New To Game, This class good for pvp/wvw?
necro and mesmer have an easier time in PvP. Necro being a little higher.
Ele has a lot of problems and right now are not part of the general PvP meta. Usually a team with an ele is extremely beneficial for the opposite team.
WvW the ele is mainly a backline class with the staff AOE.
In any case, the ele is the weakest class with respect to nearly all forms of PvP (general wvW except for zerging and spvp). right now the ele requires too much effort 3 to 4 more effort for average performance in PvP.
The great thing about gw2 is you can make a class try it out in spvp see if you like it. Which you should do.
Finally, gw 2 mage classes do not operate in the same manner as other games.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.

Go thief. Stay far far away from ele if you want to be good in PvP.
I am gonna disagree with Eviscera. Yes, ele has some trouble in the current meta. However, these problems really only show up when you get to the upper levels of pvp. With a little bit of skill you can do just fine in the lower-mid levels with ele.
Most importantly, this is a game, so play whatever you have most fun playing.
And, yes, ele can be very good in wvw when played right. It can be tough to do solo-roaming on an ele, but it is excellent in small-group and large-group things in wvw.
The march patch will supposedly help eles in structured PvP (sPvP), but right now, they’re pretty lackluster.
Structured PvP is the arena-type PvP that is completely where all gear is free and stats are even. This is accessed by clicking the crossed swords icon at the top.
In WvW, eles do better since they bring a lot of AoE, which is useful for large zerg encounters.
WvW is the large, castle-invading type PvP where players use their PvE gear to fight. Lower level players are also instantly leveled up to 80.
About the Mesmer, if you plan on doing organized WvW you will be nothing more that a veil/portal bot with nulfields. They make excellent roamers however when you can play the build you want and not the build your group needs.

To cut it short:
You will get taunted if you try to play Ele in sPvP. If your team wins the players on your team will usually even mock the enemy team that they won despite having an ele on the team. Ele is not really in a good position in PvP right now and i can’t really think of a situation where i would prefer an ele over a necromancer for example.
Ele in WvW does fine in a support role. That means that you can deal some really impressive AoE damage from behind and support your team with combo fields. However guardians/warriors still form the majority of a dedicated WvW zerg (if used in a large ball this is called meleetrain).
However Ele is the highest damaging class in PvE. If you use a build that is designed for pure damage and use certain skills you can deal damage that other classes can only dream of. However, this is very hard to play and usually requires a good group and teamwork. The low sustain and error margin of these builds also makes them completely useless for PvP.
All in all, ele is the class that is the hardest to play, learn and master and not really rewarding when you master it (you are not better than other classes altough you need a lot more actions per minute).
How about thief’s? Are they good at PvP and do good damage? Which class should I go ? Are mesmer good in this pvp meta?
Best advice, roll them all, play them until you find what you are comfortable with. I have always played stealth/rouge-ish characters in mmo’s. I rolled a thief and leveled him to 80, full exotics included. I got very bored very fast. Not saying thief is a bad class, it just didn’t do it for me. I rolled an Ele and have never looked back. It might be “in a bad place” but it will “recover.”
It is more difficult to grasp and you do have to be good at “playing the piano” (lots of keystrokes) to play an Ele effectively. But, it is hands down the funnest and imho most rewarding class to play. T/sPvP, PvE, and WvWvW…fun. This is why when I finished my Incinerator it went directly to my Ele and not my thief.
Try all the classes that appeal to you and make your own decision. It’s fine to ask advice but too many people will hate on the disparities of the Ele before they will tell you that it is fun to play.
Play an Ele because you love the class/mechanics. Not because you want to be good in PvP or top the dps charts.

As far as organized WvW goes, out of these 3 classes Ele is generally the most useful one in a zerg. Not as a damage dealer (because most of the damage will come from the melee train anyway), but as a support. As an Ele you have two water fields, fire field on short cooldown, excellent AoE condition removal (when specced for), AoE stun, AoE snare, wall-off skill and an excellent survivability on top of that.
On the other hand playing support is not for everyone, so if you are looking for classical “nuker” mage this will definitely not be a good pick. I mean, theoretically you could spec for full zerk and deal pretty decent damage, but you would also die on pretty much every occasion.
So while I generally play as healer/support classes in most MMOs, support Ele was an easy pick for me and I’m having a great time in WvW with it. That does require a competent commander and most of the zerg on TeamSpeak, but that’s never a problem on SR.
I don’t play Necro or Mesmer on WvW but they do have their uses, though in a far more limited scope, eg. you generally want 2 Mesmers in your zerg to portal Golems back and forth etc. Minions and conditional damage is pretty much useless in a zerg so that kinda limits the potential of Necros.
I wouldn’tpick a class just best it is good in PvP or PvE or WvW. Class balance is forever changing, what is great now might not be in the future. Classes that are weak now will eventually get buffed. You pick it because you like the way it plays. I like in your face up close and personal type play you I rolled a Warrior and a Guardian. My next favorite is the Ele for the complexity it has. You can do some pretty amazing things with an Ele once you learn to master attunements and combo fields.

If you want to play a mage kind of class in pvp I suggest you roll a mesmer. It’s one of the strongest 1v1 classes and winning battles against other players in a straight duel is usually what keeps people playing the game when they’re new to it. When you hit 80, you will also be useful in dungeons with portal/timewarp.
I see no point in playing an elementalist in pvp as a new player since it takes 3 times more effort to be as succesful as other classes.

Careful, mesmer can be very good IF (and ONLY if) played properly. The difference between a good mesmer and a bad one is staggering. In addition to that you have lots of buggy AI clones that seem to get more buggy with every patch. Mesmers can be good in 1v1 but they do not shine in WvW. In WvW they have exactly 4 good spells: veil, portal, null field and time warp (to speed up rams/golems on the gate). In actual zerg fights they feel more useless than an ele.
Meta is probably going to change bigtime on march 4, so just pick a fun class. If you choose something because it’s OP, you’ll get nerfed and be sad.
I’m torn between an ele and an engi (returning to the game after quite a while). I liked playing my ele when gw2 originally came out, but I prefer to be somewhat less squishy. I would mostly play WvW with some friends (roaming around in a small group), maybe some pve from time to time.
Hey mate,
Elementalists are very, very weak in PvP right now, mostly because the “jack-of-all-trades” profession role doesn’t fit well in very small scale lineups where specialization and min-maxing works better than improvisation and mixing roles.
In WvW we’re good, but only in group/zerg circumstances. Roaming we get killed very easily, and it doesn’t help that most of the other good roaming classes counter Elementalists very hard in a fight.
