D/D with anything other than Cele?
I use that in WvW small group roaming. I go in, things explode, then I go out. Works very well for me.

Exotic Celestial armor is also craftable through Tailoring, though that a) requires you to hit 400 in Tailor and b) requires a lot of Charged Quartz Crystals, which are both expensive and time-gated. I have a set because I mined an absurd number of Quartz Cyrstals back when the Zepherite event was going on and have been habitually Charging them up over time, but it’s undeniably one of the most irritating sets to put together.
D/D is strongest with Celestial, but it can work with other sets just fine. It was still our strongest set before Celestial was introduced. As I recall, Soldier’s armor was meta for a while, or was it Cleric’s? I ran a mix of stats at the time rather than one set. You absolutely don’t want to run too much damage, though, as you’ll crumple instantly all the time.
How to Condi Reaper on a budget
Everything I say is only in reference to PvE and WvW.
You don’t go full celestial. Just pick up a few pieces of celestial jewelry.
You really don’t have to be afraid of using high damage. The meta has always leaned towards bunker and sustain, but it’s certainly not the only way to play the weapon set.

Would replacing the zerker pieces with soldiers work? Just to add some more tough and vit.

It would, though you might want to shift the build more towards power and away from ferocity. If you can’t guarantee the crits then it’s not worth as much.

I alternate between celestial and rabid amulet for D/D spvp. I may also run Earth vs Fire line for more defense. Lots of crits, toughness, and condition damage. Need to watch condition cleansing with the lower HP.
You can literally play any build on Ele, one of the reasons I love the class…..
But I just made a post you might be interested in, https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/elementalist/PvP-Rabid-Burn-build/first#post5444607
….. And Elementalist.
You mean for pve/dungeons also or?
Because in pve I go full zerker and have no problems at all after I learned how to properly dodge and avoid getting hit.
I go fire top-bot-mid
Arcane mid-mid-top
Water top—mid-bot
This way I can stack might, dodge properly with the Vigor and heal with good hits.
Also because enemies die so often in pve and you always need to dodge consider using Superior Sigil of Stamina. Each time you kill a foe your stamina is fully refilled. This way you pretty much always have a dodge to your disposal.
Use Signet of restoration and learn to go earth and palce Sandstorm not to get hit. Also you can use the fire trait that blinds enemies if you have problems, but I think might is much better in pve.
You may have a little low crit chance but fix that with a 7% Sigil of Accuracy for 45% and with your first hit you will have 70% with the arcana trait line you will gain fury when you change attunement or get hit. So it works great in combat.

I should mention, this is going to be WvW/PvE focused.
I never PvP on my Ele. I save that for my Warrior and Thief.
I’m still quite interested in any ideas for pieces to use for my D/D set.
I can get my hands on some decent stuff eventually.
