Ele litmus test - can you?
Spoiler: It’s a trick question. No sane person solos in WvW.
Crimson Imperium Reborn
lol….soloing in WvW is GENERALLY a bad idea but not always. I often solo the map taking out enemy dollyaks…which is a huge benefit by denying supply. And since I’ve very mobile, I’m better off soloing than going with many people because they’ll end up falling behind or getting me killed if I have to help them.
But as far as supply camps go, I mean the ones on your side of the map…so if you can run up there and solo it…it frees up more people to do other things. Then just WP back and join the fray….and your server is better off because of your quick response because supply is life in WvW.
The Ele litmus test is PvE proficiency?
I’m not fully geared atm but I can ALMOST do it. It is very hard… D/D
I do this all the time D/D 10/0/20/20/20
Did this last night and claimed my camp as Queen of the Hylek.
Leader of the 3 man Pop Up Pirates(POMF)
Pretty OK Elementalist
I devised a litmust test for an elementalist that I like…if you WvW –
1) Can your ele solo a supply camp? Yes
2) Can your ele take out the veteran guard that does mele? Yes
3) Can your ele take out two veteran guards that shoot guns and whatnot? Yes
4) Can your ele take out quatermaster? Yes
5) Can your ele take out Veteran guild claiming npc? Yes
6) Can your ele take out dolly’s that usually run in and try to kick you? Yes
Now if you are asking me if I can pull them all at once and do it. No.
Pulling smartly is the key.
I solo all the time in WvW with staff and or d/d depending on my mood.
Taking out camps solo is definitely easier in my staff condition build setup.
Slightly harder in my dd/support setup.
Haven’t tried a camp with dagger setup :p Maybe i will do this tonight.
The real problem I tend to have are enemies running in looking for supplies while I am killing a vet.
How is this hard? Pull out the earth elemental and let him tank the main guy while you blow up the rest. After elemental dies just kite him around….
Soloing the enemy camps can be challenging. Usually I just rush in, pop in churning earth+lightning flash, aggro everything (sometimes I’ll kill an enemy player while I’m kiting the mobs), spread DoT’s on the scout / veteran mob, etc. Dont forget to pop the summon (on earth ofc)
There’s really no point in pulling each individual mob, b/c that just takes way too long.

A rather narrow litmus test. My own involves a combination of the following:
- Presence of signets on skill bar
- Frequency of attunement swaps
- Deliberate utilization of combo fields
- Ability to respond to changes in battle (e.g. healing allies)
- Utility nuances (e.g. mist form stomps/rezzes)
Doesn’t even get into stuff that extends outside the class, like general awareness, communication, teamwork, etc. Context is also a huge factor.
Can I do those things on my elementalist? Yeah.
Would I ever want to do those things on my elementalist when I could do them with far less effort on any of my other toons? No.
I can kill them solo, all of them at the same time. D/D 0/0/30/10/30

Seems to me that more tankish builds are more capable than glass canons.

This holds true for every class in the game. Not just elementalists:)
It is easy to solo a supply camp as an Elementalist. Earth Elemental speeds it up a bit, but is not necessary. It can be quite fun to defend supply camps solo, I do that on a regular basis.
S/D with 20Air/20Water/30Arcana.

What an idiotic comment. I solo a lot in WvW and I do very well.

Pffft, please…. Try soloing the Lord with his 2 casters and soldiers in the SPVP training grounds.
I can solo a supply camp fairly easily with my D/D ele…
Control point guards I can do half-asleep.

Yeah I agree. I honestly think that D/D Ele is one of the best classes for soloing/roaming in WvW because of their insane speed and escape potential.
You may think that soloing doesn’t contribute to your team, but soloing I can easily take supply camps, Dolyaks, control points, and even harass zergs to peel people off as they chase me in frustration.

Every time I try fighting there some random guy comes along and ruins my day lol. The Lord training place is quite a challenge, I can take down 2 soldiers and 1 caster at the same time, but never tried to take on the lot of them. I can also attack the lord whilst his friends rail me, get enough bleeds up then run off to heal while the bleeds almost finish him.

That’s unthinkable to me on any class. Grats to you. The only way I’m going to “solo” a supply camp is to follow a pack of vet frogs.
Non-upgraded camps are fodder. Upgraded camps…..a lot of finesse, luck, and sphincter-clenching moments. Camps with Veteran Hylek Guards……hope you like a repair bill. Fully upgraded camps + Vet Hylek………you’re either really dumb or really ballsy, enjoy the repair bill either way.

Not really, depends what you want to achieve with the build.

This video shoving a D/D trying to solo the supply camp. Some players joined him right at the end but he had no issues before and it is quite obvious he would be able to solo it completely.

So far I’ve seen an warrior (in PVT gear), thief (S/P build), elementalist (D/D), guardian, and ranger done that. I do think engineers, necromancers and mesmers with correct builds are able to solo it too .
