I have 2 different main daggers: Sigil of the night (ascalonian wep) and 5% damage.
Off hand: sigil of battle always.
Staff: sigil of fire.
Armor: full berserker. If I had to choose a “tanky” spec though, at most I would get cavalier’s and maybe 1 or 2 soldiers (azurite trinket), but that will never happen.
I also have a scepter (bloodlust sigil), an extra staff (magic find sigil), another scepter (magic find again) and another trident (magic find, main one has sigil of battle again).
utilities: Used to be arcane shield / wave + mist form. But now I use lightning flash, armor of earth and arcane wave.
traits: 0/20/0/20/30 24/7.
I doubt that any of this will suit your playstyle for now… maybe in the future. Playing berserker is the way to go for high end pve, and it’s a ton of fun in pvp.

Down with the braindead faceroll classes.
Full Berserkers should be your goal for PvE in the end. In fact, if you only plan to PvE, go double daggers with full Berserker gear (and staff/scepter/focus in bag) and don’t look back.
If you plan to do WvW, it’s still a bit complicated. If you only run with zergs, full Berserker Staff Ele is very strong. If you plan to roam, go for something tankier (Knights on your armor and something with vitality on your trinkets is a good way to go).
Either way, 0/10/0/30/30 and its variations (such as 0/20/0/20/30) are indeed the best trait arrays. Stay away from fire, put 15 in Water, max Arcana for acceptable trait builds.

if you’re going support go for Clerics/Knights sprinkled with soldiers and rampager gear.
Boonduration runes:
2 superior water
2 superior monk (AC dungeon)
2 Major sanctuary (HotW dungeon) *must be major, the superior gives chilled duration not boon duration.
use either a sigil of energy or a sigil of battle with any non-CD sigil on the other weapon.
Yeah I have full beserker gear at the moment for PVE but when it comes to WvW and dungeons I want to be a little bit tougher.
So is the boon duration runes the way to go? Can I use 2 superior water and 2 major runes instead of the major sanctuary as the former gives 15% and the latter 10% or can you not use the same type of rune?
I’m thinking of going full knights armour with a mixture of knights and Valkyrie trinklets. No idea about a back item though, I hear that the best you can acquire is from being in a guild?

You should still go full Berserker gear for dungeons, I feel. The Ele has enough in-built survivability with 15 in Water and 30 in Arcana that attuning to Water is a nice, consistent heal.

As for WvW, your choice of Knights + Valkyrie is solid.

If you’re going into WvW, you need to be a LOT tougher. and a good dose of Healing power doesn’t go amiss. People wearing Berserker gear melt like snowflakes.
I started out with knight’s armour and water runes, Cleric’s weaponry with Bloodlust and Battle sigils.
I’ve modified that since as I got more confident, swapping out some of the HP for more pure P. Similarly, I used Shaman (exotic) trinkets at first but replaced them with Valk. ascended versions.
The Cavalier spineguard is easily obtainable and is a good starting option (I’m still using it)
Your choice of skills, particularly healing and your chosen food are also important (even critical) factors. I use Signet of Restoration in passive mode because I have enough healing that I NEVER have to actually proc it, (One less button to press)
