Elementalist changes - October 7
Ghostly “We are best at nothing. That is all.”
Don’t say that, we’re still the best class at running away. Noone can catch us
awesome… </sarcasm>
Im tiered of being 2 shoted by ever class and having less damage out put and less opportunity to survive, class is broke
Ruin on Desolation
You don’t realize how weak elementalist AOE damage is until you play other classes
Although the glyph sucks because of the casting time, the effect itself is actually being toned down to other professions’ revive skills.
While it is true that other classes also aren’t able to revive defeated players, compare it to the Necromancer revive skill which essentially does the same as the Glyph of Renewal in earth attunement, but ADDITIONALLY grants a passive bonus and you see that it’s not brought down to the same level but a level below the other profession’s revive skills…

Apparently you haven’t used shadow refuge on a thief -_-
For whoever is going to play guardians and thieves now: those two professions were nerfed in this patch and, you know, everything points for more guardian/ thief/ mesmer nerfs in the future. Although the glyph sucks because of the casting time, the effect itself is actually being toned down to other professions’ revive skills. Also, outside of whirlpool’s justified nerf and bug fixes, elementalists haven’t changed at all. Unlike mesmers phantasms, guardian’s retaliation, thief’s pistol whip, ranger’s crossfire, which were all nerfed.
backstab thief wasn’t nerfed, quickness is untouched, rendering after breaking stealth is still laggy.

Guardians had their button layout changed for whatever reason and a few increased cool downs. Thiefs pistol whip took a 15% hit, but got a buff to BV. Mesmer took a huge, well deserved hit. They were kinda god mod.
Crossfire was actually buffed. I was reading on the ranger forum that crossfire would sometimes glitch out because (and I dont play a ranger so correct me if im wrong if any rangers read this) the skill would happen so fast between shots. A few shots wouldnt fire as they should.
They added the 40 milli second so the skill would stop glitching.
Its actually a buff….
Every single staff skill except burning retreat shows a cast bar now. Was it always like this?
It’s a little alarming to see how quick Arena Net are to make changes in the name of balance when they very rarely did it back in the original game. A lot of it reeks of the same mindset that plagues a certain other popular MMO.

Windborne Speed definitely was nerfed, I think lava font/gust were changed as well but I’m not 100% certain.

Can I have my skill points for Glyph of Worthlessness back? Renewal was already a poor choice for a utility skill no matter what your situation, now you are actively harming your party/team by using it — you could have been using that cast time to just kittening walk over there and pick them up from downed, rather than watching them die while you wind up a spell that will ultimately do nothing.
Good work on the Whirlpool nerf. Given that we have absolutely no choice in the matter of whether or not to use it as an underwater elite, can we have that slot unlocked to use normal utilities? Something that’s not trash? Please?
With all the problems elementalist has right now, it’s pretty great to see ANet making it even weaker. When the kitten are you going to fix warriors facerolling with Greatsword 2, eh? What’s that, never?
Gloom and doom! Elementalist is so terrible! ArenaNet obviously hates us!
Seriously, guys? Whirlpool was OP, and our water stuff is actually pretty decent for CC if you stance dance fast enough. Signets not hitting behind us just brings us in line with everyone else. The glyph probably needs some loving, though.
On the plus side…
“We’ve updated the camera to reduce the amount of camera smoothing currently in the game in order to lower the frequency of related bugs. We’re still looking into other camera issues, but we decided to make this quick change because it greatly improves the gameplay experience.”
We’ll have to see what this does, but this may help dramatically with targeting a lot of spells. If this does what I think, D/D will benefit greatly (fire 2/3/5, water 2, maybe earth 3).

No. Earth 3 will still see us spending a lot of time hanging in the air next to an enemy doing nothing like idiots while we get wailed on, Fire 3 will still not actually go towards the enemy you have targeted, but rather where you are moving instead. Elementalist is still going to be broken in some very fundamental ways, but at least it’ll stop killing people underwater.
It is ludicrous to be applying nerfs to this class, when it already has to attunement dance and pre-plan to excessive degrees to get anything done — meanwhile the warrior standing next to you is just drooling over his 2 key and outperforming you when his saliva completes the circuit. Glyph of Renewl nerfs, are you freaking serious?
I haven’t noticed a single bug fix so far either. Glyph of Elementals still shows it’s cooldown text instead of it’s duration text in PvP right after summoning it. That seems like a really easy thing to fix.

Progressively losing more and more faith about Anet being able to prioritize.

Just because they don’t prioritize based on YOUR belief on what comes first, doesn’t mean they aren’t doing it right.
You don’t know what they are working on, heck they already announced buffs for D/D ele coming.
Statements like this in my opinion are just pure ignorance.

Again, monk is looking pretty good. Since I hate faction favoritism and broken talent trees so that is saying something.
Personally, I like Fire 3 going toward where I have the camera pointed. I don’t want it going toward the target. It makes it easier to hit a group. The camera updates, though, may make it easier to aim.
Anyhow, I’m off to enjoy what is actually a great class with a few bugs WHICH THEY ARE UNDOUBTEDLY TRYING TO FIX (just be patient, geez — programmers are not wizards).
Ouch, reduced whirlpool damage? Really?
Ok, guess I’ll go back to hiding behind everyone else in any water fights and doing basically nothing. I want to believe they don’t just hate elementalists, but it’s getting harder and harder.
I’ve honestly given up trying not to believe that. The only other class on the bugginess plain that Ele lives on is Necro, and they just got a huge round of bug fixes.
What do we get? A fix to our buggy only underwater elite, which we didn’t even have in PVE period until recently, when our underwater damage is already horrible? Nope. A nerf.
You don’t need to be able to see your character, or not have your RTL make you a sitting duck while that Veteran whales on you when it fails to launch. Nope, you need to do even less damage, that’s what you need.
Starting to think ANet has backpeddled away from the idea of each class being able to do everything.. seems Ele is going to be delegated to supporting other damage dealing classes only at the going rate.
Re ‘Fire 3’ (Burning Speed): It doesn’t even always go in the direction your camera is pointing. Case in point: Yesterday I was facing a mob, I start to run up to it, I hit Burning Speed to pull it, and went directly backwards for absolutely no reason at all. This skill is so completely and utterly broken, it is likely multiple bugs in one. This isn’t even uncommon. I go in absolutely random directions all the time.

This right here is the whole crux of the outrage you’re seeing in this thread. Did whirlpool need a damage nerf? Yeah, probably, and I’d have been okay with that happening.
You know what I’m not freaking okay with? That damage nerf taking priority over fixing serious issues with this class that hamper its effectiveness.
Whirlpool is a long cooldown ability that is only usable in uncommon circumstances. Nerfing its damage should not be taking priority over having Ride the Lightning or Magnetic Grasp actually work at all.

^this. Lots of eles i know have switched to warrior- and loving how they provide a better aoe. Eles only outDPSes on large unmoving objects with a big surface area for aoes.

I have a warrior, and I’ve been facerolling PvE with axe’s. Its sickening
They have yet to keep their promises of being able to balance classes rapidly and effectively. Or even at all by the looks of it. I’ve stopped playing and now just check the forums for updates, it’s pretty sad. Losing so much respect for ANet. They need to get their crap together.
The official Elementalist forum song:
This thread will be closed in 3 pages. Enjoy your stay and come back in the next update notes!
Welp, that was the final bit of proof I needed that Anet doesn’t listen whatsoever. No faith left in them now. Ele deleted, rerolling something that actually functions.
When will the “Official guide: How to Play Your Elementalist as Powerful as We Designers Intended” be published?
I’m gonna order one.
So yeah… whatever else they may have done, the camera changes are amazing!!! Seriously guys, stop whining and go play the game. Mainhand dagger fire/water 2 breath spells actually hit. The verdict is still out on Fire Grab.
So I’ve been waiting for Elementalist, arguably the worst class in the game and the class I want to play the most, to get a buff before comitting to one. I eagerly opened today’s patch notes hoping that the day had arrived at last. And then I see a nerf. I am confused. Angry. Confused even more, but most of all deeply and bitterly disappointed. Didn’t you guys at ArenaNet pride yourselves in listening to the playerbase? It flies in the face of any kind of sense. This is what loss of faith must feel like.

They’ve already said they’re making changes to MH dagger and downed state, but we’ll have to wait a little until they are ready.
Can someone please post a link to these changes? I’ve been away from the forums for a couple of days and appear to have missed them.

It’s linked in the OP …

no, the changes arenanet said they would make for MH daggers and our downed state.

Whirlpool was OP. Nuff said. If you did not know that its because you never used it. At 33% reduction in damage, its more or less “balanced” now. Were talking underwater here, where most everyones damage is craptastic. It also currently lacks a noticeable animation, so its hard to see in combat and hit like a truck aoe. Blah blah bleh..
The nerf to GoR is rediculous though, and nonsensical. Anet refuses to talk to us little people that play this game, so well never know why they did this. We simply are not good enough for the Anet devs to stoop to any form of an explanation.

EDIT: Also, on the second page of this board (at the moment), there’s a topic about D/D with a red icon, where a dev has commented, stating that MH dagger and the downed state are getting some changes.
It’s just so funny that the game has been out over a month and this thread exists:
Patience regarding balance is one thing, they can’t find the time to deal with these many many bugs?
What bothers me isn’t that the list exists… it’s how little each of these weekly updates ‘fix’. Most other mmo’s resort to daily updates for the first couple of months that are each much bigger than one of their ‘weekly’ updates. I can’t begin to fathom a code base that’s so complex that it requires so much attention for such insignificant fixes…
in a month’s time we’ve gotten, what, fixes to all of our abilities shooting backwards? That’s pretty alarming…
At this rate nobody will be around when they finally get around to fixing the D/D. Why should we? This class sucks…. and then we got a nerf….. and then MORE nerfs…… and then some “bug fixes” that were really nerfs!!!!!
I see the importance of lowering the damage of Whirlpool but why did they have to prioritize it? We couldn’t even use it for weeks into final release, then it was our ONLY decent skill underwater, and then they nerfed it so it sucks just like everything else we have. I’m all for fixing balance issues but could they spend their time on the parts of the game that take place 97% of the time (above ground)?
And you know what? Who should even care about a change like the MHD? They won’t mention the bugged OH dagger or every other weapon that is even less balanced. MH dagger isn’t even our least balanced weapon. Everybody uses it so it must be our best. Why don’t we get fixes and balance fixed for our bad weapons first?
I’m very curious as to how their project management is… if i fixed bugs at the rate they did at work, i wouldn’t have a job for long >.<
Really? I can deal with the other skill fixes, but Anet, your description on glyph of renewal SAYS revive, not rally. I NEVER used that useless skill, until it actually did what the descriptor said. Suddenly, my water/earth support ele was fun and important to my group. It still had a big cooldown, that was ok, because it was fun.
Now, if glyph of renewal is really only supposed to get downed players up, it is not even worth it to use it. I would rather run and get them myself and have an open skill slot for one of the other skills.
Im kinda upset about the glyph of renewal fix. I had hope for a week or so, and now im back to square one.
@Chris
Your argument may hold water if half the kitten we talk about weren’t bugs. Bugfixes would go a long way to buffing the class. These bugs have been with us since beta in many cases, and no fix in sight. It seems to me they don’t give a kitten about bug fixing, or suggestions.
It holds even more water for the fact that there is an in game bug reporting tool and the fact there is already a thread about Ele bugs.
There is no need to clog the front page with nothing but complaints. I rather enjoyed when the forum had advice, videos, actual discussions on how to beat certain classes etc.
It would be nice to get them back there instead of a constant complaint fest.
Still doesn’t hold water. Most of the bugs have been here since beta, and none of them have been fixed. The backwards casting on signets? That kitten’s not even on that list.
There would be more advice and videos if people actually enjoyed playing the class. As it is, Earth 3 and Air 5 on Dagger bug out getting you killed half the time anyway. Who wants to see a video of that?

should apply 5 stacks but only applies 3
It’s because they aren’t bug fixes as far as I can tell. Looks like they are just changing their minds on attacking behind you and making it look like they are actually doing it. All of these types of fixes could have been done in a few minutes after the first one… unless of course their programmers are terrible at organizing code…. Really…. these aren’t bug fixes. Just Anet saying “oops guess we don’t want that so instead of fixing real bugs we will just pretend to spend time on these and list them as if they were real fixes”.

I’m going to have to agree with you, especially on the fixes involving traits… things like applying the cool down reduction to mistform should be such a mindless fix… It’s like they have ONE GUY fixing EVERYTHING.
Is a joke right ?
Where is the candid camera?
Wait, Ice Spike got nerfed? I don’t PvE, and I know that kitten ain’t used in PvP to any effect (people just walk away from it, even while chilled or crippled). Did it really need a nerf?
ANet’s not making any sense to me. Appeasement nerfs to Thief and Mesmer, no bug fixes to Ele, and one change to Necro. The two classes suffering most got nothing, and Ele even got nerfs?
You can be whoever you want, they said…
Liars.
Elems just can be nothing.
BIG SPS a-net, good job.
This entire patch needs to be revoked. None of the class balances make all that much sense. Care to explain Anet?
Just in case anyone forgot it’s there, check the stickied bugs thread at the top of the board. Read the two or three full posts full of bugs, many of which are pretty crippling for this class.
And with that in mind, wrap your brain around the idea that making sure our underwater damage was crappy was more important than fixing any of those.
Yea I tend to agree having some experience with this type of thing. You first have to get into the mindset of the game dev, which I have. Bugs suck to work on. Developing new code or hack and slash coding issues based on last minute design changes are always more fun to deal with because in most cases you dont go looking for the ramifications right away. You just make the change based on what is more surgical and has the least chance for creating bugs down the road in other places. Fixing bugs is tedious and boring and usually never easy. This is why the GoR nerf is nonsensical in this case. They have effectively made that skill totally worthless and assured that it will never be used in WvW or sPvP.
Why design and code a skill and then invalidate it later? What could possibly justify the huge loss of man hours involved with its initial coding? And, why the steady stream of Ele nerfs since BWE1?
To me anyway, it all points to bad design and lack of foresight. The people who bear the brunt of all of this poor management is the player base. Were the ones playing this class day to day, and being forced to live with the nerfs Anet appears to be randomly making. This class is not balanced and not ready for prime time yet. Same can be said of a couple other classes, and yet still, there are in fact some classes that overmatch an Ele on every front – offense, defence, mobility, and utility – but these are considered “balanced”, such as the Warrior and the Thief.
Too many unanswered questions here that need some explaining on Anet’s part. Things like why cant you remove people from groups after they go offline? Why cant Anet deal with the que issues? Why does the game lack in game things like a guild/alliance Calendar for event planning? Those are just a few small, but incredibly annoying things that all modern MMO’s do not have an issue with. Just this game. Untill that happens, welcome to the player base bleed that is happening, and will keep on happening.
