Help against ranger?
Yeah condi rangers have always been tanky and a decent match, with the patch they saw a good improvement – not much because bleed is still very weak, but some.
My advice – coming from the times I faced them in PvP – is trying better management of your condi removal and slightly deviating a bit your rotation (e.g, delay that water swap, don’t be afraid to break the attunement rotation if needed, use cantrips to clear condi after a condi burst – i.e., use that combo from cantrip giving regen and condi removal on getting regen).
Also, with the new patch and seeing that a lot can kill you too fast I switched Dagger OH for Focus.
Using focus you can:
- Shutdown most of axe skills, dagger and torch;
- Clear more condi and reflect some of it (Earh 4) ;
- Avoid getting more condi (Earth 5 – specially good when it is a trap ranger).
I found that the added survivability also did not affect my damage too much, although still getting a hand on using firewall to blast fire fields when dodge rolling in earth.
Hi(playing a ranger). You faced a pure condi ranger build, diamond skin didnt work due to pet damage, his build is BM(was he runnig birds?)
Most condi rangers play with survival utilities or traps, some run with fire spirit(you faced a survival ranger), He most likely have one stun breaker(LR) and no stability, D/D air can realy make a ranger squeal.
As a ranger I find D/D celec ele to be the hardest, Keep him CC, dont try to much to stack burn on this ranger build, he got like 4-5 condi removals on deamnd with reasonable CD. They’r also very limited with movment and running speed.
Thanks,
I saw him again and spoke with him. He said he was celestial and he was also building up about 15 might sometimes 20 throughout the fight. He ran 3 stun breaks, lightning reflexes , signet of renewal and quickening zephyr.
He would set up quickening zephyr and burst me down to about 20% from >75% health at the perfect times knowing my cooldowns were off. His sword leaps alone were hitting me for 1,000 on crit so I know he wasn’t full condi. I only went DS at first because I thought maybe he was condi based because his burns/bleeds were ticking for so much.
He runs bird pets , but sometimes run wolf and dog pet.
Thanks for the tips guys, I duel him regularly since we’re still matched up with Yak’s bend so I’ll see if this helps.
my knowledge of the ranger’s traits isnt that good, how do they keep 15-20 stacks of might?
Ok, well his name is Tanbin. I’m not entirely sure on all the traits but I’ve been studying the build he gave me that he uses for roaming..
aristocracy runes , nature magic which I think is 65% boon duration and he runs a food called ’marjory’s experimental chili’ which gives 20 seconds of 3 might every heal , so 6 might from a heal alone and i think his heal is on 16 seconds or 20 seconds im not sure…
celestial gear w/ dire precision and celestial mix jewelry
He runs skirmishing , wilderness survival , nature magic and sometimes use beastmastery for duels instead of nature magic so he changes his build up from time to time
1 battle sigils on each weapon set (4) , 6 might from heal , most dangerous game gives him 1 might for 10 seconds every 1 second , with 65% might it’s about 16 seconds of might every 1 second i think , and he said sometimes he’ll use zephyr’s speed which is 3 might for 25 seconds everytime he swaps a pet. He’s able to produce fire field consistently in fights as well so I imagine this gives him a little bit more might upkeep too. He said if he ran marksmanship he could easily get 25 might perma due to the might generation from ‘brutish seals’ and ‘clarion bond’ because he could potentially put a fire field down and swap a pet and get 4 might from that too (clarion bond does a blast finisher when you swap a pet). So he has alot of consistent might generation.
It’s a really strong build actually, because he has alot of physical damage and his condi hits as if he’s running a full condi build. It’s frustrating. He said he has about 600 ferocity. Because he wears somefood that converts vitality into ferocity and gives him +100 vitality too, some sort of tuning crystal.
I get close in duels but I can’t kill him no matter what, so much dmg on both ends but really man didn’t know rangers could be this tough! Rangers always whine about them not being viable in roaming too, wow, but this guy has no problem at all roaming.
Thanks again for the input guys, I’m practicing alot in roaming so it helps for sure!

Yea well Tanbin is considered one of the best rangers in the game at the moment , and I’ve only really seen him lose to one ele and that’s Serane in terms of dueling and even then it’s like 50/50 duels when they fight. They both win/lose depending upon how much the person is outplayed really lol.
As a ranger main and who also has a ele and does pretty well against rangers in duels / roaming these are some tips I’ve picked up.
The best thing I could advise is improvising based off what his condi clear his, he’s apparently using wilderness knowledge so he has 2 condi clear on his heal, lightning reflexes , quickening zephyr and I imagine he’s using entangling roots because that’s an extra 2 condi clear. If he runs condi renewal signet then that’s 1 removal every 10 seconds with the ability to take all condi off every 60 seconds (if he was running brutish seals from marksmanship it would be a 48 second cooldown on this). The beauty of that trait also is a perma fury upkeep so it goes well with the 15-20 might and celestial gear.
Put burn on his pet, his pet will follow you usually 80% of the fight, put ring of fire down and run in and out of it while fighting to put maximum burn stacks on the pet and mow down the pet with aoes while dealing damage to him.
Soft cc is crucial for setting up burst and always be surprising with your burning speed + blink combo from range.
Save some defensive utilities for his quickening zephyr burst combo hes setting up on you. That seems to be the thing that is hurting you the most. I’ve seen him duel and he’s able to deal about 8k-10k damage in this combo on top of placing 6 conditions on you w/ 8+ bleeds. So it’s brutal, avoiding and being ready for this is huge.
He’s a very good ranger so if you keep practicing with him then you’ll get better naturally against most rangers. He would definitely be the person you’d want to practice with though to get better against them.
I will add too that I hardly ever see celestial ranger builds so it’s definitely unique and something new. I usually only see pure condi or some form of sinister’s condi build variants around or straight power with longbow/greatsword (or sword/dagger). Nothing like this though so the advice above is the best I can give.
Hope this helps

Ok so his build is somthing like this:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vNAQRAsf3YjEqQLLWyC+rAVLGMEq+dD2WgDg1909W/Fm9CW1A-T1RGABA8EAS4kAElyP60PknSwHV/ht9HEFkZB-w
food – https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Fried_Golden_Dumpling (much better than ghost pepper popper for might stacking.)
full buffed its 95% might duration.
BUT, 2 big weaknesses for it to be a viable roaming build.
1) No mobility out of combat, he’s got no bonus to movment speed, only the small leaps from main sword. He cant escape from anything. Most roaming ranger builds that dont rrun movment bonus or prema swiftness, will go traveler rune, but this build needs the might stacking.
2) range builds can kite his build forever. I cant c how his build will win vs a good LB ranger for example.
Atleast we have one build that can kill D/D eles
in wvw I use ether renewal – case solved ;p, also air instead of fire for mobility and burst with lightning rod (especially if u have zerk parts there). I know u can break the healing, but in wvw there’s alot of space to cast it. U can cleanse the condies and outsustain him with good rotation. Also i like to run full cele, after patch it is even better (imo), cause u dont have too much vit or something like you used to.
LOL wow, ranger is like my 4-5th from the top but this is the exact build I run in spvp. The only difference is I swap the signet for stone since most teams have high burst in spvp and bird for hound to secure stomps.
Now this build is really strong if you don’t understand how the ranger weps synergize and not to stand in fire (seriously people just stand in it) torch 5 + swd 2 is a really good bait combo. Throw the fire down on top of the player and evade back. Keep the fire field between you and them and 90% of players will walk through it toward you, when they start reaching the middle/end too you you leap back to get the fire field wait for their next animation and swd 3 to get the poison going, often after this swap weps, axe 2 3 and dag 5, saving the evade on dag 4 for their next big hit/cc. The other combo is with the elite roots, roots+fire = dead ele. If you dont have a clear or evade the roots(seriously just evade it go make a ranger and learn the animations/cast time)
In his build (and wvw) hes also going to use the hound to immobilize you watch his weps, his goal is imob and drop the fire field. IF YOU GET IN THIS YOU MUST LF OUT or eat the 2 sec and clense evade out. The burning DOT is his largest sustain damage, and the haste swd chain is his highest burst. when you see haste use stuns/imobi/etc force him to have to blow other CDs when his haste is up to make use of it. Honestly if you have BS, LF or RTL up detarget and run when haste is popped he has NO TRUE GAP CLOSER (although he might detarget about face use swd 2 face you, target and swd 2 to close, in this case evade the leap and run, if he cant get the auto chain off before you get the 300 gap he cant close anymore and his haste is blown.)
As an ele main when I play this build I beat ele all day long who just standard rotate, its the most predictable thing in the world, I save my evades for BS, flame garb and swd 2 range out drakes breath and the ele cant do much. You must BREAK this pattern. Spread your burns dont try to stack them, dont use flame garb until you can secure it, short step your BS to cause him to misjudge the distance. Always walk over your fire fields and go COUNTER CLOCKWISE both evades rotate counter clockwise and will NEVER land if you walk this way (play this wep set on ranger for a bit and you’ll understand the real challenges with it.)
The thing is is this build is HIGHLY susceptible to kiting. Again, the swd 3 and dagger 4 evades will not land if you range 200+ and kite counterclockwise around the ranger. The swd autos wont land (making the chain not give the leap closer) axe 2 (the 5 axe bleed) will only land 1-2 axes making it really ineffective. At this point you save your evades for the dagger throw 5, axe 3 and torch 4 (little known fact, you can use earth 2 if your in earth at the time to block them), these are the other DOT spikes he can apply (also use terrain advantage here, LOS and slopes block these low flying projectiles really easily). Don’t waste a cleanse on just one, save it for if you soak 2, your sustain can take 1 of them. Save air 5 and earth 4 and LF for a quick stun. around 25seconds into the fight look for his heal. skip air on your second rotation to save for this. if you can interrupt his heal into a BSflamegard you’ll make a huge dent that passive heal is his lifeline, not popping it when its off cd is extremely damaging to his sustain (think 1000hp/s.) and your earth 4 will be off CD to get a second interrupt securing the kill.
Just remember aside from earth 2 and 4, your attacks are all 300+ range use this to your advantage and save stuns for critical interrupts.
Also just checking but your running doom sigil right? without poison (even him clensing it) your going to have a rough fight.
Well I’ve ranted a lot of useful but unorganized points about his build.
Save stuns for heal interupts and haste counters.
Save condi clear for burning and roots. never stand in fire, and don’t attack fire aura (you should know this you play ele)
vary your rotations, skip skills to speed up stay in fire/air longer to slow down.
dont be afraid to run when haste is popped range is ALWAYS your advantage in this fight.
Rotate counter clockwise around him, pathing on his poisons evades SUCK.
ALWAYS KITE, use movement skills to create distance when haste is popped
Above all else stop playing ele cookie cutter rotation, any good player knows it by heart and will make you suffer for it.
