Hiya Fellow Tempest and Elementalist,

Im new to Tempest and I love the heck out of it. I kill mobs so fast in PvE and ive never encountered anything like it in Gw2. Glass cannon tempest truly stays true to the typical hard hitting mages of fantasy. Only thing is…. I’m super squishy, and not just a little bit. With 12k health… I literally will die from 2-3 hits in PvE. In raids, it’s a bit worse.

My question is, is this normal? Iam in full berserkers gear, with 2 armor peices that are Assassins and one assassin trinket. I have scholar runes and I use a berserker staff. While I have never seen any other class in gw2 kill groups of mobs so fast, and take down bosses health so quickly, I have also never experienced dying so quickly in gw2.

I mained a Druid for a bit ( changing main to tempest now), and prior to that I mained a Mesmer for 3 years. Now that I’m a Tempest main, I just can’t help but be more careful with not being hit versus when I played Druid and Mesmer. So once again is this normal to have such low health? To be easily killed in a few hits, In exchange for huge DPS? I have no issues at all if this is the case… I just want to make sure this is normal, and I’m hoping I’m not missing anything.

Thanks,
-Purecura

Yup, Eles/Tempests are made of glass.

If you find you’re dying a lot, change up your build. I heavily recommend taking Arcane Shield, Armour of Earth, and the new shout heal for survivability.

Thanks for the advice. I feel better knowing I’m naturally going to be squishy when being a DPS Tempest. I’ll change a few things around to help me survive.

This is why a lot of people run focus offhand. I can recomend this.
I did run arcane shiel in the past and liked it much. Replaced arcane with tempest and shouts. Also mistform is a great emergency utility. In PvE when running hard dungeons i did put mistform on my bar so it usualy was arcane shield, mistform and glyph of storms for tough PvE content.

Run 1-2 valk pieces to get near 15k hp. it’s not going to get your damage lower sinceall you will lose is a bit of precision and with perma fury pretty much everything crit anyway.

Just run with full zerker for PvE as it is META. Yes, it’s squishy. But it takes time for you to get used to it. I died a lot too when i first started. But now, after 3 years of playing it, there is no turning back to any other style other than zerker because of the huge burst of dps. Even on RAIDS (I’m up to Sabetha on RAID and no, i was never carried and i only played RAID a few times only), i was doing good, never really went down. I’m in Fractals lvl 100 and i’ve been using zerker gear, no problem. But there are situations that force me to change traits due to better survivability while still being a zerker. Trust me, it’s all about experience, ull get use to it once u get a hang on it.

When I want a little more survivability with my Tempest I like to use this build:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vFAQFAWnMMA9XiVYC2NA0RgFBAzt1GbztBBgCwBYIIsDuhA-TRCBwAGViJRJI29HAcBAwp+jZlHp0BkwEXgHAAA-e

Celestial trinkets, Bererker everywhere else, staff, Fire/Earth/Tempest trait lines.

The playstyle is to start in air or earth, run up to your enemy and overload, switch to fire, lava font and flame burst, then switch to air or earth depending on which is up. Hang out in that attunement for 5 seconds, then overload and repeat. You’ll get an aura that heals for about 2k and gives you protection and vigor every time you finish an overload, swap to fire, or use one of the shouts or magnetic aura in earth staff 3. With the protection offered by Earth Overload you have permanent protection and you avoid a lot of conditions if you can keep your health above 90%, which isn’t so hard with all that healing and protection.

This build doesn’t deal as much damage as a glass fire/air/tempest build does (especially in the earth overload phase of the rotation) but it can survive quite a lot of things.

I find that Tempest is too slow to run a glassy build. You need some defense to buy the time it takes to use overloads. With Elementalist, on the other hand, you have a bit more flexibility to dip into quick defensive options from a focus off hand without hurting your dps. Like I’ve been running berserker dagger/focus fresh air with arcane and water. When damage is incoming, I can swap to earth for invulnerability and right back to air for some spike damage. or a swap to water or earth for instant condition removal. and lots of projectile blocking. Even fire provides an evade. When not fighting champions, I can run full arcane utilities, since they all inflict blind in addition to providing damage. And arcane shield is great in general.

Anyway the answer is yes. You will be super squishy in a berserker build. But you also have a lot of tools to avoid damage. (of course you can alternatively run a build with perma protection and tons of sustain and not be squishy at all, though it will cost you some damage output)

Also, I recommend running some marauder gear rather than full berserker. You get a lot of resistance to burst damage (aka more max hp) for almost zero loss in damage.

Well, there may be no squishier build than glass cannon Staff. You have few real defenses with a DPS build, and likely your utilities are damage oriented as well.

My recommendation is to familiarize yourself with our other weapons. Staff is decent for WvW and some PvE, but terrible everywhere else. Consider also that ANet is designing much more mobile encounters, so the field DPS of a Staff Ele is going to take a big hit.

I personally prefer Dagger over every main hand weapon we have. Its fast, does decent damage, and has quite a bit of utility, from Burning Speed to Shocking Aura. Offhand, its still a good weapon, but some of the skills like Churning Earth are seldom if ever used.

While Focus is a mixed bag, it does offer most of our weapon based defense and some utility. Magnetic Wave and Obsidian Flesh are awesome, as is Swirling Winds. Warhorn is ok-ish, what with the long lasting Fire Field of Wildfire, and I do like the more melee centric CC of skills like Cyclone and Tidal Surge.

Basically, you’re going to want to use D/F for all content. It gets you in melee so you benefit more from teammates’ effects (and they yours), is a more dynamic weapon set, and works in nearly all gaming modes barring MAYBE WvW roaming. For utilities, I’ve become really fond of all the shouts, especially Aftershock for the reflects and blast finisher. And then of course there’s Flash Freeze’s Frost Aura.

But the key really in my opinion for Tempest is to play to the strengths of Auras, and pair it with Earth. You can run full Zerk all day, because you’ll have access to 40% Protection with Elemental Shielding, and your defensive skills on Focus will recharge faster with Geomancer’s Training, as well as shortening movement impairing conditions. With nearly all your offensive skills being within the 360 range, you’ll also benefit from Geomancer’s Defense, and when you add Diamond Skin to the mix you’re very resilient.

So basically, go Tempest and Earth, and then select your other traitline based on your task at hand. Air is good for more boons on Auras, not to mention Fresh Air resetting the cooldown on Air Overload when it procs. Water is great for PvP, increasing sustain and support. Fire of course brings in more damage, as well as extending fire field timers, and is really good for a Sinister (or Viper) burn build. Arcane isn’t as necessary with Tempest, although there is some synergy between traits like Latent Stamina and Renewing Stamina.

Thank you all for your advice.

IM not a fan of dagger ele, ascetically speaking. I prefer staff since it gives me the most DMG overtime, and I love the look. In pvp I have no issues. I play a Celestial Auramancer so im good there.

In PvE ( mostly open world and raids… I dont focus on fractals to much), I will switch a few pieces of gear around, and even add in earth attunement. I was thinking of maybe doing a Berserker auramancer, to see if that would be beneficial as well.

On a side note… Im building towards having a gear set for being a Tempest healer. I already have Clerics gear on my druid with Runes of the monk… So I will test that out. I saw a build on youtube and it was amazing to see the Tempest healing potential.

The trick is after you get used to kill speed of Zerker Staff in PVE, you can’t switch back to a tankier build.

Tankier build I kill thing in 10s zerker Ele 3s, I can’t stand anymore that 7s difference.

Other then knowing what to dodge I am using 2 tricks to survive with Zerk Ele, when there are lots of mobs around, first I always stay in my Lava font, 2nd have that trait you cast Lava font when you are downed, that 2 things will always rally you .

When you are against Bosses, you have to avoid red circles and dodge there is nothing else to do.

Ohhh, I rarely use Meteor, only if I am absolutely sure that I am not going to hit with anything during that 3s, for that reason I love Chronomancers so much during the raids who are giving perma quickness, making that cast 1.5s.

Hey I need some help, I’ve made a Tempest a couple of days ago, Running it on Support/DPS.
Might Stacker/Heat Sync

this is my current build
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vFAQJBLhdSfJ0gJWhJY3AwhJWEAM3WbsN3GEAKAPAiuwWoKA-T5QBABpXGgn9HA4BAAA

I Currently wearing only exotic grade armor(Berserker) Weapon is Scepter/Warhorn and I also have a Zojja’s Spire for changing builds. & I’m currently savin’ up to grind my Artificer & Tailoring.

I dunno whether my I should go for Fire/Water/Tempest or Fire/Air/Tempest.
Any suggestions? should I go for stacking more HP and Boon Duration or Just go for the usual power crit build?

We have like 5 reflect shields now.

Passive proc below 90% hp
Overload earth magnetic aura
Aftershock!
focus/horn earth 4
Rebound!

So basically ranged attacks shouldn’t hit us. This leaves melee which you can dodge and kite.

Combine that with 40% protection, aura pooping left right and center with vigor and regeneration and you can see Tempest was a godsend for ele defenses.

The big advantage of staff is its range. You can position yourself out of the way of enemy attacks but still in range of allied buffs; allowing you to do your full dps without even being attacked. The only time you need to be in melee range is when casting overload fire; except for some enemies which are better to melee than to range. You’ll learn the best places to attack from experience.
