So rumor has it that our next Elite spec allows a 1H sword.

Wouldn’t it be sweet if it was a melee based elite spec which also granted heavy armor usage!

Game play feel would be like E/As from GW1, but with front line survivability (from traits and heavy armor).

Part of me thinks that someone in ANet was thinking “hey, wanna see something funny? Watch this…”

Nah, we will just get a 2 stacks of vulnerability on our shatterstone with next elite spec. Ah mb a 5% dmg increase on our staff air 2. Why would we want to use 1h sword with these buffs?

No they are not going to changes the armor type it would make all the old gear ppl have for the class unless causing major problems for ppl. It may have “mages” armor kind of like stronger protection that tempest has but more but we will never see an armor type changes for a elite spec.

I’m sorry but the heavy armor won’t give the elementalist any more survivability. Armor are mainly skins in this game nothing more nothing less. But maybe you wanna play optimus prim as an elementalist with the legendary heavy armor.

No core profession should be balanced around an optional elite specialization.

They will add something cool and passive like 30% chance to cast shatterstone on death

In fairness I said “traits and heavy armor” when discussing survivability. That being said, let’s look at heavy armor:

Heavy armor does add more defense rating. Ascended heavy is +304 defense over ascended light armor. That’s more than all of our +toughness traits and skills (Signet of Earth +180, Stone Flesh +150, Rock Barrier +250).

So heavy armor won’t make you indestructible, but it’s better than all our other +toughness options right now. I guess another option is the “minor” for the new elite could be something like “Allows use of Swords and increases defenses from armor by 30%” and it’s then the same (without the coolness of an ele walking around in heavy gear).

I think asking for increased defence from an Elite spec is like asking for that elite spec to be mandatory, just like Tempest. Eles have been asking for a base increase to vitality for a while, but instead they want us to be forced into Earth/Water/Elite spec. Removing Celestial and Cleric’s from PvP didn’t help things either. If we want healing, we have to take Sage’s or Menders. Magi’s sacrifices a significant amount of damage for only a few thousand more hp and a teeny bit more healing (hooray, 4 stat amulets are obviously better!). And we have to take healing because the only useful Tempest traits involve healing or enhancing healing. This is through the only GM trait worthy of the GM spot (sort of) and speccing for lots of auras. Earth is also necessary because it reduces damage taken, lowers important CDs and gives us protection on auras to reduce damage by 40% on top of other damage reduction. We’re forced to spec Water and Earth if we want to work at our full potential because Tempest doesn’t work with any other trait lines and stats. It breaks the biggest rule for creating a good elite spec. That is, only two trait lines work well. The rest either don’t work at all or so minimally that it’s not worth considering them. And now with fewer stat options, we’re forced even more into Water and Earth. At least with Celestial, we sacrificed damage but we could possibly spec into an offensive trait line over Earth because we had some healing power, toughness and vitality to compensate. Of course, with the insane burst going around, you had to spec Earth anyway, but if damage was lowered, we’d still be forced into Earth because nothing else works well enough.

Anet doesn’t want bunkers in the game, and yet it’s the only top tier spec for Eles. Now Bunker’s weren’t really OP because you couldn’t kill them. It was because they were always on a point and you only need one player to contribute toward a capture. If the game was made so that the majority wins the point, then bunkers wouldn’t be so OP. You could +1 a point and win it in the end. A bunker would provide the advantage of keeping one player on a point always, even under pressure. And if you can’t cap a point against a bunker, send another player over! I don’t know why the game was made the way it is in the first place…

For exotics, which is, I believe, what sPvP is balanced against, it works out to 291. So about a third of a cleric ammy either way.

I doubt ArenaNet will ever make a specialisation that allows a profession to switch armours. What I could see, if they decide it’s needed for a melee-oriented weapon, is a trait that provides a bonus to toughness (or even to defence, if they have aggro mechanics in mind!) when that weapon is equipped – so you’d have to actually commit to the weapon to get the benefit, rather than being able to just take it for free toughness while using the more standoff-oriented core weapons.

To those who think Scarlet hate means she’s succeeded as a villain:
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.

I’m sorry to say it but there is no defense from armor in spvp. Only amulet’s stats. You can freely run naked with your amulet there and you’ll see no difference with or without armor.

No core profession should be balanced around an optional elite specialization.

The wiki says that there is a base armor contribution:

“Players need to equip chest, legs and foot armor to get the base armor value, but hands, shoulders and head are ignored.”

So there is an armor contribution, it’s just normalized. A trait that gives a defense bonus would still function in sPvP.

Just verified ingame. If you remove chest, legs, or boots pieces, your armour drops.

You can also figure out how much armour you have before Toughness. Heavy armour characters have 1167 armour before Toughness in PvP. Light armour characters have 888, making a difference of 279. (For completeness, medium armour characters have 1029.)
