Ele transition class?
i plan on playing all of the characters. i already have an 80 warrior.
the game has an interesting learning curve
Yeah I have a lot of chars, including a 67 ranger, but after playing ele I can’t go back
Maybe you could try a staff mesmer if you like conditions. Also my enginer is my sevond fav after ele of course.
Nothing. None of the other classes come even close to being interested after playing d/d ele.
Mesmer is probably the closest, but unfortunately I don’t like the play style at all. Every other class just seems so boring.
Started on Mesmer in the beta, switched to ele, played 1000 games on ele, cannot get enough of it!!
Right?! Ele seems to be, by far, the most active playstyle. It’s tough to play anything else. Why are people saying mesmer? Aside from wearing cloth, I don’t see much in common.
I played Mesmer first, it’s lvl 80, now I’m playing a D/D Ele and thinking it’s going to be my new main, I’ve played all other classes and only seem to have fun with ele and mesmer, you might like staff Mesmer like someone said.
I can’t play anything else other than D/D ele as well. Everything else and I do mean everything else bores me to sleep. I start yawning and falling asleep at how simple and brain dead the other professions are.
I’m leveling a necro atm and it feels very strong with S/F or D and staff.
I can easily face tank damage that would have my ele scrambling to survive while stacking conditions to the sky. It doesn’t have the same mobility as an ele, but it does have some slipperiness with the ability to drop what amounts to a personal mesmer portal with Spectral walk/recall. I pop this before wading into a zerg to drop wells/marks and then blink back to my zerg when I start getting low health. The range is a little shorter than I would like though.
You have good condition removal in your weapon powers without having to spec for it, because a lot of the class focus is on transferring your conditions to your enemies.
Death shroud doesn’t have great abilities, but it gives you a giant mess of health to buy time while your cooldowns reset.
Maybe things are different in high level competitive play, but I don’t know why this class isn’t more popular. If you enjoy being really tanky and wearing people down with conditions, necro is a good choice.
we may consider whether or not there is an incarnation of [ele] that would be viable

Ele is my absolute favourite class. Ever.
I enjoy engi for a similar versitility to the elementalist, being able to set out guns and change weapon kits is fun. Also the rifle has almost as much maneuverability as some of the ele skills.
Really like my ranger for a complete change of pace.
Play the necro for the cool assosciations with death, having a minion army and being able to use magical dagger attacks like the ele.
Again though… I can’t really paly any other class without comparing it to the elementalist :c
Engineer would be a good candidate as their weapon kits act much like our attunement swapping, they have great bunker builds and decent condition damage builds. Nothing will have the healing an Ele does however Engi does have some decent healing options.
Kittens, Kittens everywhere!
I have two “main” alts and two “alt” alts. I may be a bit addicted to making new characters. >_>
Engineer: So much fun! Their Weapon Kits work a lot like attunements and overall they have quite a bit of versatility. They’re nowhere near as slippery as Elementalists, however; my Engi is a lot more likely to go down if he gets caught, though he still has a few tricks up his sleeve. My favorite setup is Pistol/Shield with a Flamethrower tucked into my utilities, and then the rest is turrets. Monsters get terribly distracted by your turrets, leaving you free to bleed+poison+burn+confusion them to death. Oh, plus Toolbelt skills are really fun, and on occasion are even better than the main skill! (Elixer R: main skill breaks stun and refills your endurance, which is nice, but the Toolbelt skill is a ground-targeted effect that cures allies’ conditions and revives them).
Thief: Thieves are less versatile than Engis, but they still have some cool tricks up their sleeve. With invisibility, they can be almost as slippery as Eles. The Initiative system is an interesting way to use weapon skills, a nice break from the Ele method of switching to an attunement, blowing everything you can, and then switching to something else. They’re highly tactical, and if you play them right you murder everything in the face. Oh, and the Shortbow reminds me a lot of the Staff.
My other alts are a Necromancer and Warrior, but I haven’t played them enough to really comment on their playstyle. (I mostly made them to call dibs on two names, one of which I had for my GW1 Necro and the other of which I just wanted).

Everything I say is only in reference to PvE and WvW.
I alted a ranger (80) and while it does require more work to play overall its not as fluid as ele. Going over to engineer next. Also have a P/D thief 70 mainly used for pvp if used at all these days.
For me its like this. D/D ele is a Swiss army knife and no matter what class I go to I end up wanting all those tools.
Given what the OP said I am pretty sure alchemy potions P/P engineer, mesmer staff (shatter confusion spammer or clone condition bleed or both lol) and anything D/D blossom or P/D thief are the only real options.

I agree with everyone else here in that Elementalist is by far my favorite class.
That being said, I also enjoy Necro for similar reasons to Caffynated. Playing Ele is a fast-paced fight for survival, which is exciting, but sometimes it’s nice to just face tank with the Necro. And if you want survivability, conditions, and slipperiness, that’s pretty much what Necro is all about. You have an extra health bar in shroud, plenty of conditions, the ability to not only remove conditions but to give them to your enemies, etc.
If I left for anything it would be necro next. I played one in beta and you have to have your wits to you, you win by inches and not miles. Its also got some interesting escapes. Also conditions… yes.
My previous main was a mesmer, try it now and it seems so slow and detached, since your illusions do a lot of work for you, and your #1 attacks are pretty central to your damage.
Engineer also interests me though I know little about them.
alts: Fangyre (Necro), Hardrawk (Ele);

I also play a mesmer and thought I can’t say why they are similar I feel they are in way (strength wise). Possibly because they are up close and personal and rely on alot of active input to stay alive. They are also particulally powerful (though I feel my ele is more powerful than my mesmer now).
Mesmer, Engineer, or Thief. Those would be your best bets.
Mesmer-up close damage, similar to D/D Ele in that fact
Engineer-very versatile. Kits are similar to Atunements.
Thief-slippery as hell. If you don’t want to die, you won’t.
Im starting a elementalist alt, but I am mostly staff while leveling(only level 12 atm). I do have a question for D/D ele in WvW, when sieging a tower or SM castle, what can the D/D offer in those situations? from what I can tell going D/D really have no range spell, correct?

Yeah, when besieging, switch to your staff. As a D/D ele, all you can really do is heal allies with Water 2 and 5 or pop Fire 4 + Earth 4 and 5 to grant AoE Might. If you’re running an Auramancer build, I guess you could pop Air 3 and Water 4 to grant mass Auras, but that’s still a largely inefficient use of your time.

thanks for the info, much appreciated. I wonder why Ele (I assume Necro too) cant have weapon swap like other classes, that’s not fair…

Engie is a lot like ele. kits are just like attunements. A lot of the trait lines are even similar. I play both but prefer elementalist cuz i am a wizard type of guy.
but don’t listen to the advice on how to make your engie. they can be made into tanks, dps or support. my engie is a tank/healer. he never dies. a thief can run away sure, my engie calmly walks to where he wants to go and moves everyone out of his way.

i am enjoying my thief. she’s specced for full power/precision and just destroys all PVE content I throw her at. Fragility is not an issue when you can simply stealth and teleport out of any sticky situation.

Ele’s don’t get weapon swaps because then we would have access to 40 weapon skills at any given time vs other class’ 10, and that’s just too much. It’s not really a problem in WvW, honestly. Just back out of the fight to swap. Especially in the case of a siege, you’ll have way more than enough time.
(Incidentally, Engineers are the only other profession that doesn’t have weapon swaps, and they both get Toolbelt skills for their profession mechanic and they can place weapon kits in their Utility slots, which actually gives them a lot of flexibility).
