How to play elementalist?
You NEED to be good at dodging to play the Elementalist effectively, since most of the time we have such low health and armor. I would recommend making yourself more tanky (Toughness and Vitality) until you get a good hold on the profession. As you get better, you can shift slowly (wean yourself off) and move towards more damage.

then add whatever else you want to the end of the search, such as wvw, d/d, staff, spvp…etc
Elementalist (together with engineer) is the hardest to play class in guild wars 2. It is NOT the classical mage from a typical role playing game and it is (sadly) NOT a class for beginners. You should really try a warrior or guardian instead. These classes are much more forgving, easier to play and much better in general to learn the game mechanics (it is much easier and straightforward to create a build that works on a warrior or guardian). To play elementalist effectively you need to know all the skills, combo field mechanics, boon effects and whatnot. If you want to continue playing your elementalist I would recommend you start with some youtube-howto videos like droshi said.

Claryfying this: Engineer has a high skillcap, but performs just fine even in the hands of a mediocre/average player because of how much breathing room you have with survivability and build diversity.
Ele also has a high skillcap, but will NOT be anywhere near as effective as Engi in the hands of a player who doesn’t know what they’re doing. The player has to spend a lot of time and effort with the class and have near-perfect execution on everything (abilities, dodges, etc). Also there’s no reward for being a good Ele player, you will simply be on-par with average players of other classes.
So @ OP, you can either deal with the fact that Ele is a very difficult class to learn/play with no reward for all that work…or you can reroll another class (literally any other class will do) and have a far smoother learning curve, a lot more room for error, far easier to learn, etc.
PS – I have no idea how to play world v world or pvp and when I go to the mists I always run around a lot and never see anyone (what the hell is world v world and pvp anyways?)
ANY ADVICE WOULD BE AMAZING THANKS
First, you should read about stuff here to get at least the most basic questions answered:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Main_Page
After that, you can take a look at this thread for the basics of WvW:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/wuv/wuv/The-Basics-of-WvW-guide-and-more
And this one for some more detailed overview about PvP (please notice that the presented builds are for PvP and not necessarily what you should use in PvE or WvW):
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/New-to-PvP-Start-here
Then you can also look at the forums for the different classes you’re interested in, and look at the builds and advice which people posted. With time, you’ll start to understand reasonings, and will probably (along with growing your own experience through playing) develop your own preferences and start adjusting builds to your liking or even make your own from scratch to fit your playstyle.
Last but not least… play and enjoy the game. And use the wiki as backup-info if you’d like to read up on some things. You can also easily do that from ingame… just type /wiki and the name of what you want to know more about… for example if you want to know more about the trait “Evasive Arcana”, you could type “/wiki Evasive Arcana” and a page about this trait will open in your browser.
Only time and experience will teach you how to play the elementalist. Also keep in mind if you don’t have previous experience playing as a mage profession type on previous mmos, elementalist will be even harder for you to master in a more competitive environment like wvw and spvp.

I rolled an Ele thinking I would feel right at home with a supposedly “mage” class but it turned out to be something else entirely. Elementalist is nothing like Mage/Sorcerer professions in any other MMO.
Take WoW Mage for example….that class revolves around long-range nukes, lots of kiting abilities, CC, damage absorption (shields) to compensate for low health and complete lack of healing. Through-and-through a pure damage class.
Meanwhile Ele plays like a mage with zero kiting/CC potential, no absorption, just high damage through area-placed abilities and everything separated by eternally-long cooldowns that don’t make any sense.
You are given lots of group support abilities, healing and rely on boons. ArenaNet themselves have said that Ele is a jack-of-all-trades class, and by that definition it’s nothing like a Mage/Sorcerer, it’s just “support”.
Engineer or Mesmer is what I would recommend for fans of the Mage class.

By the sound of “rely on boons” you make me guess you play the old fashioned d/d weapon set/build. I don’t play d/d anymore so for me there are plenty of kiting (kite warriors all day to the point they get so mad after) cc, vulnerability to damage, long and close range burst, instant and charge spell casts.. Of course it isn’t as overpowered as the typical mage type from other mmorpg like the sorcerer from Aion but it does have all the typical mechanic.

stick to warrior. ele is too much for you.

Yea rely on boons is 20 points in Arcana minimum. Long range nukes is staff 20 in fire minimum and 15 air minimum for deeps. Staff is alot of fun alot of CC and alot of damage put the daggers down try other weapons try not going 30 in arcana. Scepter is also alot of fun. The only boon you need to worry about with staff is Fury and Might maybe Swiftness for kiting which staff does extremely well.
I admittedly run class D/D style Ele and I love it but if you have tried staff or other weapons extensively and moved trait points around out of your comfort zone there is no way you could say you can’t kite in staff and that it relies on boons. In pvp/wvw staff is very powerful it always was it just needed a few buffs which it received but the damage was always there.
