Interesting new build. Thoughts?
Link isn’t working.
From the sounds of it, it is a nice build. One issue though, as far as I know, Fire Shield only does damage when you are struck making it much less useful.

Something about the forum is broken, thank you. I didn’t change the url, I just changed it from a link to plain text, and now it works.
As for fire shield, I’m basing this off of what I can find online. The wiki says
Grants the Fire Shield effect, burning foes that come within melee range.
However, even if the burning only applies when they hit you, that’s still pretty sweet. Either way, your enemy is taking lots of burning damage. Also, how does that work with multiple hits? If a warrior is hitting you with hundred blades, do they get a ton of burning because it’s 8 hits? If so… cool ^^

I’m not saying I’ll intentionally get hit. However, at some point I am going to get hit, and having fire shield means they’ll take some damage. It’s a side benefit.
Aura build huh? cool.
Dont expect great things from Fire Shield. The protection (and swiftness/fury if you trait it) is the best thing it gives.
Asumming you PvE with that – Against mobs its terrible, especially at high levels. Mobs tend to hit slow but hard. This is the worst situation for fire shield. You want lots of hits but light.
In PvP there are better options. It doesnt trigger nearly enough against ranged, and melee tend to wreck the ele.
Yeah, the fire shield is for protection/fury/swiftness. While using this build, I’ll be doing my absolute best not to be hit :P
I extensively tested something similar (Signet rotation build to perma keep protection/fury/swiftness up) in BWE #3 (both as D/D and S/D) because I got tired of listening to a guildmate tell me Daggers were OP and that I was just being a stubborn baddy refusing to let go of Staff. I’ll give you a basic rundown of how everything turned out (did many hours of in guild ‘dueling’ and 1v1/1v2 scenarios that we deemed would be common encounters for mid-map skirmish or point defense).
Success was terribly minor and limited to being able to beat other low-hp/toughness builds on more support oriented classes that could not pump out damage. So, in other words….Staff Ele’s who weren’t Splish Splash specced, Guardian’s who weren’t ‘the Burn’ spec, and Longbow Rangers (because the weapon puts out less damage than you do, which is already a laughable amount).
I’ll admit that I tried it, and that if I caught someone in a Churning Earth + DTooth + Phoenix + Fire Grab chain I pretty much wrecked them dead. But honestly, who would be dumb enough to eat all 4 of those spells back to back to back to back. It should be noted that most of the wrecking being done was not against guild members, but against randoms who ended up getting put in our match and were just terrible at the game in general.
I won’t tell you to not try it, but I will tell you that you won’t stand toe-to-toe with any non-caster class using melee weapons (part of why I went S/D eventually, still very limited success because of the severe lack of area denial that no weapon but the Staff possesses). If you don’t believe me just go find a buddy who is a Warrior/Thief/Ranger/Guardian and tell him to auto-attack you while you mash 1-2-3 on any weapon set as an Elementalist, I’ll bet money he doubles your damage over any amount of time.
I’m okay with melee weapons doing more damage to compensate for their lack of range, but not when their attacks are twice as fast to boot, that’s a factor of 3-4 times more damage per length of time (I say 3-4 because I don’t truly believe melee weapons are quite double the base damage of spells, but the speed on some of them definitely makes it feel that way).
Not particularly new, did about the same build in BWE2 myself. Oh, and note that the speed +10% is only applied in combat. (Same goes for the trait) which sucks. =/
People who can’t tend to call the opponent troll, scream something utterly incomprehensible
and finally result to personal insults.
I’m not sure if this build is for PvE or PvP, but you’re not going to last long (even with perma swiftness/protection) if you’re not rolling at least one cantrip.
