The only class I’ve played is a necro and I’m trying to learn a second one. I heard this build was pretty “forgiving” in PvP:

http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Tempest_-_Celestial_Auramancer

But, with the sheer # of abilities (4 stances instead of 2 and overloads), the options are really overwhelming…

Other than “Wash the Pain Away!” and “Obsidian Flesh” being awesome does anyone have any other advice for a beginner playing this kind of character? Any go-to rotations or combos I should try to stick with @ first?

I thought it was more about rotating auras?

Also, do people tend to lean towards D/F? How does staff fare against it?

hmmm i dont know how to tell you this but the number of abilities is our strength, we have a skill for everything – granted some are used more than other- you always have something to do and a skill to use but i can give you some tips:

- your main dmg is air, especially the overload try to not get it interrupted so you can leave a strong AOE on point.

- when you see a trap guard on point, use obsidian flesh to blow his traps.

- magnetic wave is a 3 condi cleanse, blast finisher and reflect for 3 secs all projectiles

- aura you apply to your self are shared with close teammates so keep that in mind

- use swirling winds against ranger as destroy all projectiles aka their arrows

- in team fights if you and you guys are low in health overloading water is a good AOE heal and if traited it apply frost aura and since you share aura TA DA you guys are healed and have 10% dmg reduction

and that what i came off the top of my mind, dont worry just play and you will adapt
, and adapting is what ele is about, we are the jack of all trades master of non but great at everything

Thanks, Crow. Exactly the kind of information I was looking for!

This has kind of been my strategy in group fights:

- Stay in Fire for mobility (Fire #3) Engage enemies with Fire #3, if possible, then hit one of my shouts (if closer to more allies, use Feel The Burn!, if closer to enemies use one of the other two)
- Hit all remaining shouts if its a big team fight
- Use Fire Overload
- If going on offensive, switch to Air, use Air #3, then spam Air #1 until I can use Air Overload, then use it
- If getting focused, switch to Earth, use Earth #4
- If my or my allies health gets low, switch to Water, use Heal, spam Water #1 until Water Overload, then use it

That seem like the way to go?

One thing I did notice is that I find myself staring @ my abilities and looking @ cooldowns a lot more than finding a single target and focus’ing them. Kind of like I’m just spamming auras/aoes.

I also find 1v1 very slow. Not quite sure what else to do there other than blowing all shouts and spamming Air #1.

1v1 is very slow. The power of the build is in its ability to support during team fights. While it can 1v1, its generally a matter of out-sustaining the enemy and making sure you are responding properly.

As a note, I replace water with air to run a more offensive version of the build.

When I’m in a skirmish, I usually start in Air. Due to the proliferation of projectiles, I generally pop Swirling Winds first. This tends to negate some ranged burst damage that people try and land upon seeing you and your team. Of course, call out a target next and use Gale to get in some free hits. If you see a thief or something close range coming in, pop Shocking Aura. Use the Air Overload when you feel it’s appropriate.

If you notice a Dragon Hunter or that there’s a significant amount of ranged hitting at you and your team, swap to Earth. If a DH lays down his traps, you can trigger them while using Obsidian Flesh to neutralize their effect. If there’s a ton of projectiles, space out Magnetic Wave, Aftershock, the Earth Overload, and Rebound. If you do it properly, you can generate reflects for quite some time. Also, the protection stacking from the Overload will assist your team’s survival. Just don’t forget that Magnetic Wave is your big Condi Clear.

If you were in Air, and the fight was going fine, then switch to Fire. I don’t feel that I need to explain Fire too much. Use Burning Speed as a gap closer and blast away.

Water, of course, is great for healing. To really save your skin, it’s sometimes best to switch to earth, pop Mag Wave and Obi Flesh, then switch to water for uninterrupted heals. Also, keep in mind all the chill Water D/F gets you. A tempest’s big weakness is chill, and you can use it against other tempests. Additionally, Comet can be a good stomp interrupt.

Now, I run full shouts since they help me Condi Clear, and I don’t have the water line to do that or share my other Auras. As a general rule, I try and stagger my shouts out. Again, this is for the Condi Clear, but also to spread out the boons I’m giving to my allies.

Well, I’m sure I’ve missed or forgotten a few things, but I hope this helps sort some stuff out. Try and think of each attunement as “situational”. Does the fight I’m about to rush in to look like it needs healing? Are there two DHs or multiple projectile users? Hope this helps.

Iv’e been playing tempest pvp since it came out along with my DH, the Auramancer build mentioned above..
Its a great build, i used dagger+warhorn and it works wonders if you use earth+water to support, thats about where it stops. Since im mostly used to solo 1v1 with my dh i get into crazy 1v1’s which i can’t win.
There is no class you will beat, you will lose to any other class if you engage in a fight with them, your cooldowns will lock you in and after a while you will start loosing your health. Once you do, you start taking on conditions il let you figure out later how it affects you.

Not to say the build is bad, i do consider it awsome, it really shines as a true support build.
For instance if your around any class that can take slightly longer periods of beating like Rev or DH, if you keep supporting them through heals and auras, you can easily win 2v3 matchup if he deals a fair enough of dmg (only rev in this case).

You should not be anywhere solo for instance, though its funny…

This build is epicly op for keeping your boss alive in stronghold, if you know how to keep yourself alive, you can heal the boss while hes killing enemy players.

When i play my tempest and stronghold after the doors are down i am usualy on guard duty all the time, you can easily shrug off 4 players if you stay alive while boss is killing them. Just heal the boss and give him auras, provide CC to enemy and run around so you don’t take much dmg from them while boss kills them, its not easy but its epic : )

I usually play WvW not PvP but i also think tempest is a great teamfighter. I play quite diffrent with F/E/T S/F setup, but this setup allows me to 1:1 any power build, plus be good in teamfights. So i do a tradoff. Less team support and weaker gainst most condi bilds but very powerful against power builds and most ranged classes and i win against reapers which is very important. Condi Druids and Revenants with shield are killers in PvP for me at the moment.

I’ve been using Staff Celestial Auramancer and it does really good in teamfights and keeping alive. The downside is you don’t have nearly as much 1v1 damage as you would with say, marauder. (Unless you’re really good)
