After engineer(main) and guardian(my 2nd char) I want to try my 3rd char – an elementalist – in WvW. I only played him to 80 + personal storyline in PvE… with boring double dagger and some trait that gave might when attacking with fire attunement(so staying like a noob most of the time in fire and not like a pro switching attunements all the time).

Now I want to play a bit different… I heard staff is recommended in WvW(cause of some field that can give swiftness) and Scepter Dragon Tooth is good to hit stuff on walls?

So should I mainly use staff(I only want to run in big zerg and stay behind the zerg ranging… for small group fights I’d prefer to use my engineer) and sometimes a bit scepter?

What equipment recommended? Can I go full berserker then? Or still some toughness or vitality… or even a bit condition damage?

And most important: Which traits are recommended?

You can play whatever you want in a zerg. But if you want to be useful, Staff (0/0/10/30/30) with ’zerker trinkets and PVT/Knight armor will be the best fit.

Drop Static on the flanks to stun them; Earth 2 & 5 for the snares; and water fields so melee can blast them for heals.

Hmm, really? Ele is actually very survivable if you play it right. Sure, staff ele won’t win many 1v1s, but you sure as hell are gonna take forever to catch and kill me. I’ve kited 5 people from S camp to Citadel before (to be fair, they weren’t great).

And my 190k+ wvw kills tells me that I’ve died about 95x less often than I kill/get tags on someone else. (that’s a 95:1 k:d ratio)

That is not really helping lol.

Thanks to the guy that messaged me ingame that offered to help. But I think I prefer to use the forums.

I think if you are carful you can stay alive long with every class and build… and of course if bigger enemy zerg is rushing you you always will die no matter how tanky.

So I looked a bit at the traits and skills and at the moment I’m trying signets + some other combo traits that buff auras and fury stuff + trait which makes signet giving that fire aura thing.

Not like the 20k damage you usually read in forums about but I’m still trying and only using mainly green lvl 80 gear at the moment. The 2-4k damage I’m getting is still fun at the moment(and most classes don’t have that much hp and getting hit by more other enemies and not only me in zerg fights so it is good for the start). Also giving good loot.

I don’t believe this statement for one minute. I just recently started doing WvW with my Sons guild that is mainly a WvW guild. I have a Sep/Dag Ele that is not at all geared for WvW. I haven’t died once except for when I should have (everyone died because the groups we were fighting were much larger than ours).

I even asked the Guild members if I was doing Ok in WvW and they all said, yes.

I understand you may not be able to do well but that goes more to not having any ‘game’ not the AT.

It all about skill, not an easy I win button/AT.

^But there is an easy “I win button” in this game. 2 actually. They’re called permastealth thief and stun spam warrior with perplexity runes.

I’m playing different a bit now. I got some suggestions and most suggested some points in the water trait lines and stuff. But I already have my Guardian at full support with 80+ boon duration and staff and hammer.

I wanted full damage. So first I saw sigil + aura trait combination that lets sigils apply one of these auras and then some trait to get fury on aura. Not that good(but I might try using sigils for small scale group fighting builds for their active effects with trait that gives passive even if on CD… maybe trying something in sPvP cause cheap to change gear and builds and hotjoin lol not affecting my ranks).

I then switched to arcane… focussing on crit damage(not crit chance – using that one arcane for sure crits):

Little bit toughness on gear to not stay at 900. Traits stuff like +damage on fire +damage on stun +damage after using arcane(don’t know if this all stacks, I hope so). Also the scholar rune.

Mist form to run away(some people suggest lightning flash but it does not have stun break and I just use arcane shield there to also benefit from my traits). Tornado for the lulz to knock people down… small fights I might use elemental or some asura golem(but I think elemental is stronger and less CD).

It’s okay so far. Of course no running solo. Small groups if they don’t focus you. Big zerg if you can stay out of their aoe spikes(mainly a problem with Meteor shower that takes time to channel). The Arcane Shield is helping a bit no cast time and you can still use the skills(Meteor Shower) and spamming skill 1 on staff fire is also good… small AoE and good damage with traits.

I’m having fun so far. Waiting for that new patch december and then checking to change a bit but I saw tempest defense trait defensive stuff I think got internal CD buff… might be even better then.

For organized guilds, staff ele’s are very important. It can also be a lot of fun. If you are roaming than scepter/dagger fresh air builds is some of the best fun i have had in awhile.
If you want to just have some fun, d/d can make a decent frontline build so you can play with the melees.

I would honestly say ele’s are one of the top 4 classes for 10+ man engagements in wvw. (Guards/warriors/necros being the other 3). So do not listen to the people who hate on the class in this aspect of the game.

If you happen to be on a Gold League (intense fighting), you need:

Traits: Water 20 or 30 (traits that heal or cleanse and increases your health) and Arcana 20 or 30 (blasting staff , elemental attunement).

Gear: Full soldiers armor & trinkets, runes and upgrades optional (your preference)

Play style: Water fields and fire fields for blast finishers (healing and might), CC are frozen ground, static field and unsteady ground.

Air staff 1 or Fire staff 2,3,5 to tag downed players for loot bags when your zerg is winning.

Stay away from frontline fights, you are squishy.

And finally you are most welcomed by any zerg but you may find it an unrewarding role.

What is asking to ele in wvw is to CC ennemy and provide water field.
Currently, you have two kind of build:
30 in air for more dps (CC focused)
30 in water for more dispell (water focused).
In my mind 30in air is better as war and guard have way enought dispell. So i run 30 air (botl to heart, alatracy (for 5air) and tempest defense (amazing increase of DPS)) 20water and 20 arcane.

post 10th dec, you’ll be able to get blasting staff for only 10 in arcana, so you’ll be able to get both 2type of build in one:

i sugest full celestial cause you need mass HP cause of retaliation, this stuff provide it to you and give you also insane CD.

Tempest seems made careful not to make ele better in any way, since that would be bad
