SPvP, (PvE is fine):

Back when the game was still in development I always looked up to the Guardian, I started playing him but didnt like him, he wasnt what I expected, i was expecting sort of a resto druid/holy paladin which was very versatile but I didnt get that, i messed up around with different classes until i found the elementalist, when I found it i absolutely fell in love with the profession and havent played anything else ever since……. until a while ago.

I noticed that elementalists can go full glass cannon, and for the most part they have the potential to do lots of damage, real hurtful damage, except for one little detail, long CD, small area of effect, non-targeatable and SOOOOOOOOO easy to avoid. Im talking about staff and scepter. I tried rooting them, but by the time casting was over and the skills tarted building up they had already walkout and then proceeded to 3 hit me.

I thought this was normal and to be expected, such extreme power should have a draw back, until i picked up a ranger and a thief……boy was I wrong to think that way?! They had the same (if not more) reliable damage while being able to keep relatively (very) safe. It is then where it dawned to me, elementalists have a newbie trap: high risk, very difficult- medion-not worthy reward.

Of course i have tried going really tanky, i’ve tried SEVERAL builds, involving all weapons, lots of practice, got my friends to play with me on empty servers to try out builds and combos….no matter what, 9 out of 10 times i would die miserably regardles of keybinding, landing all stuf and kitting.

Dont get me wrong, tankalist with staff is nearly impossible to kill/chase, but i want to be able to pick up a RELIABLE build where I can kill someone before i die.

If you think im wrong please enlight me, but give constructive comments, dont give me the: “you suck, they are awesome”. I have specced on fire/lighting, also tried, fire/earth, lighting/arcane, currentlydoing water/earth because the tankiness it provides, still do crappy damage but it is to be expected, im a heal/running bot.

i run 10/0/10/30/20
with my utilities for mist, cleansing, and arcane wave. you’ll be semi tankish and won’t be able to tank as many people as you would right now. but you will be able to kill people and if you have any support of any kind you can destroy people, even if its another ele, 2v4 me and an ele killed 1 ele, a warrior, a theif, and either anothe rele or mesmer with onyl help coming from my other team at the very end when we killed 1 enemy and all the other enemies had about half. its ok on its own, but its a lot better when you have support, since they are expecting the ele to not do anything and focus on the bigger target, obviously that is a mistake since if they do that i can faceroll people what i have found out the best support are(for staff) the 5’s earth 5 and air 5 especially stun and immobilize are very helpful. water 5 is for healing, metoer 5 is for when you have a warrior keeping them immobile. the 4’s are more slowing the enemy and running away. 3 is where you do your extra damage, 3 for fire causes a group burning which is good since condition damage is always good to have on someone. air 3 is so useful(if you can hit someone with it, so you have to wait until they get closer than their maximum range, unless its a charging warrior then just pop that and back they go water 3 is a nice backup healing, and earth 3 is probably the most underused skill, pop it whenever you get into earth and facing people from range, if condition theif with range and pop it right you can give him all the effects. 2 is where you start doing your damage, earth 2 needs a great deal of timing but when it hits its great since it probably does more damage overall, but hard to hit, water 2 is probably your less reliable but still good damage dealer since all its damage happen at one, fire 2 is where you go to get your blast effects on and where you will be doing most of your damage. air 2 is an AOE blind, its a small radius but its still a blind and its aoe not much gets better than that. for auto attacks fire will be your best since its aoe and have more attacks, waters healing only happen if you are right right next to the target. earth 1 is a weaker version of fire. lighting is ok if you are facing multiple people. now you gotta figure out how they work together

I agree the only reliable way to get damage done is with main hand dagger. The target spells of the scepter and staff take too long to go off and people are getting a lot better at avoiding them. i tried dagger, couldn’t get into the feel of it, and i’ve been doing great with it, one of the few problems i have are obviouly the good theives, the good guardian, and my worst enemy of all condition necro’s since their curropt boon kills me, i usually have about 2 boons on at all times. so their corropt boon messes me up, cleansing fire can get rid of 4 conditions if i just activated armor of earth because of the earth’s embrace trait i get about 6 boons, that’s a lot of conditions to have on oneself at the same time

TBH, I think staff is a terrible 1v1 weapon, for basically the reasons you describe. It is good for supporting your team, but 1v1 is pretty horrible.

D/D OTOH, is an amazing 1v1 weaponset, and isn’t that bad in team situations either.

EDIT: Elementalist damage is kittening awesome assuming all the moves hit.

D/D’s damage can be mostly avoided because of some fairly big and distinct “Dodge Me” animations or have been balanced around the full duration of the conditions.

This pushes the elementalist into control/semi-bunker type builds and playstyles that outlast and manipulate the opponent.

I run D/D (0 / 10 / 0 / 30 / 30) and I do just fine. I use cleric’s amulet (w/ knight’s jewel), 3x Water and 3x Monk runes, and Life and Battle sigils on daggers. With this build I have plenty of healing and survivability. I like it because this is the only build that I don’t feel squishy in. I can also do okay damage, but that isn’t the focus. It’s great for capping / holding points, 1v1 (or even 1v2 or 1v3 sometimes), and has a ton of mobility so roaming is very much an option.

Try this approach which works for me:

1) D/D – “invincible” 1vs1 specialist; I have been reported for apparently hacking as I do good sustained dmg + great condition dmg and unable to die, against glass cannon mesmers/thieves/warriors my dmg and survivability get doubled – all professions beaten from sPvP to tPvP levels( including fair amount of paid)

2) Staff glass cannon – “ground zero” heavy artillery specialist; fairly used during tPvP, I go unchecked and unleash hell on a large area, my meteor storm hit for 3k each boulder, a fireball hit people for 1.3k max and lightning surge does over 3k dmg on X foes, with a single rotation of attunements , I can bring people down to 20% HP.
Frozen ground+static field is a good combo to snare targets.

Regarding scepter/focus, I can’t find any suitable build which suit my tastes, all i can do with scepter, can be done better by d/d and staff

With staff you really want to avoid 1v1 battles in the open. It’s not impossible to win, but you have to work much harder and hope your opponent has never fought a staff ele before to get the edge. However has the poster above me said, staff still has some vicious heavy artillery power. The whole point of conquest is to fight on the node to capture it. Use that to your advantage.

I usually sit away from the node, preferably on higher ground. Using the staff’s range as my advantage. True, I’m not contributing to taking the node. But with the Blasting Staff trait Lava Font and Eruption take up almost the entire node on most maps. And Meteor Shower covers almost all of the Graveyard node, which is by far the largest. The result? Everything standing on that node to capture it has to leave or die very quickly. So the enemies are either taking large amounts of damage or they forfeit the node to your allies. Either way with the exception of just being out numbered you’ll have effectively tipped the scales of power in your team’s favor.

Some players outright refuse to leave the node in spvp when you start showering them with pain. And by the time they capture it they’ll usually have blown a few defensive cooldowns and are around half health if not worse off. At which point you have a decent chance of actually killing something in a 1v1 and taking the node after!

But seriously. Better run with a team mate to keep the heat off you.

I think the class is a mess with a major design pass needed on our abilities and traits to do more than put a band aid on all its many problems. The class is clearly designed to be able to put out significant damage, which explains the slow animations, easy to avoid damage and long cool downs, none of which works very well once they nerfed our damage into the ground. Of course, with only two designers working on class balance, I’m not expecting them to get around to fixing any of it any time soon.

1. Lower attunement swapping time across the board.

2. Bring back the EA blast finish. Bug or not.

3. If half our traits are dealing with conjures, make the friggin’ conjures viable. Make it so they only replace the skills of the element they are attuned to and
allow us to swap attunements with a conjured weapon.

4. Class needs a base damage buff in general. Doesnt have to be big since we do have a lot off CC, but our base damage skills do almost no damage compared to other classes, especially specced heavy damage.

5. We have too many long cast times, directional facing requirements and aimed skills. Tone them down a bit. (this could also be used to fix thief what if some of their huge burst skills had to be aimed like fire grab instead of just spammed?)

Yeah, probably i should play more games on my ele because obviously 1500+ games with Ele arent enough or 600+ twins or beeing 1 of the highest ranked EU Eles.

0 in water and earth, 15 in arcane. You can already guess what this build is.

Glass cannon build works fine in sPvP and occasionally in wvw. It plays like a suicide bomber, RTL → updraft → burning speed etc etc etc

In PvP, I think ele is fine, pve is where the problem is. Elementalists are supposed to be the nukers of MMO, instead they are only viable as clerics in this game. It’s ridiculous.

Errr….that burst is insane? I even noticed your Arcane blast was on cooldown in the midst of that damage….wow.

I like my S/D valkyrie burst build…but that looks pretty tempting.

Elementalists have some issues, but viability? We’re doing just fine in sPvP with the right build. Look up the right build and keep playing bro. Eles is fine and incredibly fun to play.

mmm glass cannon would work great in sPVP but random matches have atleast 1 thief on either side… as a player who has a thief, mesmer, warrior , gaurdian and elementalist i can tell you after i find the squishiest class in the game i usually totally stick to them since they are worth points and take 3 seconds max to nuke

but will try to this with my ele today and see what happens.

Staff is horrible 1v1, compared to the other weapons, however it isn’t unusable.
Imho, we need one more weapon, one that is 1200 single target DPS focused, it’s hardly fair as an Ele that we’re forced to go D/D to get any reliable DPS out of the class.

Also we’re glass cannon by design, however without the cannon and we have to spec into the cannon which makes our glass wet tissue paper. Yeah Evie may be able to pull of that burst but the draw back is long C/Ds and if you’re caught it’s more or less GG.

In the greater blob of things, there is only the zerg.

I play a lot of spvp and while I agree that the ele is a challanging class to learn, I can’t agree that it is weak or UP in pvp. A well played ele with a decent build is one of the fights I hate the most. Their very powerful aoe, knockdowns, speed/mobility, with some builds being extremely tanky are a nightmare to go up against.

I say keep on practising, maybe link up with someone really good like Evie appears to be.

Burning Speed → Ring of Fire → Fire Grab is equivalent to 2.5 thief Backstabs. Add Arcane Power, Blast, and Wave into the mix and you can get the equivalent of 5.6 (with base crit multiplier) to 7.5 (with 50% crit multiplier) Backstabs, and in the same amount of time.

Thief high hits come from bonuses to damage output. They get buffs like +10% damage with high initiative, +20% against enemies under 50%, or 5% damage and 7% crit while flanking. However, we can get +10% against burning enemies, +10% while in air or fire, +20% against enemies under 25%, and several guaranteed crits with Arcane Power. So we can match their damage bonuses, and we can pull off our burst faster. Thieves are limited to one Backstab every 4s.

People underestimate the burst a D/D glass cannon can pull off ^^

Also, you know what I want to see now? A hammer Warrior duo with an Elementalist that has Grounded. A D/D Elementalist doesn’t have all that many knockdowns and stuns, but a hammer and M/M Warrior can let loose stun after stun. So get a glass cannon elementalist and add that 20% bonus, and you get massive AoE destruction. The Warrior keeps everything locked down while the Elementalist blows it all up.

Not really. Like the other poster said I was talking about PvE. Do what you did in the video and the elite then 1 hits you.

Also, that play style has no survivability. If I wanted to play like that I’d just go play Deathmatch on CoD. Kill people and respawn. I actually like not dying in pvp. Once the other team knows you’re glass cannon, unless they are full of noobs the classes that can 3 hit you focus you first the rest of the game and you get faceplanted a bunch.

Not really. Like the other poster said I was talking about PvE. Do what you did in the video and the elite then 1 hits you.

Well, then build a bunker. I guarantee you that a bunker D/D elementalist hits harder than defensive specs in other classes. You can still swap to fire for massive damage, or you can focus on water for the healing. Compare this video to this video. Both the Warrior and the Elementalist are surviving against far greater odds. However, the Warrior contributes virtually no damage; her teammates are the ones that do the killing. She’s pretty much pigeon-holed into spamming shouts and never dying. The Elementalist actually deals damage and gets kills off.

Today has been a really hard day for me. Im dying constantly in spvp with my trusty build.. Im getting tired of burst mechanics in this game. And lack of reliable burst with ele. Got 6,5k steal from a thief with 2k toughness, unkillable mesmers who just phase out when things go awry and many more frustrating things.. I have almost 1k games played with my ele and rank 6 mesmers and thieves cause me gray hair……… how ridiculous is that

Yes they seem to be counters to almost everything.

i could deal with thieves, but i cringe when i see mesmers…. I wouldnt go as far as saying they are OP and definitely NOT fun to play agaisnt as anything….but they kinda are…..

Why? People said Ele woudlnt do any meaningful damage and i proved them wrong.

Ele has more killing potential (because of the aoe) and still more group support then those classes you mentioned.

Thiefs, Warriors, Mesmers do literately nothing outside their combo.

Thiefs cant kill kitten if their opponent has even 1 CD left and are free farm for any class in high tpvp. They cant 1on1 on a even skill level and they need to have everything ready to kill (+ Elite —> Basilisk Venom)

Warriors cant burst if their target isnt stunned or rooted and they cant get a HB trough without Frency and get destroyed through conditions same as thiefs.

The 3 classes have 1 skill or 1 rotation to keep track off and try to avoid. Ele has 15 skills that are worth dodging and no fixed rotation and a rediculous amount of conditions.

In high tpvp against ladder guilds im the 1 to engage their mesmer on their point because i take them down 100% of the time, its cake. Same with Support Eles, Engis, Guardians, Necros.

Scepter has even more damage potential in team fights and more defense. You would be surprised how often dragons tooth hits in teamfights.

Phoenix + Ring of Fire + Firegrab is the same as Burning Speed + Ring of Fire + Firegrab

Dragon Tooth is just a bonus.

You can drop as full glass cannon just in air + sigil prog + arcane skill a quick range burst of 10k+ in the blink of a second.

For the burst you’re seeing in the video? Fairly simple, no points in Water, full Divinity Runes and a Beserkers for the health given. Assuming 30 Air and 30 Fire:

10 points can be taken out of Air and put back into Arcana or Water if you’re too uncomfortable being an absolute glass cannon. Haven’t tried out the Haste proc sigil on elementalist yet, but a fast Fire Grab → Churning Earth sounds yummy and with 72% chance to crit (fury) on the AoE’s the odds are much improved. 30-30 hits really hard but it’s meant to end fights quickly; if it becomes prolonged the squishiness and cooldown on the attunement swaps starts to hurt.
