For a majority of my ele career, I’ve done nothing but WvW as staff/support and frankly, it’s gotten a little boring (also worth noting that my ele is really my only character). I did some reading and now I have a D/S build that I really like, but I have no idea how you stay alive in larger fights, such as world bosses. I showed up to Jormag and FE with my D/S build and I simply get shredded and die almost instantly. So, without typing out too much, how do you stay alive with a closer proximity build, or should you just stand back and do staff DPS/support?

If you die at Jormag then you are not ready for PvE

In case it wasn’t clear that I am a pretty casual player, I am. For someone who wrote such a lengthy guide, your answer is pretty useless and dismissive.

If you die at jormag you’re probably doing it wrong.

Jormag, and most world bosses, are very punishing at melee. At jormag you’re much better off with staff or the charrzooka they supply.

My guild runs the boss train regularly. Look me up and I’ll show you how to handle the world bosses.

Thanks for the input. I think for world bosses, I’ll stay ranged. As far as dungeons and “normal,” world PvE, I seem to be doing fine so I’ll just keep practicing the new build.

Somtimes I am bad

In all seriousness going range can be double edged as you will never learn how to deal with the challenges of being melee. This is detrimental since you need to be in melee to be most efficient.
Anyway, you should never use a scepter in PvE apart for might stacking before conjuring LH; although I would advise to use a D/F build instead.

The world bosses are frankly about learning “the stove is hot”. If you die a few times figuring out the mechanics yourself that is one thing. If you die constantly to them over an extended period then…I got bad news…

When Jormag’s ice shield is up, it puts a debuff on you that will stack and deal more damage, and can’t be cleansed with normal conditions. That doesn’t have anything to do with how you play or your build (unless you walk into it).

As an elementalist, it’s a movement based class, moreso than other classes. Also the scepter can be good in PvE if you use it right, you just have to be clever, it doesn’t have to do with build as much as learning to play with it.

I see dozens of people die/ get downed at jormag every single time I go there. Phase 2 especially. It has nothing to do with someone’s potential in pve as a whole.

Staff for max range with fiery greatsword melee range is ideal for Jormag.

S/d or s/f is really a nice change of pace for dungeons and champ farming.

D/d for best mobility, above average might-stacking, easy trash farming.

Staff you want at least 10 arcana, at least 10 water. Scepter you need 30 air for main dps which is your air 1 after the might stacking. S/D is slightly easier might stacking and more mobility via ride the lightning. S/F provides more defense, but can kill slower if you’re not spec’d full glass. I have to add that the new 6/6 strength runes will let you spec more defensively and still pump out the damage given that each piece of your gear has ferocity on it.

S/D is probably my favorite champ farming set due to it’s ease of use and transitioning. Can easily swap to d/d to run around between fights in open-world. Fiery greatsword is always going to be your elite because it’s either an extra-escape, travel-time reducer, and/or big deep crits from spamming 1, or channeling mobs against a wall/ in a line.

As for defense, you want to always have a cleanse available. I prefer to use cleansing fire with signet of restoration for my heal. You simply spam dps in air to heal back up. And use your blinds in air and earth to duck telegraphed incoming hits. Focus is nice for a 2nd cleanse that removes the need to go 20 water, 30 arcana, or ether renewal. It is really fun to use in pvp. It does so many things. I use signet of air (speed, blind, stun breaker) for mobility, or traveler runes. I always run lightning flash, so I swap signet of air for armor of earth before combat starts.

For huge fights like WvW or Living Story stuff, I would stick with staff or dd for the healing potential and ability to tag more things.

I just use staff, my non-zerker set (which is currently all clerics because I haven’t bothered to edit it) and run 6/0/0/2/6 for my champ farming and world boss running. I like staff because I can be out of range of a lot of the attacks or right at the edge of the range of them, makes it easier to survive when there’s a lot of people on screen lagging everything.
