Fireball nerfed?
Staff ele too OP.

but balanced. For now, we do not expect it to see serious use.” – ANet
We are obviously overpowered. too many thieves and mesmers are dying while standing in our aoes pressing their one key over and over, so it needed balance.
Dat dartboard balancing.
… or we could answer his question?
on Nov 15 they released an update that corrected a lot of tooltips that were portraying skills as being more powerful than they were.

a lot of people were upset about this update either because they thought a lot of skills were nerfed for no good reason or because they thought anet took the easy way out of fixing a problem. i think both are pointless arguments based on rage/assumptions

They actually were nerfed for no good reason. Most ranged weapons used to be stronger until the devs realized that there was an issue of risk vs. reward for ranged weapons, so a lot of them got nerfed, especially autoattacks.
What they didn’t really think out was that some classes need to be able to operate fully at long distance because of attrition issues. This is the main reason the staff feels so underwhelming right now.

Thanks for trying to actually answer my question. I guess it was probably similar to that Nov 15 tooltip update, but it’s just not mentioned anywhere in the patch notes for our last update for some reason.
Just to be clear though, the change to fireball happened in the last major patch, not the Nov. 15 one if that’s what you were implying.

huh, wu-do-ya-know. it’s been known for some time that fireball has a radius of 90 units, so i guess i just forgot that it’s tooltip hadn’t been corrected.
i just checked the history of the fireball page on wiki and you are correct, the erronius description was not changed until May 7 (funfact: there seems to be a silent revert war going on about it)
i guess since the change wasn’t in the patch notes nobody noticed and therefore the wiki took a while to be updated. (and when it was updated it looked like a troll changing a random fact for no reason)
EDIT: it also doesn’t help that a LOT of staff eles use the ‘Balsting Staff’ (arcana viii) trait which widens the area of most staff spells. fireball specifically is increased to 120.

Does any staff ele not take Blasting Staff? It’s hard enough to hit enemies with the freakin’ trait.
sigh i was being optimistic when hoping this argument wouldn’t come up.
read the OP carefully and you will realize that the number is not 100%
also every time the subject of ‘everybody uses/does-not-use X’ the few who don’t follow this trend will arrive in droves to argue that it’s not that good/bad and people will get into endless, highly circular debates where all the pertinent facts are stated within the first 5 posts.
this describes EVERYBODIES midset pretty kitten well during this sort of argument. (just read the first few lines)
I only noticed that the range was fixed, since it was longer than it was supposed to be in the first place, but that’s about it.

Ah alright thank you for clearing that up. I do happen to use blasting staff (though I don’t staff much anymore), so I just assumed it didn’t affect fireball.
As for the wiki edits, there wasn’t a revert war, they’re all from my IP if you look at the editor :p I just accidentally changed the area back to 120 when I decided to change the “Area of effect” symbol with a “Radius” symbol so it’d match the in game description.
