The concept is simple:
Gather a group of S/D or D/D elementalists.
Get them on voice-communications.
Start Churning earth at the same time.
Teleport to the same target.
???
Profit.
This has worked very well for our small group operating in much larger zergs. For any of you who like to win, but hate being another face in the masses… try this! Get a few elementalist friends together, and stack your churns. Whenever the zerg you’re running with gets stuck fighting another zerg… every 30 seconds, your small 3-5 man team is going to visibly push the enemy back and make a -big- difference.
Small-group tactics. Big-group fights.
Edit: Back by popular demand, here is a video with 5 elementalists—stacking churns
Update:
Here’s a few more videos for ego-stroking purposes. Our guild was founded on the concept of elementalist stacking, and we are getting better and better at it. Here’s some (mostly) unedited footage:

Cool idea. I like it. The music though…
Nice! That’d be really interesting to incorporate that into TC’s tactics.
Nice! Also works with Meteor Shower and staggered Static Fields for AoE death zones. The Stealth > Multi-Churning Earth seems super mean!
I am surprised I haven’t seen many multi-boxing in GW2. WoW had a bunch and that had a $15 dollar a month subscription. Think I remember a few in Warhammer also. In a zerg vs zerg battle, 5 people hitting the exact same targets at the exact same time would be pretty powerful.
Stealth > Multi-Churn is amazing
The best benefit of this is door defence. There is no way any attacking force (regardless of size) will ever ram down a gate with an elementalist group like this behind it. We stack churns behind the door, and teleport to the back of it, dropping churns (3-6k per) and placing maximum stacks of bleed on anyone who mans those suckers…
The rams last longer than the players… and even then, only for 1-2 minutes.
That last bit with the camp capture and holding is stellar WvW play. It’s impressive on the level of “things which actually matter in WvW”, which is rare. Awesome.

As long as 1 button press equals 1 button press, it doesn’t matter how many instances of GW2 that 1 button press triggers on.
Wish I had a good group of a few eles. Nice teamwork.
If you bring a single extra elementalist with you with a focus off-hand, you can double your defensiveness with projectile blockers and protection & fury-granting auras, too. Plus, he can Lightning Flash to your locations as well, in addition to providing solid support and a bit of CC.

It does if you are unable to push that one button on all instances without the use of third party software. The fact that you have to use programs such as auto hotkey etc technically makes it against the TOS of just about every online game. Blizzard just turned a blind eye because that guy was paying 5x what you were paying.
Of course if you were running 5 seperate machines hooked up to a hardware system that did the same keystroke simultaneously on all 5 then that they can’t do anything about… its a fine line really.

Thanks everyone, for your replies! We’ve recently upped our ante and made a 5-man elementalist churning group to ridiculous effect. Videos will come soon on that.
Good quality. Now you just need to play better. :p
You guys need to do some might stacking before doing a churning earth bomb. Multiple elementalists coordinating to stack might can get themselves to 25 stacks easily within a few seconds.
Is that 58 bleeding damage? I can’t really see it.
I always wanted to do a coordinated spike similar to this, kudos for having teamwork to pull it off.
Has put a smile back on my elementalist face.
Good stuff.
lol that was awesome!! Everytime i see people play dagger dagger i always think “Omg that looks like so much fun!” and then i play it on my ele and i go “Omg… now i remember why i despise melee…” looks like i’m gonna bust the daggers out again though to see why i hate them xD
D/D Elementalist is -a lot- of fun. For anyone who ever said that GW2 is ‘too easy’ because there’s only 2 sets of skills, try a D/D elementalist.
4 bars with rapid cooldowns means you’re constantly balancing your element cooldowns with the abilities you need. When duelling, you have to stay 10-15 seconds ahead of your opponent, or you’re not going to get the spike damage you need.
But I digress, I’m not even very good at it. I just work with some good ele’s to make up for my obvious deficiencies

Dagger dagger -is- REALLY fun, I just can’t stand being in Melee range xD, if only it had slightly longer ranged attacks, it’d be my favorite set…. Well actually staff would probably still be staff…. But w/e.
Which skill do you use to teleport ? I didn’t think R/L worked for that.
Someone else mentioned might stacking. How would they do that ?
Also, didn’t understand this …."There is no way any attacking force (regardless of size) will ever ram down a gate with an elementalist group like this behind it. We stack churns behind the door, and teleport to the back of it, dropping churns "

It’s a utility/cantrip skill, Lightning flash. You press that skill, select the area where you want to go, then either press the button again or left click to teleport.
While sounding like an okay skill in itself, its usefulness increases exponentially when you use it in conjunction with other skills. Churning Earth is the #5 skill in the Earth attunement for elementalists using a dagger in the offhand slot. It takes 3 seconds to start and then finish. During that time, you can use lightning flash to teleport before the channel ends.
In World versus World (a player versus player environment, but with entire servers against each other in seperate, massive maps), the towers, keeps have small colored portals. You use these instead of passing through the large gate. (useful during a siege when you don’t want the enemy to get in but you do) When inside the fort itself, you position yourself next to the portal, channel, then teleport to the portal (which takes you outside) and finally finish the channel for churning earth, taking the enemy hammering on the gate by surprise. This would be extremely effective with multiple elementalists.
Might stacking is possible through the use of several tools elementalists make use of better than other classes.
1. Sigil of Battle – sigils are things you add to a weapon (with a free slot, of course) that comes with an extra effect to boost the weapon’s usefulness. They come in different levels. (Minor ? Major ? Superior) Sigil of Battle gives you 3 Might stacks upon swapping to a new attunement.
2. Combo Fields – Elementalists can set up combo fields easily through the use of (for example, dagger/dagger) Fire #4 and Earth #5. To get Might, you (or an ally) needs to use a spell that has a “Blast Finisher” on it (should be in the tooltip) and that allies need to be nearby to gain Might when this combo occurs. For Blast finisher spells, Elementalists can go into Earth and use Earth #4 in a combo field.
ex. Fire #4 ? Earth #4 = might stacks.
(There is also the Grandmaster only trait in the Arcana traitline named Evasive Arcana. This skill creates a spell effect at the end of your dodge depending on your current attunement. However, in Earth, your dodge ALSO has a blast finisher – so you can dodge roll, while in Earth attunement, in a combo field for easy Might stacks. Useful!)
3. Boon Duration Runes – Elementalists LOVE boons. (Boons are buffs in this game: Protection, Regeneration, Might, Swiftness, Fury, and Stability) Runes are just like sigils, except you add them to armor, not weapons. There is a WIDE selection of runes, but there are certain runes that increase the duration of boons. Runes may seem different to you, because they sort of act like an armor set in another game. (having the same pieces of a set gives you additional bonuses) Runes also come in different levels like Sigils. (Minor ? Major ? Superior)
ex. Having 2 Rune of Water and Monk gives extra boon duration. Some elementalists ignore the extra bonuses of having full Runes of Water or Monk and instead go for 2 runes EACH for both increases in Boon Duration. Since there are only two runes of that kind, players also use a weaker kind of Water or Monk runes for the lesser (but nonetheless useful) boon duration increase.
Hope that cleared up some things. Feel free to ask more questions, this board welcomes you!

The might-stacking reference is due to the combo fields. Being D/D ele, you get to drop a lot of combo fields. Casting spells in these combo fields gives you 3 stacks of might.
Alone, this is not a lot. You just get between 6-9 just through your normal processes of switching elements (churning into a ring of fire, for example). But now you have 3 elementalists.
And your ring of fire, is a combo field for another player’s ring of fire. If you have 3 elementalists dropping AoEs in each other’s rings, you get to 25 stacks of might in almost no time at all.
The reason we don’t do it BEFORE the engagement, is because (as easy as it might look) stacking 3 churns at the same instant is not easy. You dont have time to dance around a fire building might stacks before the churn. The first churn is always the weakest, but it is necessary because then all of your elementalists become synched. By the second churn, everyone has 25 stacks of might without even thinking about it (as long as they’re focusing the primary).
When my churn is up, I’ll know that my teammate’s churns are up. Etc.
The trick is in teaching your teammates to ‘Hold your churn" which you hear me state several times in the video. They’re still fighting, but they’re NOT using their earth element, which changes their play style drastically from a solo effort. This way, when the churn is called, they merely switch to earth and start casting (not waiting for the element cooldown).
For the door, it’s a lot easier. No pressure. Everyone stands behind the door being rammed. You start casting churning earth. You use the Lightning flash cantrip RIGHT before churn goes off to the spot inside the door being rammed. The AoE travels THROUGH the door (this is working as intended and not an exploit) in the same way that a catapult will hit the back side of the door and knock people off the ram.
4-5 elementalists hitting churn on the guy doing the ramming will knock him down ~20k health in an instant with 25 stacks of bleed. That sucker is going down. The ram will be down after the second or third attack.
Edit: Of course, I write all this out, and by the time that’s done the poster above has already answered everything :P

You can pop churning earth from BEHIND the gate and still hit people face rubbing it, no need to flash to the portal. The only time you’d really need to flash to the door is to nullify any splash damage coming through so you don’t get hit during the CE cast time.
I call this being “The Catapult”. Try your usual dps rotation without the air component AGAINST the door, you’d be surprised by how many damage numbers pop up. Things like burning speed, drake’s breath, ring of fire, cone of cold, earthquake and ring of earth WILL HIT THROUGH THE DOOR, I haven’t been able to confirm if knockdowns happen from Updraft/Earthquake yet or if Frozen Burst hit though.
Pretty fun to do while waiting for Mist Form to come off cooldown or wait for Downed State to drop away before hitting them outside again.

Welp, time to organize a team of elementalists to nullify any attacks to the gate.
(even better with a smaller group of focus elementalists, innit?)
For walls… Meh.
Now i’m scared churning earth is gonna get a nerf
New video.
Here’s how it looks when you get 5 elementalists stacking churns
It’s like you hate your Auras or something.

I swear thanks to KFC and Excala I can’t go more than two feet without bumping into a D/D leveler, hope this doesn’t spell the beginning of the end for those of us who’ve been around since day one.
How about X x ele and 1 x mesmer with portal.
Setup the portal in the enemies army and 4x churning earth through the portal

I tried this last night. With only three ele’s (including myself) and a mesmer, we managed to break several zergs and get into Stonemist.
It’s definitely a valid tactic.

I wouldn’t call this the beginning of the end, really. It looks powerful in the vids, but I’ve seen this live and all I had to do was warn my zerg about it, once people knew they started dodging, interrupting and stuff.. We could even kill the eles trying it because we knew they’d be throwing themselves on us. It’s a moderate risk tactic that pays off when you’re fighting unaware people.

On the other hand, if they had a mesmer among them to cast mass invisibility or a thief to use BP or Shadow Refuge…
BAM you guys are kittened
Though on the other hand, it would have to be coordinated and the “reward” is appropriate for the amount of coordination put in.
Of course, we have seen nerfs for lesser reasons before coughevasivearcanacough but yeah, while it’s not really an “op” tactic, expect the anet response. After all, they did say themselves that they only had like 2 people working on this stuff and none of them played an Ele.
You have to be in a really asinine zerg to get kittened by this, I mean, even if you do get hit, one healing rain should be enough to get you back on your feet… Don’t think anet will worry about it.
(edited by Dolores.5471)
The strategy is adequately rewarded for the teamwork involved, and not much more. It has incredible first-strike potential, but after the first 10 seconds DPS drops off drastically. So it really requires a Zerg or wall to fall in behind to recharge the cooldowns. But that being said—if used correctly, there’s no healin rain that will bring them back from where we will send them
Also, you may notice that sometimes we leave the downed ones up when they aren’t closely grouped together for AoE. This is because our second group is often a ranged group whose purpose is to finish off these single targets with focus fire.
(edited by KrazyFlyinChicken.5936)
Great strategy, but you you can honestly do this with any aoe burst. I’ve seen groups of thieves accomplishing similar feats with mass daggerstorm attacks.
It’s like you hate your Auras or something.
I switch elements right before the churn goes off to get 2 seconds of fury for it.
When my first churn hits, none of my elements are on cooldown to drop all the AoEs in an instant.
Doesn’t change the fact that you don’t use your Auras as often as you should. :p
I wouldn´t fret over nerfs anytime soon.
If LoD paintrain was anything to go by, such things aren´t frowned upon by devs.
I love fighting all of you ret D/D ele’s.
“Oh look, they are all winding up their churning earth.. better put an earthquake or an ice spike on myself and then dodge all of their synchronized earth churns!”
“oh that was easy”.
Was the RET guild in the invunerable spot behind redvale refuge in CD borderlands attempting this a few minutes ago? That was quite a hilarious try! I kept downing that ele commander but she would mistform back to the invu spot… Hope you recorded that.
Yesterday was fun
RET took Bay and the CD garrison at around 2PM PST.
By 11PM PST, KH logged on 20 guys and took it back.
By this point there were 5 of us guarding the keep… and when that fell, we guarded the camp.
And yeah – synch churns only really works well against zergs. I wouldn’t call it game breaking. As you said: Just dodge the darn thing. You’ll be a’ight!
(But last night we only had 2 eles and weren’t stacking them except on the keep door to defend it).
(edited by KrazyFlyinChicken.5936)
I don’t know if you played Shadowbane or not, but this is the same strategy we would use with Druid bombs and earthquake with a wizard portal. Was very awesome. The mayhem a group of Elementalists can perform by just riding lightning into a zerg ball is amazing too.
I’m surprised we don’t see more clone trains running around in this game where one guy controls 5 different people all following him along and they just assist train into everything.
The only thing this game is really missing is a raid interface.
Shadowbane got around this by using /tar for focus fire… but there’s nothing like that in GW2.
Our groups have to be organized into 5-man groups with a group leader calling targets.
When we run, I have to ask for group status first because I can’t see how many of them are down.
It was the whole reason I got the commander tag to begin with. I thought I’d be able to get a raid interface when people joined my squads.
I have only ever joined parties so the T targeting is all we ever use.
You aren’t seeing as much organization because its RvR. People aren’t obligated to join guilds or get organized. There isn’t much incentive to listen to a guild leader tell you what to do.
I would love to see an open pvp server that was centered around guilds. I’m still failing to see where “Guild” wars has anything to do with this game.
