My only problem with shatter based mesmers is that they are squishy, although you can counteract that by planning out all your moves in advance. I know what a mesmer is capable of doing at its full potential, and I haven’t really had any trouble taking one down. Taking a tanky elementalist on the other hand just doesn’t sit well and neither side wins.

My point here is that a shatter mesmer is prone to dying much more readily than what I run on my elementalist against highly skilled opponents. At the same time, a mesmer can deliver a much higher burst. So there is a trade off between survivability and DPS, which is not really a suprise.
Although my DPS is lower than bursting mesmers, there are many ways you can enhance your bursting DPS as an elementalist. These could include pre-emptive might stacking, swapping weapons before combat starts, using underwater CC’s on land, FGS fire trail bursting with walls or teleports, exiting and swapping to arcane blast/wave.

My biggest peeve is to be able to handle any situation I come across, or at least survive from it. Mesmers don’t offer as much flexibility as the elementalist when it comes to this vs. very high skilled opponents. Most of the time mesmers win due to a combination of skill, and a lack thereof skill from the opponent (you’ll see this when enemies wander around whacking clones when the real mesmer goes invisible). People just don’t know how to predict a mesmer’s location upon stealthing/unstealthing, or re-targeting to the real one.

My last peeve is being useful in a team fight. A D/D elementalist does a great job drawing aggro in large fights, can dish out incredibly large amounts of DPS using the fiery great sword, and can actually harass an escaping zerg army / cut it in half through cripples on the FGS 3rd ability. A mesmer can do similar feats using Glamour mass confusion on an army, but again doesn’t have the survivability that I like to handle any situation.
When a situation gets too tough, I leave the battle with ride the lightning. For a mesmer, when the battle gets too tough, you pray that someone doesn’t know how to recognize stealth/unstealthing right off the bat, or go all out and hope that someone doesn’t know how to dodge a spike.

I’d rather have squishy with an ability to burst than tanky with no ability to burst. Tankier builds tend to be kinder to newer players, then the better you get, the more glass cannon you can build (this is due to numerous things like understanding how to use your skills for defense instead of relying on your armor, understanding how enemies play, understanding other class skills, etc). With an Elementalist, there is no glass cannon build that isn’t total failure, so this progression doesn’t exist. You’re stuck with a tank and as your skill increases, you rely on turtling less and less without gaining the damage you’d normally gain from going more and more glass cannon. This creates a disparity between your skill and your damage output that causes you to get walled by certain classes.

As for using might to make your attacks hit harder, that only goes so far. My ele with a berserker amulet and 20 stacks of might on a burning enemy critting a fire grab will only deal a max of around 8k~12k. My mesmer with her shatter combo will deal 12k~20k+. If you find a glass cannon elementalist build that is actually playable, I’ll definitely hear you out, but this bunker nonsense is a big no-no for me. It lowers the skill cap which is never good.

Daphoenix at first i would like to thank you as many others did here, about the effort u put to keep answering and updating this great post.

I use the same 0/10/0/30/30 traits as many here but i like the more balanced stats and to be able to do some dmg so i play with t h i s setup and switch the ring for an all stats one and earrings for berserkers when i want more dps.

I enjoy to be able to charge a grp, dps, knock them down, confude their lines and be able to get out of there, while my grp is clearing around.

Here is a video i recorded before few days were we managed to stand against 2 server grps while we were caping a camp with a buffed supervisor :P

I am just wondering whether this build is currently still optimal. I haven’t been following patches particularly closely but have found out about the nerfs to RtL, Soothing Disruption and Zephyrs Boon. Are there any changes that should be made to the build?

On a side note thank you very much for the unbelievable guide that makes the learning curve with a new toon a lot less steep. I am sure a large chunk of the elementalist community owes you a lot.

Just run the same setup and go for berzerker weapons. Sometimes I swap out my knights weapons for berzerker to get ~50% critical damage and ~50% crit chance (with fury on). My attack power can go up to 3800 depending on might, stacks, etc, so I can still burst pretty high if I sacrifice some toughness.

To your arguement on glass cannon: Glass cannons are limited to only so many people though, you tend to short change yourself when fighting many good opponents at once. Sure you can burst someone down in a 1v1 situation using a more GC orientation, but my perspective is surviving any situation, and preparing for the worst case scenario is more important. Plus building more tanky allows you to prepare burst options much readily – aka building might using fire aura, combo stacks, and fiery great sword bursting.

FrownyClown.8402
I am immobilized in that video all the time, its just that I specced anti-immobilization in that video by sacrifcing swiftness and DPS. That and I am also abusing LoS and evasion very heavily as well

Penuil.3679
I guess whatever makes you happy:]. Personally I like going all +stats, b/c I like being well rounded. Healing power, vitality, and condition damage are all still useful stats to have on you.

nealpatel.3406
:D
The current build in use is still optimal 0/10/0/30/30 for any weaponset, and in most scenarios. I opted to go for a 0/0/10/30/30 or a 0/0/20/20/30 spec since I really like the 33% reduce CC effect trait, and the free armor of earth at 50% HP trait. The only downside is no perma swiftness and fury, but I’ve gotten accustomed to controlling fury on attunement swap to burst, and chaining swiftness by using staff out of combat / using pots. It takes alot more skill to use this spec correctly since no perma swiftness is a bummer, and having less swiftness can get you killed.

On my latest video episode 12 I used this spec I made:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcprP81h4dk
Setup
20 Earth -> 50% Armor of earth trait, 33% reduce CC trait
20 Water -> 50% fall damage reduction, Cantrips provide vigor and HP reg
30 arcana -> Evasive arcana, Arcana five and six
Superior sharpening stones, Lemongrass poultry
2x superior rune monk, 2x superior rune water, 2x superior rune melandru

^This is my secret spec I use but I haven’t been on much and I’ve already had my fun with it so I’ll share it with you guys. Its far superior to the 0/10/0/30/30 at its full potential (example in episode 12). Plus its an extremely strong counter to confusion mesmers anyways, and they are kind of OP atm (mesmers are kind of a joke using this setup too :P).

I also now actually think about my attunements much more now using this spec, i.e. earth for protection when I expect upcoming damage, staying on water as short as possible, staying on air as short as possible to upkeep swiftness, staying on fire whenever available.

I feel like doing videeo game reviews in the future and making a gaming blog that I never got around to doing, what do you guys think? :S. Also going to teach myself programming in various languages, starting with C, and maybe make some user guides in the future as well. Can’t decide on whether I should make future video content more depth vs. breath either.
Debating on what I should do with future content on youtube, any suggestions? :P

Oh I get the reasoning why you want more power, we do after all run the same spec (more or less). I guess it’s just preference to have a bit more power, or slightly higher crit chance.

I know, I love T2 as well with TC, but I’m stuck here in T1 and I want to fight you! I have a hard time finding fights like the ones you post here, because everyone is running here with 10+ people. And if i do find some stragglers or small groups they’re all thieves. I’ve literally run into a group of 4-6 thieves. I occasionally run onto some other classes, but it quickly escalates into a 1v20 (or the other way around and my fellow servermates show up) with more people popping up out of nowhere, and I either run or just die.

I am jelly.

I’m going to make a video this weekend detailing my builds / video, and then progressively work toward the basics – > advanced techniques in later videos.
It’s going be a super duper long video series about elementalist strategy

Feel free to pm me when I’m on though (same applies to everyone else)

Raif.9507
It definitely does take awhile to find a good fight. I usually go through many video feeds before I find one suitable to upload, because most battles end in me dying, or end prematurely b/c an ally group intervenes. Then there’s the times where the battle is too easy, and doesn’t challenge me enough so I don’t post it.

I like videos emphasizing strategy as opposed to just flashy combat. Its more thrilling to have a continuous video where your on the blink of death many times, as opposed to many clips of victories.

I’ve had my run ins with groups of 3 thieves at a time before as well. Its all about keeping the thieves at bay with CC’s if they are going dagger/dagger. Dodge whenever you see an incoming heartseeker spam. For Pistol/Dagger thieves, utilize line of sight to your advantage. I like to predict when a thief will unstealth and attempt to burst me in combat, and chain that with shocking aura / earthquake. Its always also a good idea to pan your camera around while fighting so you won’t be suprised when an army is behind you.

I think the biggest challenge to roaming as an elementalist is map/terrain awareness, combined with knowing when to run away. Running away is always important :]

@ Swarly – Yea this build is perfectly viable in PVE. The wonder of the build is that it makes you very survivable and deal good damage (depending on the boons youve got). It leaves you to decide on the gear you want. You can go all knights gear with Valkyrie accessories so you can have some health. I use a mix of PVT and berserkers and cavalier gear to make it very damage oriented (74% crit damage, 2.9k attack, 2.6k armor, 30% crit). It lets you have a variety of gear to suit your tastes.

I’m currently using the 0/10/0/30/30 build in full exotic knight’s gear and working my way towards the accessories you’re using. I mostly do PvE but also do WvW from time to time. The current build easily destroys most PvE stuff but i do have some difficulty with confusion mesmers when i’m in WvW. I’m really tempted to try the 0/0/20/20/30 build. My question is, do you notice a significant drop in your dps without the 25 water trait? And does this build work as well in PvE as the 0/10/0/30/30 one? I’ll kind of miss the aura sharing and swiftness, (not as much as my teammates will though) but if it means being able to last longer when i’m alone it seems worth it.

There’s nothing wrong with helping others – at least Daphoenix spotted a need and decided to share what he knew.

Plenty of MMO’s have guides with players helping other players. Most players that use them usually adapt them to their own playstyles anyway.

What do u guys think about the alternate setup of 0/15/10/15/30?
I know u lose some cond. removals but u get some free toughness + armor of earth and another good “nuke” on switching to air. The downside is that u lose the boon +% dmg but with more crit dmg I think that you can compensate that. (I do not know the in game maths! xD)

Can we stop bumping this thread? Been having a d/d build (not close as similar as this except probably the 30 on water) since first week of open beta. Back then I was one of the few eles that even used d/d for pvp. Now is annoying seeing if not all, most of the eles using only this weapon set and what’s worst using this exact build. It is a shame seeing so much dmg potential wasted because everyone is doing this bunky build dealing mediocre dmg even with blast finishers effects.

So… You don’t want people to use D/D or.. you just don’t think this build is good enough compared to yours?

How about you make an in-depth guide about your build (since you consider it to be better), let people be fair judges and then we can bump your thread instead..

Unless you of course don’t want people to know your build or want people to play D/D, then maybe… you shouldn’t leave comments like this.

I mean no offense, I’d really like to see what build you consider being a successful dps D/D/ build. But if you’re here just to blurt out how you were the pioneer among eles with D/D, ditching a good and detailed guide, without sharing what so good about your own build, it will just sound as someone being kitten for not getting any recognition.

Here’s my most recent video if you haven’t seen it already describing my spec I currently run, in detail with traits ,armor, etc. It also describes the 0/0/20/20/30 spec mentioned earlier, and alternative traits you may want to change around

FrownyClown.8402
4% crit damage and 20 + all stats doesn’t compare to -10% cond duration imo.

Swarley.8642/Raif.9507
Yes it does work perfectly fine in PvE :]. The 0/10/0/30/30 is great with aura share to help out your teammates. My current 0/0/20/20/30 spec allows me to survive longer in team battles due to its higher defensive spec. You can alternatively increase your DPS by swapping knights weapons for berzerker weapons, and you can also swap out +all stat rings for power, precision, crit dmg.

Like Raif said, you can keep the exact same trait setup, but change the gear you run for more DPS and tankiness :]

Cariyah.1429
I put in the guide and the video link at the top of this response :]

Liquid Swords.1740
I started using lemongras poultry and melandru post -nerf on omnomberry pies. They were food buffs that healed you @ 300 HP every 66% chance on cirt, with no limit on AoE, or procs.

The 83% immobilization reduction is awesome too! Mesmers with their blurred frenzy spike ave a 2 second immobilize, and reducing it down to ~0.3seconds allows you to walk off any of those spikes.

kubetz.3058/EraSer.5013
:D +1 for answering question. I recommend a 0/10/0/30/30 setup for staff as well EraSer.5013. Blasting staff from arcana tree is also another trait to take as a staff user.

Nikkinella.8254
That minor 25 water trait (2% dmg per boon) is signifcant. On average, I’ll have 5 boons up in battle, equating to 10% more damage which is a lot. That is the main downside of the 0/0/20/20/30 build, in addition to swiftness/fury problems.

zerotwo.4731
No problem !

There’s always the option to change into DPS gear while maintaining the same traits :]
Having a bunch of players running D/D is not necessarily a bad thing, it helps the game balance itself at a much faster pace leading to better balance progression.

Supasilvafoxy.1247
Well said!

Whizzy.5723
I haven’t really thought too much about that combination of specs, but it definitely does sound plausible. Have the Water trait granting regneration + vigor on cantrips, the Air trait granting fury +swiftness on aura, and earth for → 50% HP = armor of earth. Then combine the condition removal downsides with lemongrass + 2 x avatar rune of melandru:P.

This spec would definitely be great for 1v1 or small team battles purposes, due to the minor air 15 trait, and high defenses from the earth trait Not so much for large battles though, which is my playstyle :]

I think in the end it all comes down to personal preference. There are still many peeps around who do the math and say build x > build y coz of math stuffs but in the end it all depends on the player. You wont be successful if ur gameplay is crappy lol.

I will try some builds. I will play D/D for most cases and will switch to staff for high lvl fractals coz I guess it’ll be better for ranged attacks and support. Therefore I can do a lot of stuff. I will try S/D as well to compare it to D/D playstyle but since D/D is a very versatile and does have answers in all situations it the best jack-of-all-trades build.

sure it depends on his play skill but also on his ability to create good builds. What kills ele are all forms of immobilise – and daphoenix just created a build that minimizes this problem drastically almost to the point where I am inclined to state that this is OP This time for real its it OP build – congratulations. In response aNet probably will nerf the food.

I’m still running 0 15 0 25 30 in spvp with divinitys and zerkers. Can beat most 0 10 0 30 30 eles I find. I’ve also ran a selfish aura s/f build that beats 0 10 0 30 30 eles with zerkers but dies with carrions (the one I use to be everything else lol). I have won a few matches v 0 10 0 30 30 with paper cannon build s/d, but it is such a pain in the but, if you miss dragons tooth and phoenix you are dead.

Another good build is the 25 sec burning fiery axe s/d build my friend runs (can’t rememebr the details). It beats my 0 15 0 25 30, 0 10 0 30 30 and original 0 0 10 30 30 builds 100% the time, it utilizes aether heal to full effect.

I also find the fire axe /condi /tank build to be very effective in 1v1 pvp. I can not beat counter necro with it but everything else is win or draw.
The thing is that pve, wvw, pvp are three totaly diferent playgrounds. For trolling wvw zergs containing mostly mob class players newest daphoenix build is perfect while in tpvp or pve there are better options.

> coz of math stuffs but in the end it all depends on the player

sure it depends on his play skill but also on his ability to create good builds.

Yes, it does. I’m not used to play MMOs, tbh GW2 is the 1st real MMO I’m playing for a long time. I’ve played almost every MOBA out there for a LONG time before coming to GW2. And the difference between good and bad players in MOBA is easily to see how often they die. Killing people/creeps isnt hard tbh. Everyone can do it. But to survive is more important. I rather lack a lil bit dmg output but still be able to take some shots then falling down like a glass cannon. Since D/D DMG output is made by constantly pressuring ur enemy it doesnt really matter if u only hit for 3.5k or 2.8 k. These 700 DMG doesnt win u games. But dealing a lot of dmg over time by NOT dying wins it. Having reduced CC is godlike. It always was in MOBAs as it it in MMOs. Having some immunity as and some free armor is also as well very good. Since I like playing pesky bruisers D/D with a kinda tanky build seems to be the way to go.
The Problem is that I dont wanna miss at least 10 Air because mobality is waaaaay to good. Going 0 0 20 20 30 does have this problem. I acknowlede the fact that that 20 earth is a beast but there must be another possible way.
I think that people shud learn to copy “classic” builds. 0 10 0 30 30 is a beast. But many people think it’s only good coz of the dmg of water 25. Boons on its own are very awesome. Having 10% more dmg when 5 boons are up are also nice to have. But are they mandatory? I doubt it. Being more tanky and having more cc reduction are WAY stronger than these + % of dmg. Like I said. When I deal 3 k dmg and have + 10% then 3.3 k dmg…c’mon who cares about 300 dmg when you have this much survival that u wont die in a blast?
Getting some points into earth is way stronger. If u feel that u need more life u can still get some vit by equipment and jewelry.

In the end it’s like I say. Personal preference. These are my opinions about some stuffs. And I will try to make a solid build on my own. daphoenix is a very good player (concering playstyle and builds) and he and his thread gave me tons of ideas to try things out. For me I have to try the best balance between: Armor, Life, DMG, Heal Power, Mobility, CC-Reduction, Boons. I’m not the one speccing into cond. dmg. Since it can be cleared by many classes and since real dmg > cond. dmg any time (IMO).

Thinking about this already like 6 hours. I have to try it when I’m in game again.
I like Evasive Arcana. But lets be honest. Do u guys “spam” dodge rolls all over? Most of the time it’s more situal and you arent going to “waste” endurance for nothing, so most time u use roll to dodge or to heal when attuned to water. I know that you can have other effects on dodge rolls BUT most of the time u use Evasive Arcana for quick heals which are awesome.
Now about my thoughts. 0 10 20 20 20 OR 0 15 20 15 20.
When you have more armor and be more tanky DO u need the heal of evasive arcana? I dont think so. Reducing DMG Vs. more heals.
When u get massive cc-reduction with Earth + Melandru + Food do u need these many cond. removals? CC-Reduction Vs cond. removals. (Does cc-reduction also affect bleed, burn, confusion and poison? Or is it only good against stun, cripple, chilled and imobilized?) This thought includes 15 in air + 15 in water.
Another cool thing is that u can take armor of earth over cleansing fire. Double Armor of earth + MORE DMG reduction thx to it? I kinda feel like a steamroll, lol.

I cant even say which one is better because in the end everything seems to be viable. xD Just another idea I’m looking forward to hear ur opinions about it.

One last thing. I rarely use my elite skill. I simply dun like em. They all aren’t this strong. I do know that u can use Fiery GS for some other escape methods but they aren’t mandatory IMO. I also dislike tornado. Summoning stuff might be o.k. for PvE action but in WvWvW and sPvP/tPvP it’s not really reliable. I haven’t tested it but I guess in higher fractals summoning an elemental wont get u anything as well. Racial skills are another option but playing as an asura my elite are really limited.

PS: Sorry for my english. I know it’s not the best.

@ Whizzy
While the tanky 0 10 0 30 30 doesn’t benifit too much from 10% damage, the build I run does. I see where you are comming from though, and might rethink my traits. 10% extra damage for the whole fight with zerkers is alot of extra damage but there are some air traits I could look at for the extra 5.

0 15 0 25 30 Bezerkers, Divinities, Rest Sig, Cleansing Fire, Frost Bow, Lightning Flash, Fiery Great Sword of Great Justice.

1k on switching to air = 1.1k on switching to air. Thats no much, but my Churning Earth does it for 10k and fire grab is no push over (oh wait it is, just strafe left and right and it will miss).

I have been planing on making a switch from 25 water to 20 water and 20 air (bolt to the heart) which is a good boost for 25% of the fight, but most people are bunkers or die anyway so 10% sustained over the full duration of the fight is fine for me.

My build is quite an interesting one, it combines the defenses of the traits with the offense of zerkers and the weapons. This forces other bunkers into a defensive position early in the fight (taking half their health before the stand up usually forces them to blow water) then I can hit them with MG into CE for 9-11 k and gg.

@Lavadiel
Have you seen Luilas ingame, the fiery axe build is the one he likes to run. Its always fun to watch him design a build from scratch (takes a good hour or so) then run it once or twice, make a few tweaks and basiclly have something that can beat almost anything I run.

The builds he runs look exactly the same as the ones on the forums. We both made a signet aura build and the next day I was searching around for the forum build to see if I could improve my own and lol and behold it was already pretty much the same.

Me and him worked on a staff heal build before launch, then made it when he started playing. It was bassicly the OP staff build, very strong, till I told him about the EA bug. Then he was undefeatable. He would tank 3-5 people in spvp and only go down to the random theif comming in halfway.

I’ve been playing D/D in PvP and in PvE Lvl 1-80. Everytime I switch to another weapon I feel like playing a much weaker, less versatile, slow class xD
It’s sad that I have to get a staff for higher lvl fractals and other stuff coz I’d stick to D/D 24/7 everywhere ^^ It’s simply 2 gud.

>then run it once or twice, make a few tweaks and basiclly

is pvp this game is still quite strong build-counterbuild oriented. If you know what your opponent plays you can counter it. Ofc avoiding you opponent best attack while assuring that your best attack/strategy "hits" is also essential.

>only go down to the random theif comming in halfway.

properly build GC thief executioner is ideal for finishing the fight. DA5,15,25, mug, panic strike, CS5,15,25, Furious Retaliation, Executioner makes that even at range 450+900 you just press HS and steal and target is in downstate - ofc only when the target was already fighting someone and his hp was ~50%. This is the best (quickest) finisher in the game and its obious that your tank friend died to this.

Daphoenix, a begginer question.

I’m just building my mesmer and one thing that I don’t understand, when looking at mesmer shatter builds, is that almost no one is using “Shattered Concentration” (shatter skills remove a boon on hit). With the typical shatter build 20/20/0/30 that should be mandatory, right? So, what I’m missing here?

Learning English, any correction is very welcome.

Btw guys. Ele is my only character so far. I simply love these classes with high mobility and decent dmg + survival. I dun like having tons of survival like a guardian does have, I simply wanna have a nice balance.
What other class does have a similar plays like D/D ele? For the next class I will opt some day. ^^ I’m thinking about thief or mesmer. Both can dish out good dmg by having survival mechanics(invisible and clones and stuff). Since I like roaming a lot I guess thief might be the better choice. What do u think?

I am aiming towards this and only level 25 at the moment, but it’s really fun. I am slowly getting the hang of constantly changing attunements too.

Regarding the OP’s main build- I was wondering if dropping the trait to remove a condition when switching to water and replacing with the one that reduces the cooldown on catrips would be a better idea, or is the first trait better?

I am looking forward to being a higher level so I can get some more points and play the build to its fullest.

Thanks a lot for the guide.

I dislike staff too. In higher fractals, I like using Scepter/Dagger. You gain range, you don’t sacrifice your Earth 5 (which you sometimes have to start casting from range, and blink in close range), you still have great water utility and even gain a heal with Water 3, and fire attunement stacks might like crazy with 2 blast finishers (and a 3rd instant if you use Arcane Blast as utility).

I’m on lv 14 fractals now and barely have to range anything yet. I’m going to try to get as high as possible by using daggers as much as possible. It’s the most fun playstyle to me and it’s why I actually started elementalist (before seeing this build)

@Bubbles: you can have even more might stacks. Ring of Fire > Dragon’s Tooth > Phoenix > Earth > Dodge roll > Earthquake and finally Arcane Blast

What makes EA so strong is that you can use it in every attunement direct after each other. There’s only an ICD with every attunement. I started noticing when my heal from water went off right after I blasted with earth to stack might. I tested it out more and it’s like that.

Just wondering how you are getting 9 stacks of might? I’m running the last spec listed and I am not getting near that many. It would be nice to have the stacks like that and would improve my dps output.

Is that because of condition duration on the gear?

Its the combination of the Superior Sigil of Battle and Boon Duration runes and the boon duration you get from the Arcana tree.

That combination when you swap attunements in combat gets you the stacks of might.

Countering Thieves

From a thief to an ele, let me make a few adjustments for you. Feel free to copy+paste, whatever you need to do.

- Remove 7: Downed State. Simply because thief downed state is pretty awful, and there isn’t much of a point behind having it in the guide (unless you’re targeting, specifically, brand new players who have no idea what the kitten they’re doing)

- Remove parts about P/D thieves, replace with D/P thieves. P/D tends to be much more uncommon nowadays, and even beforehand, it was more of an overly passive build that I honestly had no respect for. On the other hand, D/P is becoming an increasingly common spec. What you can expect from D/P is:
- A lot of blinds
- A combo field that blinds you if you stand in it. Also, the combo field allows for thieves to HS→Stealth, so be prepared for that.
-Tends to rely more on HS than regular D/D builds would
- A bit more of a “tanky” thief build, but still one where you might want to watch out for Backstabs, as they can still really, really hurt.

-Just emphasize “spam AoE/PbAoE” when Shadow Refuge is thrown down. Typically, thieves can do little or nothing about damage you do to them when they’re in SR, and, 99% of the time, thieves will spend the entire duration of SR just sitting there, waiting to max out stealth. If there aren’t any nearby enemies threatening to kill them, they’ll typically just stand in the center, but otherwise they’ll stand closer to the edge of the circle to avoid getting hit. I would say that this makes Lightning Whip most useful, because it hits the entire radius around you, while other skills don’t have that option. Also, because LW is so powerful, that gives you yet another reason to use it.

Also… I can’t guarantee this, but I would imagine that Air 5 would be extremely useful against thieves. Few things annoy me more than standing in a SR, only to be pushed out by Mesmer GS 5, which slams revealed on me and makes it impossible to gain any other stealth benefits from SR. Similarly, I believe that Air 5 might pushback thieves, which would be a real pain, to say the least. I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work.

That would be my advice for now, PM me or comment if you want more explanation for the Ele vs Thief matchup.

:D glad you appreciate it

Whizzy.5723
Your right it is pure preference. My preference is the most versatile reliable build possible that can handle any situation

Lavadiel.6231
I’m aware of how OP the ele is, it takes someone to be really blindsighted not to realize that. That being said, confusion damage in WvWvW is also seriously OP as well, AND it is a direct counter to elementalist, while still performing questionable AoE feats as well.

The reason why confusion damage is rather broken in WvWvW is because, there’s no damage negation to it. Sure you can avoid casting spells, but the elementalist can “casts” several spells within a span of 2 seconds, i.e. through dodge rolls (2 spells per dodge, with EA), attunement swaps, auras, etc. Its pretty easy to obtain 8 (or up to 12) stacks of confusion from either a mesmer or engineer, at 400 damage per spell (3.2k damage total per skill use). I’ve had times where I’ve instantly killed myself without being able to react b/c I was confused right before performing an attunement swap EA dodge roll (3 spells in one dodge, up to 10k damage taken penalty → that imo is ridicolous. I shouldn’t have to take a 10k damage penalty for not reacting to one condition in the heat of battle, and making one bad dodge roll attunement swap). I don’t even know why a dodge (not referring to EA) is even considered a spell, because its not.

The real culprit imo is lemongrass food, rare veggie pizza, confusion damage and confusion damage’s AoE limit cap with glamour fields. Like I said earlier, eles are OP, but so are these mentioned above. If you nerf one, you’d have to nerf its’ associated buffs / counters for balance reasons.

PvP is a different story though. Elementalist are slightly on the OP end, but not so much due to all the healing nerfs (50% on EA water dodge roll, 50% on water ripple, boon duration reduction, etc). Confusion damage not so much either, 50% damage reduction there as well.

TGSlasher.1458
I tried S/D, I’m not a big fan of unreliable dragon’s tooth, even if you don’t have to use it. Air1’s attack as a reliable damage dealer is not for me either, since I am really big into blindsighting an enemy with LoS, either with terrain or weaving into their avatar back and forth on their backside.

I’m not really sure what this fiery axe build your referring to is. Fiery axe is a conjure, and it does offer a mediocre ranged attack.

Lavadiel.6231
Necros are hard to beat, because there aren’t as many noticeable animation cues as that of a mesmer, or thief. Their DPS is no joke either, alongside with the ability to turn your boon’s against you, and your conditions as well.
You have to be unpredictable vs. a good necro, and utilize terrain to your advantage to win.

I use a different setup in sPvP. 0/10/0/30/30 or 0/15/0/25/30 is still superior for sPvP builds.

Evasive arcana is our best trait, for the water dodge roll. Having a free condition removal +2k heal every 10 seconds is very significant. It also eliminates the need to have to cast an additional heal as well, and offers lots of versatility in combat. Imo evasive arcana is a must have for a D/D ele.
For S/D and staff, that is debatable though, since you are at a much further distance generally when attacking your enemy, and don’t need to dodge as often/ take damage.

TGSlasher.1458
0/15/0/25/30 is definitely a great setup for a glass cannon GC spec. I would argue against going pure berserker gear though, since going into melee generally means you will take damage in mostly every situation.
I’m not sure why you chose frostbow in that setup with a GC spec. I know it offers ranged oppurtunities when you can’t go into melee range without dying, but thats what fiery GS is for. I’m not sure how much great frostbow’s damage is either.

I’m still all for ether renewal though, instead of sig of restoration. Since you are all DPS, it does make sense that you would want the sig’s passive heal while maintaining DPS in combat, over having to cast a spell. The only problem with the setup you have there is condition removal, and defense.

Whizzy.5723
You can run D/D in mostly every scenario, but running staff is just much more faceroll easier to do in fractals.

Lavadiel.6231
Thieves can finish anyone at 50% hp, by burning additional utilities to finish the job. In my opinion, they are balanced as is due to the quickness nerf, which solves the keyboard 1 click macro 1.5 second 15k burst move. Now its probably at ~2 seconds, which is more than enough time to react.
Note that higher tiered thieves don’t use this cheesy strategy because its a one time deal, with a long CD associated with it.

Ryn.6459
The problem with running a trait specifically for removing boons with shatter is that not everyone runs a whole lot of boons. The elementalist of course runs several types of boons, and so do guardians. For other classes, removing a boon does not affect them as much as the elementalist. Elementalist’s rely heavily on boons to survive, other classes not so much.
It doesn’t make much sense to spec against one class, when you can spec against everyone in general. Speccing confusion damage is already a direct counter to elementalists.

Whizzy.5723
Try a mesmer. Its like the D/D ele except at range, with more consideration into positioning. It focuses more on burst, as opposed to tankiness. Its also a lot slower to move from point A to point B as well though for a mesmer.

alexparris.3754
I don’t use the cantrip CD reduction by 20%, because I don’t feel as if I need it. I prefer the 50% fall down damage reduction any day, because it offers more versatility in combat options, which is what my preference is.

Whizzy.5723/Bubbles.5926
No D/D is not as viable the higher up you go. Staff is still incredibly useful.
I use S/F every now and then over staff, depending on the situation.

vinceftw.5086
Yeah thats what makes EA so great:]. 4 unique spells, all with their own CD

chaos.5471/Raif.9507
Superior sigil of battle applies 3 stacks of might for 20 seconds with no boon duration, ~33 seconds with boon duration. Sigil of battle has a 9 second cooldown, and works by swapping attunements in combat. Within 33 seconds, you can use up to 3 sigil of battle procs, 9×3 = 27 seconds, or 3 sigil battle procs x 3 (within 30seconds)= 9 stacks of might at all times in combat.

Arganthium.5638
I think knowing the thief downed state is important, especially when your fighting several enemies at once and don’t have time to go for a stomp.

I didn’t really realize about the new D/P trend, but it does make sense using a combo + leap to grant stealth. I’ll add that in the notes.

“Just emphasize “spam AoE/PbAoE” when Shadow Refuge is thrown down. " →
I thought I mentioned t hat already, but I’ll make an additional note about that, and about thieves edging its field of effect

Air5 is the only spell that misses against invisible people. I’ve tried it before with an enemy thief in the party.
