Ok ok, I give in...
I can no longer defend the Tempest after playing Revenant.
The Tempest really is kind of meh. For all the reasons you guys have stated. DPS build too squishy, Bunker build lacks stun breaks + stability + damage, etc.
In order to join the ranks of Reaper, Scrapper, Dragonhunter, and Chronomancer, (and maybe Druid and Berserker – can’t tell if they’re good right now), I must play Revenant.
I must embrace the deeps…
Stunbreaks available to Bunker Build:
Trait one.
Using an Overload.
Taking any Stun-break options we have in our Utilities.
I DO think that Rebound needs to become an instant cast Stunbreak though, that would go a long way toward making it more viable as an Elite.
I feel quite the opposite.
I tried Revenant, maxed it, geared it full ascended, tried it in all the HoT map.
I find that Revenant game-play is really kinda dual compare to Tempest/Ele.
The main problem is the lack of diversity, both in traits and skills.
For traits, the way it works currently is more like choose good ones from all the bads.
Ventari line is worthless if you don’t use Centaur. There’re ALOT of imcomplete/weak traits fill out spaces that you can probably only pick 1 among 3. Sometimes all 3 options are crap and do not suit certain builds. Also you can tell that the trait lines have little synergy among each other, unlike Ele. (Tempest / Air / Water/ Fire/ Earth all interact with each other, like auras boons, cantrips)
Skills are the same, everything is locked out. Weapon design looks interesting at first, but when you take a close look you’d find that it’s kinda dual too.
Sword is the best dps weapon, but all you do mostly is actually just spamming 1111 because that’s the max dps rotation. There’s little reason to use other skills aside from using 3 as a mean to evade attacks.
Staff is in a weird place. 2, 3 has little use, and mostly used as a weapon to cleanse and to break bar. That’s it.
Hammer is probably the most fun weapon of Revenant, with lots of utility value and utilize all 5 skills.
Seriously, play Revenant alittle longer and you’d know what I mean. Ele/Tempest is still a much more diverse/fun class in my opinion.
Last note, Ele “dps build” has ALWAYS BEEN squishy. Yet people still value them and take them into coordinate teams because the damage difference is really SIGNIFICANT.
Don’t know why you suddenly complained about something that’s been like that forever. Tempest is actually the more durable dps build of Ele. Also Tempest can trait into alittle more defensive to address the squishiness of old zerk Ele. Also you have option of Marauder now to increase your survival while not sacrificing too much damage. (Still higher than most classes)

What you have described as dull is what I enjoy the most!
- Lack of build and weapon diversity = minimal time wasted theorycrafting
- Spam 1 for DPS = brain cells freed for general awareness and chatting
What you said about the history of Elementalists is true – not much has changed, and we are in fact better than our overpowered past. But the other classes …they got a lot better.
Tempest just needs a bit of tweaking thats all, the traits look as if they have been put together haphazardly in my opinion.
Yep a bit trait tweaking and tempes is not only fun and will be competative.
While i am not the best player due to lack of practice (Only a few month WvW) i see when i stress good veterans seriously and even win sometimes.
And i often run havoc in a teamfight. It is a bruiser with well placed overloads that work well in small fights.
I did try my build in sPvP. My first eavening there. Regardless of loosing more due to not knowing what is best to do i could match me with good players. I did fight someone with a shield and imidiately kew he is a trained PvP ler. Lost the first fast but the following was great. It was a real showdown and i did hit him hard and defended well for a long time. Yes i lost due to him exactly watching what i do. He constantly used his shield to bunker and recover when i got him below 50% and i had to learn how to break this. I died when i swaped elements to fire for an asault when he comes out of his shield block. He attacked immidiatley droping the shield when i swaped out of earth :-). It was clear to me that i lost because he was the better player and i had a fully competative build. Nice that he bowed to me.
My suggestions:
Give tempestous aria 20% CD reduction on shouts
Make Rebound instant cast on 60s CD and a stunbreaker.
Make speedy conduit a 25% baseline speed.
Trigger latent stamina on auras.
Water overload needs some rework. Its a bit a hazzle. The 5s wait kills its most useful aplication. Heal on demand … The other way camping and then locking out of water is just bad. This is for dedicated healer´s and those don´t work well.
So water OL needs to be ready on swap or do something special like the suggestet invul. Maybe make the bubble like an arcane shield.
For WH i don´t know. While it has use in some support builds it´t not realy tempting. I thought multiple times if i can replace my focus with it, but WH lost.

I’ve been keeping track of the eles I see in PvP. 2 Eles in my last 10 matches… Because of the current disaster in class balance and how boring Tempest is (along with completely disappointing new weapon, elite skill and traits) people are really moving on to the new meta of the classes mentioned in the first post.
Tempest really is pretty bad. I get that the mechanic is fun for some, but in terms of real efficacy, it just doesn’t measure up.
The base Ele is still just as strong as ever, though. No need to storm out (pun intended) just because our Elite Spec is a trap.
How to Condi Reaper on a budget
Everything I say is only in reference to PvE and WvW.
Well, both bunker and dps elementalist is pretty bad, that much i will agree with. But playing a support Auramancer is very strong in both random pvp and tournament. You can go for both a little tankier, healier or dpsier twists as well and weps are either d/f or staff.
I personally like staff better, if it is better always though can be discussed and you can make up your own mind. Water and tempest are mandatory, and earth as a third is meta. You can be funky ang go for freshair with the dagger or arcane with staff.
This is my favourite : http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vFAQFAWn0XCNYidOA+XCcYilSAz9s2WnrEXgBQAoIFcCGBA-TJxHABf/AAA4CAI++DFVGAA
Start with earth and do your thing and overload for 30 sec aoe protection. then switch to fire and lay down a quickness meteorshower. Go from there as you see fit!
Try it before going rev... revs are one click wonders and not very fun for anyone.
peace!

Tempest doesn’t need your defense. (ahem.. a little joke there)
I like my tempest. It suits me. If that makes me meh, so be it. Have fun with your revenant.
Why is Tempest mechanic bad?
Overloading is basically asking people to boon strip and then burst you or they can just straight up burst you. Pair it up with having both the lowest base HP and Armor in the game, I don’t even know how they came up with the idea of asking you to face tank in the front lines. Being able to dodge roll while overloading is a big deserved buff.
Stab is a big problem as well as you only have 2 access to stab while overloading, Harmonious Conduit (1 stack) and Armor of Earth which is on a 75s base CD. You can’t even use Rock Solid actively as your overloads get canceled when you swap attunements.
In PVP, Tempests are mostly forced into Celestial, even support roles. Unlike Ele, they need a lot more Vit and Toughness because they can’t dodge while overloading. Healing scales bad like usual with Elemental Bastion so Cleric Amulet is a no-no. Cleric w/ Aura heal is around 1.4k while Celestial heal is around 1.1k. Is the extra 300 healing worth losing 5.5k HP? Especially now that you’ll need to face tank a few shots to finish your overloads, every bit of HP is worth it.
Why is it fun?
Well for me, the visuals are awesome especially the War Horn ones excluding Heat Sync.
Support, mainly condi cleanse ability, is ramped up a lot. With soldier runes, Invigorating Torrents, Cleansing Water and Shouts/Auras, Tempests pretty much become cleanse bots. You still lack personal and stab sharing though.
AoE healing has been ramped up a lot too. Wash Away the Pain works wonders when used properly added to your passive Aura traits and active Aura skills.
