Ether Renewal versus Signet of Restoration?
Ether renewal is great for getting rid of a heavy cloaked immobilize, because it removes multiple conditions instead of just one.

The problem that I have with ether renewal in pve is that is less offensive, need to expend 3 seconds to heal, while with signet i never stop dps’ing and i never have to press the heal button. Although you could argue that having to switch to water and dodge roll in it could be considered a 3 sec cast heal so it might end up being the same. They both sound good.
Since in pve my condition removal comes from V in water it might be worth it to switch to ether renewal for condi removal and replace V with a more offensive trait, like 20% dmg in water when the mob has invulnerability. I guess it comes down to individual fights and taste.

I love Ether Renewal and have been using for quite a while. SoR is only good with a lot of healing power IMO.
You can absolutely use ether renewal instead of SoR. It’ll just take some getting used to if you’ve gotten used to SoR. Considering the cooldown, it has the highest healing output of the 3 heals. If you’re in situations where you want that higher healing output and can get away with the channels, ether renewal is a go.
If you’re running boon duration runes as many eles do, the glyph heal is quite good too. I’ve been using it lately.
They can all be used with D/D.

I love it, in pvp as well, people say im crazy but 10 secs less on healing is a lot, not to mention condition remove. You just need to time it right, i usually have a successful heal 95% of the time, some times i get interrupted due to some unexpected interrupt but that barely happens.
The only reason I use GoEH over Ether Renewal is because I’m traited for glyphs and getting 30sec of swiftness, regen or might or 14sec of protection from a 20sec recharge heal is just better.
ER is good to wash away all your conditions, it heals nearly the same as the glyph, recharges faster and while it is a channel, you can just use it when you need to back off. If you’d like, you can trait so ER quickly recovers a dodge as well (endurance recovery while channeling).
One advantage I found is that it removes conditions every pulse. This is particularity useful in PvP or WvW, because this prevent to get more conditions right after you cure them by other skills such as Cleansing Fire. Cleansing Fire removes 3 but it only 1 time thing, what if you get more conditions right after? ER keep removing for few seconds.
