Mesmer portal: gamechanging
Yeah, the lack of range on Lightning Flash is sort of meh. Would be neat to be able to portal onto things, indeed.
You can port up onto the same things you can with the mesmer and thief blinks. I have blinked through the ground to the clocktower, up to the trebuchet from the ground and up to the balconies from the ground. Tell me a place that others can blink that we cannot.
Well it does nothing like that at all in WvW. I don’t personally care about sPVP.
I use it defensively:
Best case scenario : click on any wvwvw gate within 900 to vanish into safety. (i have it on middle mouse)
Second best : get out of melee range instantly.
Its usefulness depends or you weapon i guess. As D/D it’s a must have imo.
Honestly, I love our blink and calling it terrible is kind of ridiculous. I would prefer it to be like the mesmer blink, but it is still VERY good.
I use lightning flash to…
1. The ever present churning earth bomb.
2. I use it to turn earthquake into a range 900 knockdown…great for catching people, or acting as a shock trooper in WvW.
3. I use it to escape, especially to escape from a large zerg while in mist form.
4. I use it for a slight travel boost.
5. I use it to blink-stomp thieves and mesmers who use their downed state to teleport away…I love doing this, it feels so good when you pull it off lol.
As for speed…Zephyr’s boon and glyph of elemental harmony = permanent swiftness if you have some points in arcane. So you don’t even need speed runes.
And I agree with Frye, I feel like Lightning Flash is an absolute must have for D/D. It transforms Churning earth from a really iffy skill that will likely be avoided, to an almost sure hit (people seem to never expect the blink, and think they are safe).

I would argue a 1.5 second cast. It does not need to be isntant, but it needs to be fluid in combat.
Blink and Lightning Flash behave identically (except Blink has shorter cooldown and Lightning Flash deals damage). I use both extensively and in a similar way.
Portal, on the other hand, is a completely different mechanic – you can’t use it to port “onto things” unless you’ve already been there before, thus it’s mainly used offensively (WvW), to “undo last action” in jumping puzzles or tactically for advanced kiting maneuvers.

Can’t you use it while casting another spell? As in, go up on the wall, cast a firestorm and then tleport back to safety while still casting the spell?
The range should be increased, but other than that the ability is great
Or another alternative is to leave the range the same, but reduce the cooldown by say 15 seconds
C/D reduction/range increase would suffice but it’s not the top of the agenda of fixes/changes.

This skill almost never leaves my bar. It does have a pretty intense cooldown though. Its not like its extremely op or anything. 15-20 seconds would fit better than a massive 45 seconds. The range is fine for me.
What i hate is that Jump Shot (and similar abilities) allow you to bridge gaps with them, but i cant even use blink to safely land on the ground from high up. I understand this abilities could be use to enter places in Wv3 the wrong way, but nerfing the ability itself is destroying a layer of fun exploration few games have. Im so tired of MMOs focusing all their skills only on dmg/healing/support/dmg-prevention. Add skills that are fun and interesting adding a unique mechanic. One of the most fun skills i had was the demon eye in my warlock (burning crusade time) and the ability to summon a lose demon in towns. Heck in this game i cant even find fun ways to avoid fall dmg, so anal about terrain manuvering.
Mesmer teleport (blink) is identical to elementalist.
Portal is a completely different skill with many restrictions and destination located (where you stand) before use, after which it must be used before a minute is up. Its usefulness is highly situation where blink was always on my mesmers hotbar. Mist form is actually better.

Another thing to consider when thinking about mes vs. ele blink is that mesmers don’t really have any “charge up” abilities that can really benefit from blink like earthquake or churning earth. So for a mesmer, their blink is basically just used for manuevering…not really used to turn a PBAoE into a ranged ability like an ele can do.
So it’s not fair to call a mesmer’s blink “better.” Even if it looks better when taken on its own, the mesmer winds up having a lot less skill synergy with it.

I actually never heard of blink. I don’t play other classes. I still feel it needs tweaking. Porting across open spaces would be over-powered, I suppose. But direct portions of land and certain angles should be an option. The range is an issue above all else.
Edit: I don’t feel it needs to do damage.
