the precision to proc renewing stamina, although eagle could work if you want a little more offense).
Perhaps not optimal but I feel like it gives me a shot in most situations.
Interesting build BlackBeard, I shall give it a try. Though Lyssa with a 3 minute cooldown elite seems like a waste to be honest. I’ll probably use Ogre, Melandru or most likely Hoelbrak instead.

I use Lyssa primarily because I want the precision so that Renewing Stamina can proc. I only picked Lyssa from the precision runes b/c it was the best option. If I weren’t going to take Lyssa, I’d take either pack or eagle runes. In fact, pack runes might be slightly better as you do get a lot of power, plus additional boons on being struck.
I had more dps-oriented runes initially, but felt that renewing stamina didn’t proc frequently enough, even with the accuracy sigil and fury. This is one of those cases where I wanted precision for defensive purposes.
Thanks for the explanation! I didn’t look too much at the stats of your build but you’re right, 20% crit chance without any point in air does make crit chance runes pretty interesting.
Well, I will agree that having an Ele in a team fight is many times just a free rally for the opposition. However, in the hands of a very skilled zerk ^Staff^ ele using Teamspeak, said zerk ele can change the outcome of every large fight in a match. (Hotjoin: forget it hahaha)
ex: 4v3 mid at the start of a fight. Lets say it’s on Khylo. The ele goes above Clocktower and hits air5/earth5/fire2/fire5/tornado all onto point, and it’s an auto win for your team. Now, you say “duh” someone will peel off to 3 shot the ele!". Well that’s fine, now you’ve just made the fight in CT a 3v3 AND you’ve gotten a lot of your DPS skills off as well. Lightning flash down over point and leave a cc trail. Even if you go down you’ve left a large atvantage for your team on mid, and with the time bought by mist form, your team should have by now at least downed one of the people on CT and you can expect a rally.
I am by no means the Ele skilled enough to reliably do that every time, but our team runs with an Ele who does. And you would be supprised how many times everything on point suddenly dies, or how the thief suddenly leaves mid chasing the Ele off point while we down people in mid.
Again, the Ele right now is NOT an on-point class, but I would recommend trying it with a good group on teamspeak, it can be a lot of fun!:)
So yes Ele’s are not the best choice for Spvp/Tpvp, but they do force a “chess match” mind game for the enemy.
