Thief’s are OP. How can I kill one 1v1? I ALWAYS lose games that have thiefs in it. They just burst me and i cant even react. Even if I get the jump on them, they never die in my burst and im full zerker, thus they go invis on 10-20% health and come out of invis and kill me in one second.

What combos do you need to do/watch out for/ what weapons/build. I need help im pulling my hair out every time i see a thief.

your full zerker that might be the reason. If you use staff that might also be the reason.

hey is helpful advice though if you have a scepter main hand as full zerker the lightning auto still hits thieves even after they enter stealth. If you are dagger dagger use your burns to your advantage as most thieves lack condi removal. Basically spam your aoe and cc on them. Thief is really one of the easiest things to kill on ele.

also thieves have a 3s stealth. the most likely thing they will try to do is get close to you so you can get away with spamming your fire attacks within the area. Another tip is when you use your pheonix skill, place the marker right behind the enemy so it hits 3 times. I also wouldn’t recommend full berserker. Go for cavalier trinkets

it definately helps with survivabilty but s/d is more of an all or nothing type build. The fresh air trait gives a better burst.

No ele can kill a competent thief. The best you can hope for is that a lower level ele walks by and he kills him first giving you time to get out of combat and port.

^ As badly as ele has been nerfed it can barely manage to kill a competent ambient creature. I’ve shelfed my ele for now until it gets better. I just use it for pve stuff occasionally because its still the most fun class to use for me. In terms of actual usefulness though, ele just doesn’t measure up to what other classes can offer. I just use my guardian, or warrior, or thief depending on what I want to do and do it more efficiently with a fraction of the effort that can be done on the ele. My ele spends the majority of her time in LA now tossing roses at people. That’s about all the class is good for now after the repeated unjustified nerfs.

Reroll as a warrior would also be an acceptable answer. It so ridiculously OP right now its not even funny. I was with 2 of my guild members today on my warrior. we got jumped by 5 thieves, I pretty much dropped all 5 of them at once with one combustive shot. Over 900 damage burn ticks on them. And as quickly as I regain adrenaline on my build I can do it pretty often and just drop it on myself and stand in the flames. They try to run in and stab me and they die. And the damage just jacks up even further when all 3 of us stand in the flames and spam blast finishers. I saw a few 1300 ticks at one point.

I prefer 0/30/0/10/30 in WvW since water 15 and water V traits are condensed into one in Evasive Arcana, which also allows you to have an extra blind from dodging.

In WvW, healing from Healing Ripple vs Cleasing Wave dodge is exactly the same (Cleasing Wave dodge only halved in PvP). The extra 10 Arcane gives you extra boon duration so the extra regen gained easily replaces loss of 100 Healing Power and also lets you heal more often since you can switch to water more often.

Arcane 25 also allows you to randomly weaken the target which is argueably also better than the health gain from the extra 100 Vitality.

You can pretty much instant-kill a full zerker thief if you use food, if he’s not as squishy you still should come out on top and if you try hard enough the fights will end with you Phoenix/RoFing in his Refuge or Arc Lightning through stealth and then happily seeing a downed thief when the stealth ends.

Most people run really ridiculously tanky stuff these days though, so even though you shouldn’t die to Rune of Perplexity as an S/D ele since Arc Lightning is resilient to confusion being a channeled skill and Lightning Strike/Blinding Flash being uninterruptable, you won’t be able to finish off these tanky targets. Tanky/scum guardians are your bane with retaliation and necroes are hard to approach since RtL is nerfed so you can’t just disengage/re-engage as you want to to bait out Spectral Armor or when the condies become too much and you need a rest.

Quasi-elitist dungeoneer and missing Gw1 GvGs greatly.

Combustive Shot and Arc Arrow are what ele skills should be like… They do more damage than Ring of Fire + Dragon’s Tooth, at a much longer range, bigger radius and MUCH EASIER TO LAND >.>

Eles can’t go full zerker in pvp. I don’t know why, but i am sure anet has a philosophy behind it. As far as I know, this is how the game is meant to be.

In full zerker gear and no armor you WILL die on the first salvo against experienced players if you let them. Rapid fire will do it, clusterbombs, a good shatter, you name it. In the thief scenario he will outright kill you from stealth. 11k hp does not go a long way.

to kill a thief, basically what you do is
spread some peanut butter on a soda can.. and tie that to a piece of string
stretch this across a bucket of water, and when the thief comes to eat the peanut butter
it will lose its balance upon eating the peanut butter and drown in the bucket of water

Pretty much this. You can beat Thieves on an Ele, but it’s tough. Don’t go full zerker, they’ll one-shot you. A Knights/Valkyrie’s mix can work well. The trick to beating Thieves is pinning them down and ripping them apart, not just out-bursting them. They’re rightfully the kings of burst, so don’t try to beat them at their own game. Make the game yours. Hit them with a Scepter 2 and 3 when they pop out to kill part of their burst them switch to Earth for protection and hit 4. Then Fire for a Pheonix and Fire Grab (Flash to them if you need to), then back to Air where maybe you hit them with a RTL+Updraft combo.

The key is to land your CC, then carpet bomb the area if they use Shadow Refuge. Don’t blow everything on a thief who hasn’t been forced to use all his emergency escape options.

I main Ele and Necro, though I have an alt of each profession at level 80.

try all at least it’s not just bursting. map awareness is crucial as well. and you’re above average thief is rare

what’s the build and gears? forget it if you are zerkers. you can never beat their burst on zerker to zerker battle.

I didn’t say this gives you a good chance of victory.

But yeah, the best you’re going to be able to do against a good thief in WvW is survive until you can get within 3 seconds of an allied tower, which probably means blowing Conjure Fiery Greatsword and spamming its dash skills until you run out of charges. I wouldn’t generally try to duel a good thief on my Ele. Thief disengage is just so good that there’s never a reason for them to get into a fight they can’t win nor stay in a fight when it’s going poorly for them.

I main Ele and Necro, though I have an alt of each profession at level 80.

Fighting a thief is easy, all you have to do is yawn and let the thief kill you. Fighting back is very inefficient and a waste of time.

I mean, from what I’m reading here, with equal skill levels, no matter what build an Ele runs, he will always be beaten by a Thief. Is this how it’s supposed to work? Are there examples of other professions being hard-countered like this?

No its pretty much just Ele’s… on the other hand I outlive all my guildmates in WvW when the kitty hits the fan.

That being said.. I can’t 1v1 beat any experienced player except for another ele, the odd ranger and engineer.

When It comes to Thiefs… I play the “see if you can kill me before I make it to the tower” game. I roll with a bunker D/D ele, and its basically a coin flip, either he gets me, or runs away cuz he gets tired of kitten ing on me, or I make it to a safe zone.

But i’ve had to disregard alot of power, condition damage, everything… in order to break 3K armor before buffs, so between Evasive Arcana (aoe fields, healing/blind, ect) double Armor of Earth (1 auto from triats 1 utility) Mist form, reaper of grenth (unblock-able chill and poison), auto-arcane shielding, ether renewal, frost armor, ice spikes(dagger skill three, aoe chill) and other moves like burning speed that knock back, or leave lingering damage fields behind you… they usually get tired of kitten ing on me and go pick on someone else, it more or less depends on how persistant they are or their build… not much you can do against the glass cannon build, just way too much damage for you skimply armored ele to handle.

That or you have better things to do so you let them stomp you and port back.

Go dagger focus, you can’t die against thief and most of them are freekill.
You have 2 ranged interupt skill (3 if you play asura) and you can heal at least once while being invincible, even if you are bad with your elementalist.

With dagger focus what matter the most are the timer of your interupt, not your burst.
Spam auto attack untill the thief is at 60-70% hp then let him think he can heal or go stealth, then interupt him and burst. Repeat until he die.
Best way to make it work is to let him think he almost got you and should push a little bit more. Use arcane shield while you have 40-60% hp and interupt him at the same time as the shield explode. Also work with 5 focus earth.

That terrible weapon as you say allow me to win every 1vs1 exept against good (still lame, but it end with a draw) stun warrior and always win against thief.
It’s a control fighting style, not a “i have to make it quick or i wont have enough cooldown against that class to survive” style.

In 1vs1 exept for fire skills, all focus skills are better. You can break the rythm of your opponent with all your control and the 5 earth DD skills is useless exept against begginer, even for an offensive build.

Then its simply you are either fighting:

1) Upscaled people
2) Terrible people

Sorry but /Dagger offers the better damage, more healing and much needed combat movement. What server are you on? Would be interested in seeing if we can have a duel against my Condition Mesmer.

Against a D/P thief, you’re gonna die even faster with a D/F.
He can just chain stealth while you pop all your CD trying to evade that backstab.
It just requires them 2 BS (maybe 3) to take you down. If they need more than 3 BS (assuming they crit) you will not deal enough damage to kill them anyway.

The safe and also my favorite way to kill burst class, is to make the fight last, because they can’t afford it.

Against good D/P thief it’s usually an endless duel, like against stun warrior or until one of us make a few mistake. If one of us die, it’s usually after 10-15min., but most of time it wont be me, because i have enough cooldown to survive more than one mistake.

Don’t forget that D/F have 2 (3 if you are asura and don’t take mist form) ranged (900 and 1200 for asura skill) interupt, 1 reflect ranged skill (that also cure 3 condition), one 4sec invulnerability (50sec cooldown) with wich you can fight or heal, shocking aura (never use it to attack, keep it for defense), magnetic grasp. No other weapon allow an elementalist to last that long against any class, so i don’t get how it would be possible to die even faster than with dd or s/d. D/F take less dmg and heal more over time, because it’s harder to keep attacking them or to try to stop them from healing.
With a dagger you will only have RTL to try gain some time, because you wont outrun a thief with it, updraft + earthquake that you have to use in very close combat range, shocking aura, magnetic grasp lighting flash, mist form and arcane shield, if you take it, but no 100% safe way too heal without being interupted, exept if you use arcane shield + lighting flash, but that’s too much cooldown used for that.

With the D/F skills (interupt and defense) + arcane shield + lighting flash + water evasive arcana heal and mist form, it’s way more than enough to last “15 sec” untill the next cooldown of ether renewal (15sec) and you can cover your heal with arcane shield, 5 earth or with lighting flash, if you are not stupid enough to use all your cooldown too fast.

I almost only roam alone since May (90% of the time, before May it was more like 70%) and i m used to figtht multiple opponent or fight several opponent without stoping, so i try to never waste my cooldown.
The best (but still lame build) stun warrior i tried to fight in 1vs1 even said that i had a lamer build, because we fought for over 30min without any of us dying (but i was trying to survive instead of killing him 70% of the time, since i can only fight in close combat and win with my interupt, two thing you can’t do much against stun warrior xD)
I almost never use mist form in 1vs1, but i keep it in case of mistake and i always have at least a defensive cooldown available that i will only use if an other one is almost available (less than 5sec).

On the screenshot, this is the stats with wich i’m roaming and as you can see, i’m mostly playing my elem, but 90% of it was in www (mostly roaming alone) and the rest in spvp and pve the first days (3 max) of the release of the game.
If i’m going to duel someone somewhere safe, i use glyph of elementals instead of the greatsword. You can easily cast the greatsword while being invincible to run away with a focus.

Most of people assume that focus is really bad, even if most of you never fought against a decent focus user. Why ? Because almost nobody use a focus, so almost nobody mastered it. With all the time i have spend roaming alone, i have only met 3-4 different focus users, only 2 knew how to use it at a decent level. One of them was with a scepter, but he had no chance to kill anything else as begginers, because scepter skills are too slow.
It’s the best setup for 1vs1, but if you play in group i agree it wont be the best.

No its pretty much just Ele’s… on the other hand I outlive all my guildmates in WvW when the kitty hits the fan.

That being said.. I can’t 1v1 beat any experienced player except for another ele, the odd ranger and engineer.

When It comes to Thiefs… I play the “see if you can kill me before I make it to the tower” game. I roll with a bunker D/D ele, and its basically a coin flip, either he gets me, or runs away cuz he gets tired of kitten ing on me, or I make it to a safe zone.

That or you have better things to do so you let them stomp you and port back.

If you are a bunker D/D ele, a 1v1 with a thief is a fight you can win. You have an advantage against condi thieves and power thieves are a (for the most part) fair fight. I still run D/D bunker, and I beat the vast majority of thieves I fight. If I lose, it was close. Almost every single time a thief stealths it works in your favor as a bunker. A bunker ele should have way better sustained, and you should have plenty of ways to avoid or mitigate burst damage.

A straight zerker ele doesn’t stand much chance against a thief. Zerker ele isn’t a self-sufficient build. If you run a build like that, you need to accept that you’ll get hard countered in a 1v1. Thief is literally the best profession in a 1v1 glass vs glass fight. Thieves were designed around the idea that they should be good at dealing high single target damage, eles were not.

Truebanana, how do you interrupt a thief from backstabbing you?
Updraft (istant cast) and Earthquake are AoE. The only thing a focus gives you is Obsidian Flesh, which is a safe Ether Renewal on 50s cooldown.
Then you have Arcane Shield, another safe Ether Renewal on 75 second cooldown.
Assuming you gain all the health lost to backstabs with these utilities, tell me how you are going to survive the huge amount of stealth and backstabs the thief is going to throw at you.
As a D/P thief, I can land 3 backstabs in 10 seconds, along with a couple Heartseekers and a few autos. Granted, you have a high health pool and decent toughness, but you will not escape a good thief. You use LF? I catch up with steal.
If you use Shocking Aura for Ether Renewal, I’ll interrupt you with pistol #4, and that’s a wasted Ether Renewal.
D/F surely will make the fight longer because it guarantees an Ether Renewal with Obsidian Flesh. But after 20 seconds either you are dead or you have every utility in cooldown. You MIGHT be able to do another Obsidian Flesh→Ether Renewal, but that’s it.
The difference between a stunlock warrior and a D/x thief is that the former one has better sustain which you could mitigate with your high health pool and Ether Renewals remember that Shocking Aura will work against a Warrior), while the latter is way more burst.

I am not even a zerker thief, but my BS crit for nearly 7k on D/D tanky elementalists. How do you mitigate a 7k burst every 5 second?

I’m S/F, your 7k burst is 4.5k on me. I usually lose to thieves due to the stealth and S/F’s lack of ability to fight an invisible class (even less with the stats in PvP, I don’t play WvW).

To keep thieves away I will Dragons tooth then stand under it. I also pop invulnerable when I think a thief will stealth attack me, only to disheartendly see: “invulnerable, invulnerable, invulnerable” about 5 times as they happily and non skilfully press 1 until my invulnerability runs out, totally crap if you ask me. If my invulnerability runs out I will follow with a dodge or phoenix the ground just as it ends. Not to mention the most important thing, moving. Standing still is a death sentence.

In the end though I will lose, as stealth spamming in this game is just broken. Promised by the devs to have short stealth’s and not much access to them, get 15-20 second stealths and access every 4 seconds.

Elementalists got hit with a 40 second cd on RTL for using it to escape, where is the Thieves 40 second cd when they don’t attack with thiers?

the truth is if its a good thief then you simply CAN’T win… its just not possible no matter which build or how pro you are you will never win against a good theif

At the end of the day it’s pretty much this but you can replace thief with any other class. How successful you are at ele is 80% how well your opponent plays and 20% how well you play.

Quasi-elitist dungeoneer and missing Gw1 GvGs greatly.

I’m pretty doom and gloom about the ele class, my build in particular, but still, you guys are over stating the balance between these two classes. I’ve fought some insanely good thieves, and rarely do I feel like I didn’t have a chance to win. Usually when I lose, I can point to something and say if I didn’t do this, I would have won.

The only time I feel like I really lost to the character rather than the player is the perma stealth d/p thief that uses ONLY backstab. But those are really long fights and I only stick around for them in duels. If someone is cheesing that hard, I’ll just leave, and I don’t consider it a loss when someone is sitting in stealth for 95% of the fight, attacking once, then stealthing again. Even with that strategy, I’ve only encountered a few d/p thieves over the course of months who could abuse the build hard enough to win without me having a chance.

Ele has some really great tools for fighting thieves. It’s a tough as hell fight, but also fun. Thieves have some glaring weaknesses which you can exploit. Then generally only run one stunbreak, they are usually glassy as hell, and they have to manage their initiative. It’s really kittening hard to beat a top tier thief as an ele, but it’s true in reverse as well.

I duelled a thief in pvp for a comp, it killed me within 2 seconds.
Second round I lasted 4 seconds due to invulnerability.

The game actually started, he stealthed for 20 seconds and then came and killed me. As he became visible I saw the high might stacks and realised I had let my protection run out, but still, quite painful.

You can as you said in theory backstab 3 times in 10sec, but you wont be able to, because you wont want to die and it will be more like 1 Every 10sec.

I see that you are on an EU server, so i can show you in spvp. Even we wont have the same stats, you will be able to see the gameplay, because you didn’t actually try D/F before thinking it wont work, like most of people.
I will be at home at 8.30pm GMT+1 and have a lot of free time to play untill the 10 september.

I count 3 and 2 of those require you to see your target (but will still hit if they stealth during the cast). Shocking aura is really good, though a non kitten thief will just wait for you to waist it and remain hidden till its gone. Same with invulnerability, though they can generally just spam 1 till it runs out.

Fair enough, I’d like to give it a try
I’m sort of a "tanky"thief, but with a zerker amulet I would still deal at least some damage.
