PvE leveling build?
ele is a steep learning curve at first. What makes an ele great once you get to the top is attunement swapping regularly to perma lots of boons during fights… but before you get those trait points to spend, it can be quite frustrating.
I recommend she consider scepter/dagger to start, that way she can have some ranged safety but still lay down some good damage. As she can start spending more and more trait points, she’ll probably switch to dagger/dagger. I was an early-on ele, from day 1 of release, so for those of us finding our way in a new game, the learning curve was rough. I spent my first 10 levels in scepter/focus and then staff for a while… my how much I’ve learned since then. I have about 600 hours logged on ele.
Staff actually isn’t a terrible wep set early on, especially if you have someone else with you. D/D works fine, I used from probably lvl 40 and up, but it really doesn’t shine until you get those trait points and learn what ele is all about, blast finishers and stacking boons on yourself and your team.
Also, if you’re a good boyfriend you’ll be running with her helping her level, and maybe taking some of that melee off of her
I also have been playing ele since the beginning. Def a learning curve. And it isn’t for everyone. S/D is my preferred weapon combo, and I still have it at level 80. Haven’t really played any of the others.
I JUST found this link and went and watched the video and read through it and I think it would be useful to a beginning ele. http://www.thehealthygamer.com/2012/09/06/guild-wars-2-elementalist-scepter-dagger-leveling-build/
I had a ton of trouble at first, and what I did was research online and watch some videos to get the technique of switching attunements and kiting. She will need to learn to kite, for sure. I have specced more of a “glass cannon” build, but am still having issues with dying, so I’m going to respec for some more toughness. I do think there needs to be a little more of a balance. But I would focus more on power than toughness. We are deadly!!
I love my ele. Like I said, watch some videos, read some tips, and really just play it and find out what works for you (or her, rather). It does get easier when you get your traits and open up all your slots. Don’t give up too early, but if she keeps with it awhile and finds out that she still doesn’t like it, then it may not be for her.
Good luck!
