Hi eles,

Is there a method to landing Fire Grab?

I haven’t been very successful landing it.

Also, when do you apply Churning Earth, if ever used. I’ve used it to bait people to leave radius for a while but I’m not certain that’s the most ideal method.

Fire grab is no doubt one of the hardest skills in the game to land on a moving target, all I can really say is practice definitely helps. Updraft > burning speed > fire grab is super predictable, so generally you should only use it if you know your enemy is out of stun-breaks, but if they are, you can land it easily. Or you can just pansy out and use it for cleaving downed bodies and anyone attempting to res, since they don’t move easy targets.

As for churning earth my advice is just never to use it aside from pre-stacking might before a fight. PVE calculations have shown you get more dps out of a fire rotation or even just spamming lightning whip. That makes it not worth using even before you consider the massive risk of being rooted for 3 seconds with all of your damage easily capable of being nulified with a single dodge/blind/block/interupt/etc. The skill is just high risk low reward.

Thanks ArthurDent. Makes sense for me to just pansy out and use Fire Grab to cleave downed instead of predictable rotation. Don’t like wasting anything with a 45/30s traited cd.

Huge relief I’m not alone on how bad Churning Earth is. I just couldn’t find an ideal situation for it in combat.

PS: feedback from those two skills (plus other player suggestions) resulted in the overloads. lots of people suggest to add pulsing damage to churning earth’s channel. instead they gave us pulsing damage on the overloads’ channels. fire grab is hard to hit because they can run right through you, canceling the cast. the overloads are AoE’s centered on you (and so are the shouts), so that the casts can’t be cancelled so easily, and they don’t require a target, or to be facing said target either.

Interesting history on the skills in question, now I know whey theyre wonky. Took a break from game and haven’t played ele since 2013.

Your best method for landing fire grab IMO (with out hoping for a updraft combo in your favor) is to either magnetic grasp and follow up with a fire dodge roll + fire grab or get good at timing shocking aura stun with fire grab + cleansing fire (if no burns applied yet). Sometimes using shocking and quickly swapping to drakes breath works but since most d/d will run blinding ashes build this method wont always work in your favor.

just use fire grab after drake’s breath. people will wait for burning speed to dodge so they won’t see fire grab coming. the damage is also higher when the target is burning. tbh landing fire grab is easy as long as you don’t do drakes, burning speed, ring, fire grab because at one point they will dodge and that’s when you’ll miss the skill.

as for churning earth, forget that skill exists.
