Elementalist Farming
It is normal for low Lv. Eles at low lv really suck at defense themselves. The only way for you to survive in lower lv is use Ranger Weapon (Staff-Specter/Dagger Set) and put as many pts as you can into Water tree until you have at least 20 pts in Water, then put the rest to Arcane until you have 20pts in Arcane tree. Pick up P/T/V Gear as many as you can. Until you are at least lv 60+, then you will have easier time to play. Below 60, endure the pain and reap the reward

You could try using traits and gear more directed towards survivability at lower levels (i.e. Earth/Water Traits, toughness gear). Thing is, heavy attunement swapping isn’t so viable until you get more points that you can put into Arcane (for shorter attunement CD). Putting a lot of points in that early on however will not yield any bonus stats since it just gives boon duration and attunement CD passively.
Arcane Wave and Arcane Missile are great for levelling.
I levelled with staff but this was back during the release of the game when there were a lot of people playing (so I rarely solo’d anything). Perhaps Scepter/Dagger would be better now for solo levelling. Maybe even Dagger/Dagger if you don’t mind being almost melee range (thought might be harder to kill vets with unless they hit for nothing).
I have rolled up 2 elementalist to 80 now.
First time I really hated it. More than anything, it was abysmal. I didn’t “get it” and had a lot of frustration with it. I actually put it on pause for a long time and made a Mesmer instead. Eventually I got bored and forced myself till I got to 40 and went with a Conjure Lightning Hammer build (20/0/0/10/0) and then it was pretty smooth sailing to 80. Unfortunately I hated the Asura (animation, voice, etc) and remade my character a Human.
Second time after unlocking all the skills for each weapon I went with S/D instead of staff and had a much, much easier time:
1. Early stats you should focus on Power and Vitality for gear. At 20-21 you start to unlock the dual stat gear. Don’t worry about Crit at all.
2. With S/D you get a lot of kiting potential. Most of the time you will either be in Air (primary) or Earth (secondary) because both have pretty spammable blinds and some CC to get you out of trouble if you get caught. Always be on the move. Fire can be used in a pinch if you have to AOE a lot of targets down at once but it can be dangerous to setup the Dragon’s Tooth → Ring of Fire → Phoenix → Fire Grab combo but it’ll one shot most groups if you can survive. Be ready to swap to Water after to Cleansing Wave and use Signet of Restoration to heal (cause it’ll add regen).
3. At 40 you can start using Conjure Lightning Hammer build. (20/0/0/10/0). This will let you permanently blind most of your opponents. Fighting Dredge you’ll still need to use S/D and you will learn to hate Dredge. Otherwise Lightning Hammer does a lot of AOE damage, a lot of CC, and since you can sit in Water and use it you will pick up some nifty regen and defenses coupled with Cantrips.
That’s pretty much it. Isn’t that bad once you get it down.
Guys hi, I am a newbie and I am playing an elementalist. The problem is while I am farming I get killed so much, I am level 15 and all creatures in my level kill me in 5 or 6 hits. Is that normal or is there something I am doing wrong. I can’t do most of the slot skill events on my own and I can’t kill any veteran creatures. Looking for your help and comments!…
5-6 hits might be the problem here. 5-6 hits is probably going to get you killed anywhere in the world unless you take significant healing power or other defensive stats, which you won’t be able to really invest in until higher levels.. Kite harder if you’re playing scepter/staff, and try to learn the animations of your mobs so you can dodge more effectively if you’re playing in melee.

Kiting is what Eles do.
Never stand still and let things hit you. And try dagger/dagger.

D/D under lv 60 is a way to die fast UNLESS you are experience with Eles. In this case, you should not be dying a lot.
